Elizabeth Edwards to People: My Job is to Stay Alive
May 30, 2007 4:46 PM
ABC News' David Muir Reports: In a "People" magazine article hitting newsstands on Friday, Elizabeth Edwards talks about the letter she's been periodically adding to since watching "Terms of Endearment" in 1983.
In the movie, a dying mother leaves behind words of wisdom for her children. Mrs. Edwards recognizes her letter has taken on greater significance as she now lives with an incurable form a cancer.
"It's 'how you choose who you marry and what to expect from that, how you choose a church,'" Edwards tells People. "It's got all that butting-my-nose-into-their-lives-long-after-I'm-gone-stuff."
Edwards says the letter is addressed to her children, Cate, 25, Emma Claire, 9 and Jack, 7.
In March, Edwards told reporters she had learned her breast cancer had returned and is now incurable.
Since that announcement, Edwards tells the magazine she's had little time to add to her letter. Over the Memorial Day weekend, she attended eleven town hall meetings as she continues to campaign for her husband, former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C.
Edwards tells People she has felt no side effects from the chemotherapy she began two months ago. Mrs. Edwards takes one pill daily. Every four weeks she receives a bone-building drug by IV.
When asked about depression, Edwards told the magazine, "I would be lying to you if I didn't tell you that there were times I feel overwhelmed. I'm very hopeful, but I don't have any idea yet whether they're working."
Edwards also tells the magazine of her new efforts to organize toys she has saved through the years belonging to her children.
She has carefully packed Cate's collection of Pound Puppies and Rainbow Brite dolls, telling People, "I don't know how long I have, and I don't want to leave all these things a mess."

You really sensationalized this headline to make it sound as though she had gotten seriously worse. Shame on you.

Being a cancer survivor I know why she continues life as much as normal as she can--we are not dead yet so we don't act like it. I went to work almost everyday maybe just for four hours sometimes. But, I needed to be useful and hopefully to make an impression on some one's life who may be dealing with cancer. You go Mrs. Edwards!!

Elizabeth Edwards is amazing and elegant. The quality of Elizabeth and her husband is shown in the way they conduct themselves and in the way they are continuing to live life in spite of bad news. We all need to live in the today, to not become burdened by yesterday and anticipate, but not wait for tomorrow. None of us know what tomorrows we have left. My fiancee and I thought we had years to get our respective kids in college and into their lives, then we could have our life. We met in college, and reconnected 30 years later. We thought we had the rest of our lives, we only had a year. He was taken out by a stupid driver who did not look at the road and drove right up the back of his bicycle. We all need to live as Elizabeth is living. For today, and as if there were no tomorrow.

I am very impressed with Mrs. Edwards and support her 100%. I have been blessed with good health but lost a child at the age of 9 to cancer. I remember the day we had a very grown up discussion about her disease. We both knew how serious her illness was, but we also came to the realization that although serious neither of us really knew what the future held. Just as our lives had changed in an instant the day we got the diagnosis, it can suddenly change again. We decided to not focus on the illness, but to live each day like we wanted to. We would do what we had to do, but find time to enjoy our time together, and did we ever. I think Mrs Edwards is doing just what she wants to do. Good for her and her family. I wish her the best.

We should all remember, "Live is Terminal." Live life to the fullest everyday, as if it is your last. None of us are guaranteed another day.

I agree with vanative2. From the headline, I thought she was gonna die TOMORROW. Christ.

Mrs Edwards is a hero to me. Right now in my life I am struggling to keep my financial house in order. Job, marriage, money, retirement are all on my mind. But, I dont have cancer. My problems are simple to fix. Just work harder.
God bless.

I sent an email to her address a little while after Elizabeth had press interview telling her newly diagnosed cancer process of once-viewed-as-cured , but, that message was returned to me by my ISP providers with no apparent reason, maybe too much mails pouring to that email address.
Anyway, I know the movie 'Terms of Endearment' too. I just imagined 'Steel Magnolia.'

HI I'm very unhappy to here that Mrs.Edwards has cancer I just had a cancer tumor removed from my right lung and I'm one of the lucky ones the doctors tell me I'm cancer free it was a very tough 7 months. I hope that this will not stop anyone from supporting John Edwards for the democrat nomination. for president of the united states of America,

I'm a 2-time cancer survivor, but have lost a sister, an aunt and a godmother to various forms of the disease. My prayers are with Elizabeth and her family as always, as is my hope that all cancer survivors are just that - survivors - every day we wake up in the morning, go about our day, and tuck into bed at night. Some days are harder than others, true, but each day is a gift and spending it with those we love doing what we believe in is paramount in living our lives. As many have already done, I'd love to give Elizabeth a hug and say, "You go, girlfriend!" and cheer the entire family along in their efforts. Our hopes, our prayers, and our best wishes go with you all.

How dare you? We all have that one job...to stay alive. But we don't have doctor's...we don't have money to buy food for our children. My children have not seen a dentist for 10 years..their father was an army officer. I do not ever believe your wealth is not earned...but do not tell us you want to live...so do we. I don't want my children to face the fact that war is forever in their future...I don't want to wake up every morning and hear that our young people are dying in an illegal war. Your fight is far less grim than theirs. They did not do anything but believe the if they did the right thing for the country...they would be okay. You believed in God...they believed in the men and women that run this pathetic country. I was raised by democrats...lived as a married women as a republican...now I realize that you all just are doing the same as I, taking care of yourself, with better pay and benefits...the shame is on you.

Elizabeth Edwards will make a great First Lady. I am looking forward to it.

You and your campaign must enjoy simple people. The people I live and work with are not simple. You played the pity card just like the right wing. Again, shame on you and all that you claim to be holy. Sell it for a dime. We are the poor shmucks that keep looking for the quarter under the cup. The shill.

Elizabeth only god knows the final hour nothing is incurable. god has the cure for everyone and everything just trust in him. cancer is a disease of the blood when we hate and dislike that turns to be a disease in the blood that causes us to have these cancers. the best cure for it is for us to forgive the ones that have done us wrong. forgiveness is the best cure for all cancers. try it. love and may god grant you peace in your life.

It really does say something significant about John Edwards that he had the foresight and/or good fortune to marry a woman as fine and brave as Elizabeth. She may make humble remarks, but she is especially brave. And perhaps John Edwards is the bravest of the candidates we face. The Edwardses show a greater and more graceful depth of character than any other couple campaigning in this election.

What a pity. Why play the victimcard in the most despicable way? Many women face tougher problems, but without a 28,000 square miles mansion, no healthcare etc.. Anyone using this to simply garner sympathy for your husband to get elected is beyond the pale, but then again so is the $400 haircut, the $55,000 fee for speaking to a taxdollar funded college, or the half million dollar earning in hedgefunds to learn about 'poverty'. What a crock!

to correct an error on my previous post: not 28,000 square miles, but rather 28,000 square feet.
