ABC News' Matthew Zavala Reports: Def Jam Records CEO Russell Simmons said in an interview with New York Times Magazine that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is a 'mouse.'

Deborah Solomon asked the hip-hop mogul about Obama's call for rappers to reform their offensive lyrics in the wake of the Don Imus controversy and Simmons responded, "What we need to reform is the conditions that create these lyrics.  Obama needs to reform the conditions of poverty."

Simmons also took issue with Obama's corporate donors.  "I wish he really did raise his money independently," said Simmons, before adding, "So at the end of the day, he’s controlled, too. That’s my point.  He’s a mouse, too, like everybody else."

The Obama campaign raised $25 million in the first quarter, with roughly a quarter of that money coming via small dollar Internet donations.

The candidate that strikes Simmons' fancy is former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.

"I talk to John Edwards more that I talk to anyone," Simmons told the paper of record's weekend magazine.  "He has said more things about the conditions we need to think about.  He went to yoga with me.  He did the whole class, an hour and a half.  He sweated like crazy."

No word yet on whether yoga with a rap mogul enhances or subtracts from the well-coifed Edwards' common man campaign.

Be sure to check out Solomon's complete interview with Simmons in your upcoming edition of the New York Times Magazine.

Obama is a REAL MAN, Rappers are not. Obama do not degrade women, Rappers do, Obama respect his African American sisters; Rappers do not respect women. I would never buy there music; and do not allow my children to but it. Rappers do not have an agenda, Obama does. Obama could not care less what he is called, he knows what who is. I say to those rappers, CLEAN IT UP.

I agree that the situation needs to be policed up however that is not only the job of Obama. The people that live in these conditions have to want to be a part of the clean up. Obama didn't put these people in this situation. Obama didn't come from a family that had tons of money. Everything he's done has been by himself and the undying support of his mother. That's how people get out of the situation in the ghettos. I'm tired of my people waiting around for some politician to take them out of the ghettos. Get your own ass out of the ghetto and be a role model for you children. That's what it takes. I was raised in the ghetto in the earlier part of my life, but my parents did not allow that to be my life. It all starts at home if your kids see that your nothing then they'll be nothing.

I guess Mr. Simmons has to use the same negative smear against Obama as the artists he makes money off of use against woman and each other. Grow up Mr. Simmons and put yourself outside of the center of your universe for a little while and then look back in. You will see that you look and sound like a little brat.
