Elizabeth Edwards to People: My Job is to Stay Alive
May 30, 2007 4:46 PM
ABC News' David Muir Reports: In a "People" magazine article hitting newsstands on Friday, Elizabeth Edwards talks about the letter she's been periodically adding to since watching "Terms of Endearment" in 1983.
In the movie, a dying mother leaves behind words of wisdom for her children. Mrs. Edwards recognizes her letter has taken on greater significance as she now lives with an incurable form a cancer.
"It's 'how you choose who you marry and what to expect from that, how you choose a church,'" Edwards tells People. "It's got all that butting-my-nose-into-their-lives-long-after-I'm-gone-stuff."
Edwards says the letter is addressed to her children, Cate, 25, Emma Claire, 9 and Jack, 7.
In March, Edwards told reporters she had learned her breast cancer had returned and is now incurable.
Since that announcement, Edwards tells the magazine she's had little time to add to her letter. Over the Memorial Day weekend, she attended eleven town hall meetings as she continues to campaign for her husband, former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C.
Edwards tells People she has felt no side effects from the chemotherapy she began two months ago. Mrs. Edwards takes one pill daily. Every four weeks she receives a bone-building drug by IV.
When asked about depression, Edwards told the magazine, "I would be lying to you if I didn't tell you that there were times I feel overwhelmed. I'm very hopeful, but I don't have any idea yet whether they're working."
Edwards also tells the magazine of her new efforts to organize toys she has saved through the years belonging to her children.
She has carefully packed Cate's collection of Pound Puppies and Rainbow Brite dolls, telling People, "I don't know how long I have, and I don't want to leave all these things a mess."

You really sensationalized this headline to make it sound as though she had gotten seriously worse. Shame on you.

Being a cancer survivor I know why she continues life as much as normal as she can--we are not dead yet so we don't act like it. I went to work almost everyday maybe just for four hours sometimes. But, I needed to be useful and hopefully to make an impression on some one's life who may be dealing with cancer. You go Mrs. Edwards!!

Elizabeth Edwards is amazing and elegant. The quality of Elizabeth and her husband is shown in the way they conduct themselves and in the way they are continuing to live life in spite of bad news. We all need to live in the today, to not become burdened by yesterday and anticipate, but not wait for tomorrow. None of us know what tomorrows we have left. My fiancee and I thought we had years to get our respective kids in college and into their lives, then we could have our life. We met in college, and reconnected 30 years later. We thought we had the rest of our lives, we only had a year. He was taken out by a stupid driver who did not look at the road and drove right up the back of his bicycle. We all need to live as Elizabeth is living. For today, and as if there were no tomorrow.

I am very impressed with Mrs. Edwards and support her 100%. I have been blessed with good health but lost a child at the age of 9 to cancer. I remember the day we had a very grown up discussion about her disease. We both knew how serious her illness was, but we also came to the realization that although serious neither of us really knew what the future held. Just as our lives had changed in an instant the day we got the diagnosis, it can suddenly change again. We decided to not focus on the illness, but to live each day like we wanted to. We would do what we had to do, but find time to enjoy our time together, and did we ever. I think Mrs Edwards is doing just what she wants to do. Good for her and her family. I wish her the best.

We should all remember, "Live is Terminal." Live life to the fullest everyday, as if it is your last. None of us are guaranteed another day.

I agree with vanative2. From the headline, I thought she was gonna die TOMORROW. Christ.

Mrs Edwards is a hero to me. Right now in my life I am struggling to keep my financial house in order. Job, marriage, money, retirement are all on my mind. But, I dont have cancer. My problems are simple to fix. Just work harder.
God bless.

I sent an email to her address a little while after Elizabeth had press interview telling her newly diagnosed cancer process of once-viewed-as-cured , but, that message was returned to me by my ISP providers with no apparent reason, maybe too much mails pouring to that email address.
Anyway, I know the movie 'Terms of Endearment' too. I just imagined 'Steel Magnolia.'

HI I'm very unhappy to here that Mrs.Edwards has cancer I just had a cancer tumor removed from my right lung and I'm one of the lucky ones the doctors tell me I'm cancer free it was a very tough 7 months. I hope that this will not stop anyone from supporting John Edwards for the democrat nomination. for president of the united states of America,

I'm a 2-time cancer survivor, but have lost a sister, an aunt and a godmother to various forms of the disease. My prayers are with Elizabeth and her family as always, as is my hope that all cancer survivors are just that - survivors - every day we wake up in the morning, go about our day, and tuck into bed at night. Some days are harder than others, true, but each day is a gift and spending it with those we love doing what we believe in is paramount in living our lives. As many have already done, I'd love to give Elizabeth a hug and say, "You go, girlfriend!" and cheer the entire family along in their efforts. Our hopes, our prayers, and our best wishes go with you all.

