Pres. Clinton MIA at Debate

ABC News' Kate Snow and Sunlen Miller Report: After the applause died down at the end of the first presidential debate, Michelle Obama- stately in a black dress and pearls- walked on stage and gave her husband, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., a hug.  Elizabeth Edwards followed not far behind and embraced her husband, former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.

Senator Chris Dodd's, D-Conn., two small children ran on stage and other family members flowed in from all sides.  And then there was Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who received a kiss on the cheek from Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., but quietly left the stage, no spouse at her side.  As the families lingered, shook hands and made small talk, former President Bill Clinton was nowhere to be seen.  Perhaps she would've been uncomfortable in that mix with no one at her side.

President Clinton was not on hand for his wife's first foray on stage with the other contenders.  And while Clinton pollster, Mark Penn, suggested on television that Bill was still in Russia to attend services for Boris Yeltsin, he was actually in Brooklyn, New York on Thursday night.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, the former President spent Thursday night at a $4500 a head fundraiser for Senator Clinton's campaign at the 4-story brownstone home of actor Gabriel Byrne.  The crowd of 200 was mostly made up of Irish-Americans.  The event was expected to raise $200,000, according to the Telegraph.

Sen. Clinton may well be better served by having her celebrity spouse out of sight at such events (and raising her some cash in the process).  Bill Clinton has a way of stealing the spotlight and Clinton's campaign is aware of the delicate balance between showing off her supportive spouse and allowing that spouse to overshadow her.  One audience member from Columbia, SC said she would know immediately if Bill were in the room.  "We would all feel the electricity" she said.

What this is retarded Clinton wasn't there because he does not want to be the fist man of America.

Their relationship has not appeared to be close in many years. I think she should have left him a long time ago to keep up a strong image and avoid further embarrasment. She chose not to. I am sure they use each other for political purposes only. Why act like the happy couple now? I thought he was a good president and the Lewinsky investigation was a waste of our time and money. What happened in Bill and Hillary's personal life should have been between them, not with millions of people watching. That's how we operate though, we like the entertainment factor. I'm moving on and supporting Obama.

And what, may I ask, does this absurd article have to do with anything?

Hillary and Bill Clinton have a great marriage and he has stated many times that he will be behind the scenes raising money and support for his wife.

Besides, Elizabeth Edwards seems to be attached to John with velcro. Sometimes, I wonder who is really running for President in that family!
Can you imagine if Hillary brought her husband to every television interview and every debate and forum conference and then had Bill ONSTAGE to formally introduct her each time? People would think Hillary was nuts. But this is what Elizabeth Edwards does.

It is highly unprofessional and may be part of the reason John Edwards is often referred to as "unpresidential".

The Clintons are doing just fine. Stay out of their marriage. It's nobody's business anyway.
