Elizabeth Edwards' Good News

ABC's Jake Whitman Reports:  Elizabeth Edwards says she has received some good news:  She has a type of cancer that is more likely to be controlled by anti-estrogen drugs.

Mrs. Edwards spoke to the Associated Press last night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa while campaigning with her husband.

Mrs. Edwards also expressed frustration to the AP over reports that she's likely to die within five years.

She said doctors can't give her a reliable life expectancy and even if they could, the information would be of no comfort to her.

"I don't care," she told the AP, "I'm going to fight exactly as hard if they tell me that I've got 15 years or if I've got 30 years. I'm still going to fight to get rid of this - if they tell me I've got 15 minutes I'm still going to fight. It doesn't matter what the prognosis is. So it's not an important piece of information to me."

Are we going to be receiving a daily "update" on Elizabeth Edwards' cancer for the next year and a half?

This is really starting to look as though the Edwardses are exploiting her illness to gain in the polls.

This past weekend, for the first time in two weeks, Elizabeth was home with her children and she invited two (possibly three) television networks into her home to interview her.

I wish Elizabeth well, just as I wish everyone with cancer well, but this is starting to disgust me.

This is excellent news. John Edwards has my support.

To those saying that they are tired of hearing about Elizabeth's cancer - tell the news media to focus on John Edwards' policy instead of her health. John Edwards has specific plans and I will vote for him at the caucus in Iowa.

Sean and Emma--

Don't read the articles or watch the interviews then.

I'm not sure what "disgusts" you so much about this recent good news, but if you really wish her well leave it at that and go vote for someone else.

Her husband is running for President. She is in the public eye. People like me care about her. Get over yourselves.

If Sen. Edwards wants to run for President, that's fine and that's his choice. To exploit his wife's illness to gain attention is ok too but it's a pretty cold hearted way to gain the spotlight. I'm not sure I'd want him in the presidency. I'd rather hear how he plans to deal with issues of importance to the United States. I would expect any loving husband to be supportive and encouraging to his wife, no matter who he is, President of the United States or my gardener.

As one who had cancer, the LAST thing anyone should do is go home and die. It's time to live. The only people making this an issue is the media and people who don't like brave women. She sets an absolutely wonderful example. Frankly, I don't see how it is anyone's business how she chooses to live. Is it my business how you live, 7:41:36?

To Sean & Emma Wilson:

News flash! You might be tired of this type of news. How are you about your support for Bush and his administration on the Iraq war and WMD. If you are American and lived here all your life, I would think that you could adjust to the same scrutiny everyone else does in the private and public sector. By the way, this is refreshing considering people have been hiding in their storm cellars or shelters with all the propaganda and what if scenerios from this administration. I am glad people at least use the Internet without fear.

I have to disagree with the Wilsons' cynical comment. I doubt very much the Edwards will be providing "daily updates" on Elizabeth's cancer. But this story gives significant new information about the seriousness of what she and her husband will be dealing with.

I also doubt that news outlets were invited to their home, as opposed to Elizabeth responding to many requests for interviews. It appears she also wants to counter stories (which her children are old enough to hear) that she's likely to die in five years.

I too have just had a recurrance of breast cancer that is metastatic. I applaud Elizabeth Edwards for her courage to continue to fight this disease and to stand side by side with her husband for the presidential nomination. She is a gleaming example of how to fight for ourselves and our families. She would be a wonderful first lady and advocate to all women.
