Grassley Stays Out of the Mud

ABC News' Matthew Zavala Reports: Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told Radio Iowa that he will not endorse a candidate until the fall or may stay neutral altogether.

"I may decide to stay out so I can be unifier -- after the fact -- for our party," Grassley told Radio Iowa's O. Kay Henderson.

The senior senator endorsed Sen. Bob Dole's, D-Kans., bid for the Oval Office in 1996 and did extensive campaigning on his behalf throughout the Hawkeye State.

The lawmaker was careful not to reveal who he may be leaning towards, but did offer comments on the frontrunners.

Of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Grassley offers, "The attitude towards the war among the public, generally, may be affecting him.  He's taken a very strong position in support of the president and I think the outcome of this latest effort in Iraq is going to have a real impact on whether John McCain will be an outstanding candidate or not."

Regarding former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., Grassley thinks if President John F. Kennedy could get elected being Catholic then then it's not "going to be a problem for Mitt Romney, being a Mormon."

Grassley also said former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who made his first trip to Iowa as a presidential candidate this week, might not be troubled by his moderate abortion stance, insisting most Republicans will overlook their policy differences with 'America's Mayor' because they "are interested in keeping the presidency."
