ABC News' Jennifer Duck Reports: Presidential hopeful Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) announced his plan to impeach Vice President Cheney late tonight, after originally postponing his announcement because of the Vice President's health scare this morning.

On a terrace overlooking the Capitol, Kucinich staffers wheeled boxes of oversized binders full of impeachment materials toward encircled reporters.

Kucinich believes the Vice President falsely led the American people into war with Iraq, and said Cheney will do the same with regard to Iran. "It became obvious to me that this Vice President, who was a driving force for taking the United States into a war against Iraq under false pretenses, is once again rattling the sabers of war against Iran with the same intent to drive America into another war, again based on false pretenses," Kucinich said.

When asked why he isn't impeaching President Bush for leading us into the war, Kucinich responded with practicality, "I think that it's very important that we start with Mr. Cheney. Because if we were to start with the President and pursue articles of impeachment, Mr. Cheney would then become President."

Kucinich said bringing charges to both Cheney and Bush would cause Congress to "go through the constitutional agony of impeaching two presidents consecutively."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has previously stated that impeachment is "off the table." However, Kucinich said Cheney violated Articles I-III of the Constitution and it's his right as a member of Congress to bring impeachment against the Vice President--even if it's against Speaker Pelosi's will.

Kucinich said he has not asked for responses from other members of Congress, but he plans to talk with Sen Conyers and other Judiciary Committee members soon.

Regardless of Congress's reaction to impeachment charges, Kucinich says he does not stand alone because millions of Americans share his concern: "I take this action beyond partisanship, beyond party, as an obligation and commitment to my nation and my loyalty to America and my willingness to say, 'Stop the lies. Stop the lying. Stop the dying that's occurring in Iraq over lies.'"

I think it's about time at least ONE of the current White House staff was held accountable for illegal activities since they took office. I say GO DENNIS! And I hope to God that Congress gets some guts and stands up to this administration. Bush/Cheney/et.al. are NOT above the law.

i agree the president & vice president should be impeached for numerous reasons. Lying to the nation, political cover-ups, Halliberton, Enron...the list goes on. Most importantly, i feel that allowing these two men to have command of our nation poses a greater risk than any terrorist attack on our country....in my honest opinion, Mr. Bush & Mr. Cheney are the worlds largest dicators & terrorist. They forced a nation to go to War on false pretences;they've been linked to numerous white house scadels; the refuse to work with the newly "people elect" congress; and they continue to use arrigant language about their failed policies in Afghan & Iraq, in hopes to persuade the nation to be duped again!

Thank you Mr. Kucinich for having the courage to start this overdue process. Cheney is an appropriate start for holding the PNAC array of war criminals to account.

It takes a lot of courage and integrety to put foward this resolution at this time. When we look back in the furure Rep Kucinich will be regarded as a real leader of our times. He has more heart, guts and backbone than any politician I have ever known.

Impeach Gonzales, Cheney AND Bush. They belong to the most corrupt administration in American history. It is important to impeach them NOW so as to show the world that we will not put up with this, that we are a country governed by laws and not by the whims of men. These men have degraded us, they need to be held accountable for their numerous, incredible, yet verifiable crimes.

THE BEST THING BUSH & CHENEY COULD DO FOR THEMSELVES AND FOR THE WORLD WOULD BE TO IMMEDIATELY RESIGN FROM OFFICE AND VOLUNTARILY COMMIT INTO PSYCHIATRIC TREATMENT. IF THEY DO THIS THEY MAY LIKELY BE SAVED FROM ARREST, TRIAL AND EXECUTION UNDER INTERNATIONAL WAR CRIMES LAWS. FOR THEY WOULD LIKELY BE PLACED IN CONFINEMENT FOR THE REST OF THEIR NATURAL LIVES ON AN INSANITY PLEA. . . . Since the Congress refuses to impeach Bush and Cheney because of their own guilt as accessories before and after the fact to the crimes committed, We need to seek involuntary commitment of Bush and Cheney as they both pose a real and demonstrated continuing threat to the world! . . . Sample forms for petitions for involuntary commitment of Bush and Cheney are linked to this site so that We the People can take action to seek a removal from office of Bush and Cheney on grounds of mental incapacity. With sufficient financial support to sustain legal proceedings in a court of competent jurisdiction, a class action petition will be filed seeking involuntary commitment of Bush and Cheney.
