Edwards Camp Takes Issue with Obama for Not Forcing 'Showdown' with Bush on Iraq
April 02, 2007 6:45 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: The Edwards camp is taking issue with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for telling the Associated Press that if President Bush vetoes the war funding bill because of its timetable for troop withdrawal from Iraq, the Congress will provide the president with another version that lacks such a provision. According to the AP, Obama explained this by saying that no lawmaker "wants to play chicken with our troops."
"Sen. Edwards has a different view," Edwards spokesperson Kate Bedingfield tells ABC News. "Voting for this funding without the withdrawal timeline is giving the President a blank check to continue with a failed strategy. Edwards believes that Congress should force a showdown and override a Bush veto, instead of simply allowing the White House to push onward unchecked with a strategy that isn't working."
Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., told ABC News' Robin Roberts last week that if she were president she would sign the Senate war-funding measure which includes the goal of completing redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq by March 31, 2008. She has not indicated, however, what she would support doing if President Bush makes good on his promise to veto a war funding bill with a troop withdrawal provision.
When asked Monday by ABC News' Eloise Harper for her opinion on Obama's comments to the AP, Clinton did not directly address her rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, preferring instead simply to urge the president not to veto the bill.
Clinton made her Monday comments in Elizabeth, NJ after picking up an endorsement from Gov. Jon Corzine, D-N.J.

In my opinion, Senator Edwards' position is exactly what General Petraeus needs to put pressure on the Iraqi leadership and force them to move forward with reconciliation. No amount of military force can end this. No Americans, coalition forces, or "foreign fighters" can end this. The only way to get our troops out of harms way is to make the Iraqi government take control and make the necessary decisions.

I am glad John Edwards stood up to Obama. This shows that Obama should not be running for President. Obama has lost my vote, and John Edwards has gained it.

Obama just lost my vote. I am voting for Edwards now. This is not a time to give in to George W Bush.

The country is awakening to the fact that John Edwards is the finest person to run for President in decades. I met him and talked with him and have a good sense of the man. He should be President.
Sincerely,
an M.D. from Texas

John Edwards is simply the best candidate for the presidency. I've met all of the current candidates in various fora in the past year and it's plain that Edwards stands heads and shoulders above them all as measured by force of mind, strength of character, depth of compassion for American's left behind by economic and social dislocation, and will fight for his beliefs when President.
