Tommy Thompson Makes it Official
April 01, 2007 10:57 AM
ABC News' Lindsay Hamilton Reports: Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, R, told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that he is taking his '08 presidential campaign from exploratory to official. Despite barely registering in most polls, Thompson was optimistic about his quest and especially his chances in neighboring Iowa.
"I have been spending all my time in Iowa and some time in New Hampshire and South Carolina," Thompson said. "I really got an Iowa strategy, and I've been in Iowa every single week since the first week in December."
When asked how he would be different from President Bush, Thompson, who served in Bush's cabinet as Secretary of Health and Human Services, said he "would have a completely different Iraq strategy." He says his strategy would involve a vote by the al-Maliki government on whether the United States should remain in Iraq.
On the issue of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Thompson said he "would not have appointed Mr. Gonzales" in the first place and "he's made terrible mistakes."
