ABC News' Bret Hovell Reports: Two White House Secret Service agents are in the hospital Tuesday after the accidental discharge of a government-issued firearm.

Both secret service agents -- one with a bullet wound to his leg, the other with shrapnel wounds to his face -- were taken to George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  Neither of the injuries are considered life threatening.

At the time of the accident, President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush were in Blacksburg, Va., attending the Virginia Tech convocation ceremony.

The incident happened at 2:10pm in or around the Southwest gate of the White House, according to the Secret Service.

Unrelated, but happening at the same time, at 2:11pm Tuesday, Secret Service agents noticed a suspicious package outside the Northwest gate of the White House.

A bomb robot is investigating and the park to the north of the White House has been shut down and pedestrian traffic stopped.

Good grief,I thought the best of the
best were assigned to the White House. Pennsylvania Avenue appears to
be populated by dolts.

How many Cops were injured in traffic accidents today? Where is the reporting on those? I guess those accidents were not as SENSATIONAL as a 'GUN' accident.

Looks like any idiot can work for the Secret Service. There is some hope for New Jersey after all!

It was an accident, good god people. Your not perfect. Take a look at the DEA Agent who shot himself in the foot, everyone makes mistakes morons!

Exactly Jersey.....your not perfect....I mean you're not perfect ;)

Sorry, mistakes like this are inexcusable for someone in this profession. How on earth do you shoot yourself in the foot with a modern handgun that has multiple safeties? This is just carelessness and clumsiness.

In special-forces units in the military, an accidental discharge is the end of your career there. You're sent back to the regular units with the rest of the grunts because you've proven you can't be absolutely trusted with a weapon in close-quarters battle.

Lynn H:

You are just figuring out that the WH is populated by dolts? What about the Dolt-In-Chief and the Vice-Dolt? They've been there for 6 years!

I doubt those guys will be working at the White House much longer...maybe they'll send them to guard the Vice President on his next hunting trip!

PLEASE Just don't tell me they were cleaning the guns..........cuz that a lie...........no one gets shot cleaning his/her weapon.......

Why isn't the issue of gun control brought up in this case?

Posted by: Steven M | Apr 18, 2007 5:25:43 PM

Maybe the Secret Service should be given stun guns instead if they can't handle a real gun.

Do you know the whole story????? No, you don't. I work in that "area" and there is more to the story than that.... Sad, sad public..you will believe anything the media tells you..haha..SAD!!!

Posted by: Mike | Apr 18, 2007 7:42:38 PM

hmmmm, the media told us there was a gun accident at the Whitehouse. The sad thing is that repubs blame everything on the "media" for telling a story.
Should they not have reported this? Should they not have reported Abramoff and the repbs associated with that scandal? It's not the medias fault that repubs are corrupt. Quit blaming the messenger and accept some responsibility for a change.

"Do you know the whole story????? No, you don't. I work in that "area" and there is more to the story than that...."

Why don't you tell us the whole story then, since the SS and ABC news hasn't...

Well, you know, only the 'highly trained' should have access to guns.

Probably two agents were fighting in the White House. One beat the other guy and messed up his face hence "shrapnel wounds to his face". He in return probably pulled off his gun and shot the guy in the leg to stop him.

Okay, I CAN think of a scenario where there could be a legitimate accidental discharge. If an agent was bringing a jammed firearm to the gunsmith or weapons expert for the group, and the firearm discharged at some point during inspection, troubleshooting or repair, then that would be a legitimate accidental discharge.

It would also mean that the weapon had been fired or an attempt had been made to fire the weapon, on a range, and the jammed weapon should have continued to have been pointed downrange if at a range or gallery. Only if the weapon were being used in a live situation or a found weapon should the weapon have been in a position to discharge in a manner that caused injury.

The odds aren't very high that the last scenario was the real one, but I suppose it's possible. Anything else, and it's clear that there were one or more idiots involved.

A lot of people get shot cleaning their guns. They just do not follow simple proper safety procedures...mostly because they think they are "experts" Just like that DEA agent letting his sidearm discharge in a class full of kids.

No gun discharges on its own, no matter what dufus says it did. In the end, it always comes to light that he was screwing around with it.

For the record, they were not Agents. They were Uniformed Division Officers.
