ABC News' Matthew Zavala Reports: Former governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., said in an interview with the Associated Press that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is "clearly creating a major distraction for the president and for the administration and for the Republican Party."

Huckabee also seemed to place the responsibility on Gonzales to resign, rather than force the president to release him. There have numerous calls for Gonzales' resignation, but President Bush has been loyal to Gonzales giving him a vote of confidence as recently as Monday.

"Sometimes the best position would be for the appointee to make the decision and not force the president to do so. You best serve the person you work for when you can decide that if you are a distraction that you no longer will create that level of problem for your boss," said Huckabee.

Huckabee, who served as governor of Arkansas for two terms, said that at some point, a chief executive needs to examine what's best for his overall mission. "You need to start asking is this becoming a large distraction that's keeping us from doing the important things that we need to be getting done," said Huckabee.

Huckabee also said, that although Republicans agree that Gonzales is a distraction, the president has not noticed, "for reasons I don't fully understand" said Huckabee.

Do you expect someone that doesn't know the difference between their right and left hand to be able to appreciate the impact a more complex issue like the Alberto Gonzales has on his administration's credibility. Not me! I don't think the right hand (or is it the left?) knows what the other is doing!
