Obama Gaffe on War Funding?

ABC News' Jonathan Greenberger Reports: In what may be a blow to his support among the anti-war left, the Associated Press is reporting that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., says that if President Bush vetoes the war funding bill because of its timetable for troop withdrawal from Iraq, the Congress will then swiftly provide the president with another version that lacks such a provision. According to the AP, Obama explained this by saying that no lawmaker “wants to play chicken with our troops.”

President Bush has previously vowed to veto any Iraq supplemental bill that contains a withdrawal timeline.

Obama’s comments to the AP place him alone among the major Democratic candidates for president. So far, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and others have focused on simply calling on Bush not to veto the supplemental, and unlike Obama, have not stated that the Congress would respond to a veto by sending the president a "clean?" funding bill.

Already, Obama is taking heat for his remarks from some of the anti-war left, which is a key constituency for his campaign. Influential liberal blogger Markos Moulitsas wrote on Daily Kos that he wishes Obama's comments were an April Fool's Joke. "What a ridiculous thing to say. Not only is it bad policy, not only is it bad politics, it's also a terrible negotiating approach," wrote Moulitsas. "Obama just surrendered to Bush."

Obama's campaign did not return a request for comment.

I am a liberal- but I remember Vietnam only too well = this war is wrong but by playing funding games are we not already playing a deadly game of chicken after all as a soldier you want to know if you should dig youself a latriene or a grave and I don't believe you should have to wait on Politicians to tell you which one is safer - after all you can only do a pee dance for so long.......

The "make a statement" guys make not like it, but to me this demonstrates that Obama is willing to think for himself and consider the consequences of his actions rather than just the perception.

Currently, the Dems don't have the votes to override a veto by Mr Bush. Perhaps Mr Obama shouldn't state the obvious, but his fault in doing so seems pretty minor.

Remember, there as a real date specific for beginning to withdraw from Iraq. That is the next national election. Unless there is a large turn-around in our military fortunes, the Dems will win in a landslide.

Politically, the correct strategy seems to be to keep up pressure on the President and let the GOP twist in the wind. The GOP is going to have to clean up their own mess to get any kind of parity in the next election cycle. My bet is that they will do nothing and take the hit.

When we observe protesters burning our flag and burning our soldiers in effigy along with shouts of "Away with God" - it is time for our political leadership of America to unite as one voice and go out and finish the work of liberating the people of Iraq - followed by the deporting of anyone daring to destroy our military image and demean the God of all creation. There is more than a grave waiting for those who are fools in God's sight.

Damn! Then what is the point in having all this debate and tug-of-war;was it all a farce? sounds like the ultimate cop out, if he is going to throw in the towel.
I am thoroughly disappointed in Obama.

Obama is just stating the facts and he happens to be right. Everyone that knows one thing about the process on the Hill knows that unless the supplemental had at least 60 votes in the Senate on original passage, that a Presidential veto could not be overridden. It is the Republicans who have "thrown in the towel" since only two or three of them voted for the supplemental but would NEVER vote to override a Bush veto.

Frank, to answer your question, YES, it was all a farce. Just like Clinton voting for war with the "expectation" of diplomacy first. I'm finding it difficult to understand the criticism against Senator Obama. Is he supposed to join the blissful insanity of most Democrats in pretending that Bush isn't going to veto that Bill or that the Dems have the 60+ votes to override his veto? He chose to state the truth--as unpopular as it is. It may be a bitter pill to swallow, but it's the truth. The public constantly complains that politicians don't square with them, but when the truth isn't appetizing, you demand a fresh serving of BS!
