Evaluating 100 Days of Democratic Rule
April 12, 2007 4:55 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: Friday, April 13th marks 100 days from Janary 4th, 2007. So as of tomorrow we'll have had 100 days of Democratic rule in both the House and the Senate.
But none of the major agenda items Democrats ran on have been signed into law -- much less sent to the President's desk for a veto.
Democrats spent today touting their accomplishments. They've passed a minimum wage hike, new lobbying rules, passed a bill to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations, a budget, a funding bill for the troops and a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq and tried to roll back the ban on federal funds going to research on newly developed stem cell lines.
"In the Senate's first 100 days at work, we have passed legislation that cleans up Washington, gives working Americans a raise, cuts taxes for working families, restores fiscal responsibility and allows federal funding for stem cell research," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today on the Senate floor.
"Democrats have also made the homeland more secure and continue to hold this Administration responsible for its failed policies in Iraq."
The President has said he'll veto a number of these bills. But he hasn't gotten the chance.
Because while Reid will tell you the Senate has been in 54 days (to the 41 at this point last year) and had 128 votes (to the 90 last year), Republicans point out, while all these bills have passed, in various forms in the two houses of Congress, they haven't really gotten much done.
Not much of anything. The only big bill Democrats have passed is an enormous money bill to fund the federal government for one year. And to do this, they sidestepped the normal committee and amendment process.
The others, while passed by one or both houses, are languishing in conference (the Iraq supplemental, minimum wage) or awaiting a vote by the other side (lobbying reform among others).
Republicans put out a press release with a lilst of all the bills that have been enacted into law this year, 10 of which named post offices and court houses.

Gee, thanks for your pro-Republican "analysis." You make Republican rubber-stamping and Bush do-nothingism look like positive policies.

If Democrats had any cooperation from across the aisle, these initiatives would be law. However, the GOP is still so insensed over their upset at the ballot box in Nov. 06, that not for love nor money will they cooperate -- even on bills that make sense. The GOP's view of progress is tax cuts for the wealthy.

This is an easy one.
100 Day Assesment - Nothing was done. Lots of boasting, general talking, and infighting.

Because it is stating the TRUTH does not mean it is "pro-Republican analysis". Please find one shred of evidence that states the contrary of what this article is talking about! Aside from getting political revenge and persecuting a rival political party, what have the Democrats done?

In simple terms the Democrats have had little or no impact. In the next 100 days they will try again and again to tie funding to withdrawal of troops in Iraq. And they will fail.

Most of them should be charged with criminal assistance of Al Queda. Madame speaker has proven she has to be one of the shortest memory people in DC. and the dumest.

Democrats have done more in 100 days, than the Bush Administration has done in these past 6 years.
Reality might hurt you, but the truth is Dems have a plan for our country.
The Republicans have been given there chance since 2001 to get it right for the American people. THEY HAVE FAILED IN EVERY WAY!!
2008 is a statement saying sorry for the 2004 election. VOTE DEMOCRAT!

Does the first 100 Days count the actual business days when Congress is in session towards? From the opening, it sounds as though that is not taken into account. I thought that was the issue with the first "100 hours" legislation (actual vs. business).

What do you expect? The democratic majorities are thin and the Republicans retain the White House...did you really think they would make it easy for the Democrats to accomnplish anything? With a Presidential election coming up, the Republicans are doing everything they can to keep the Democrats from accomplishing anything - the welfare of the country be damned!

We need more insightful analysis such as that presented in this article.

The spending bill was left over from the GOP congress and had to be dealt with by this congress by the 110th.
Wish the senate would move faster but it's the nature/design for it to move slowly.

And if Republicans had had any cooperation from the Democrats when they were the majority many of their initiatives would have become law! Lest we forget the Democrats believe that they've accomplished something when they just talk about it...they don't actually have to do anything. Besides they are too busy issuing subpoenas against the White House to do the real work they were supposedly voting in to do!

I think the Republican Congress of a few years ago would say the same thing. The Democrats took the opposite side on EVERY issue just to be problematic!

Are you kidding me?! The Republicans had 6 years to work with and got nothing done but start a (failed)war and get businesses rich. They have failed to display the leadership this country needs for the 21st century. Wars can't even be fought like the past because everyone will has(or will soon have)nukes and war will mean everyone dies!

I personally love this country and everything it stands for. Unfortunately there are too many of you sixties retreads with your grey pony-tails. You have been trying to destroy this country since Vietnam. Notice on the Mall that there were more supporters of Bush than so called war protesters. Please! Quit hating America.

the previous poster is insane. the abc article is also not very good journalism. i dont care if it is for or against the dems 100 day record. it is simplistic and poor journalism, on par with all the other garbage journalism sources we have now.

"Sixties retreads"have Not destroyed the country. FYI, if you pay attention to current events, the current administration and the GOP have been diligently working like termites to erode the Constitution to permit intrusions of habeas corpus, speech, functions of the presidency and the right to assembly. I can't think of any prior administration that has done more damage.