How dare you? We all have that one job...to stay alive. But we don't have doctor's...we don't have money to buy food for our children. My children have not seen a dentist for 10 years..their father was an army officer. I do not ever believe your wealth is not earned...but do not tell us you want to live...so do we. I don't want my children to face the fact that war is forever in their future...I don't want to wake up every morning and hear that our young people are dying in an illegal war. Your fight is far less grim than theirs. They did not do anything but believe the if they did the right thing for the country...they would be okay. You believed in God...they believed in the men and women that run this pathetic country. I was raised by democrats...lived as a married women as a republican...now I realize that you all just are doing the same as I, taking care of yourself, with better pay and benefits...the shame is on you.

Elizabeth Edwards will make a great First Lady. I am looking forward to it.

You and your campaign must enjoy simple people. The people I live and work with are not simple. You played the pity card just like the right wing. Again, shame on you and all that you claim to be holy. Sell it for a dime. We are the poor shmucks that keep looking for the quarter under the cup. The shill.

Elizabeth only god knows the final hour nothing is incurable. god has the cure for everyone and everything just trust in him. cancer is a disease of the blood when we hate and dislike that turns to be a disease in the blood that causes us to have these cancers. the best cure for it is for us to forgive the ones that have done us wrong. forgiveness is the best cure for all cancers. try it. love and may god grant you peace in your life.

It really does say something significant about John Edwards that he had the foresight and/or good fortune to marry a woman as fine and brave as Elizabeth. She may make humble remarks, but she is especially brave. And perhaps John Edwards is the bravest of the candidates we face. The Edwardses show a greater and more graceful depth of character than any other couple campaigning in this election.
Posted by: Lawrence | May 31, 2007 2:50:41 AM
What a pity. Why play the victimcard in the most despicable way? Many women face tougher problems, but without a 28,000 square miles mansion, no healthcare etc.. Anyone using this to simply garner sympathy for your husband to get elected is beyond the pale, but then again so is the $400 haircut, the $55,000 fee for speaking to a taxdollar funded college, or the half million dollar earning in hedgefunds to learn about 'poverty'. What a crock!
Posted by: cali_sun | May 31, 2007 6:47:36 AM
to correct an error on my previous post: not 28,000 square miles, but rather 28,000 square feet.

I cannot speak from personal experience but I think instead of visiting those 11 cities, I would be visiting with my children every free moment while still alive to TELL them all you want them to know. While a letter will be cherished WHEN you're gone, your time with them will be something they will never forget. Get your priorities straight. You don't know how long you have to live (none of us does) but enjoy your life while you have it. Your husband can be president another time!

Mrs. Edwards, you are a classy lady and a hero to your husband, children and the rest of us. I wish you nothing but a long and happy life. Scientists make amazing strides every day, so please, don't ever lose the hope!
Posted by: Terri | May 31, 2007 8:25:16 AM
cali_sun, money will not save her from death, or pain, or the exhaustion that comes with being sick.
She is a public figure and she is not using her illness as an excuse to go into hiding nor is she trying to garner sympathy. She is just doing interviews as any prospective first lady would be expected to do, and she is staying positive. That's really all she can do. In addition, you haven't even read half the interview. If she was saying "woe is me" you'd be blasting her for that too. Come off it.

Dorothy,
Unless we elect someone who has the priority of health care for all, as Edwards does, the divisions between those with means and those without will increase until we are simply a land of haves and have nots. Since Bush has taken office that division has widened remarkably and it isn't a coincidence. Support the party of the people, vote Democrat.
Posted by: bob crawford | May 31, 2007 8:43:06 AM
Bob Crawford - Democrat, the party of the people?!? The party to take *FROM* the people and *CONTROL* the people is more like it. Why are liberals so fearful of controlling their own destiny and why do they want others to take care of them? You want universal health care - move to Canada. Wait 8 months for an MRI.
Posted by: James | May 31, 2007 9:04:50 AM
Elizabeth Edwards is far from a hero. My heart aches for anyone in that situation, especially with young children. The problem I have with Miss Edwards is that she, nor her husband demonstrate any spirituality. Her husband is a shameless armchair socialist who made his millions and now wants the rest of us to conform to some egalitarian meager existence. He wants to ration healthcare for the rest of us peons, while he and his live like royalty.
Posted by: Robert Rutger | May 31, 2007 9:09:37 AM
Elizabeth should be spreading the Gospel (is she aware of it?). We all should. The people controlling the leaders of our country will never give us our desires. Their desire for one world government is the only focus, having been in the works for hundreds of years. You won't have to move to Canada, it is a matter of time until it moves here, along with Mexico. Look around, the writing is on the wall. Look deeper, it will scare you.

What an inspiring person Elizabeth Edwards is. She is handling her illness with dignity and grace. All best wishes to her and her family...
Posted by: dingsy | May 31, 2007 9:52:35 AM
Elizabeth Edwards is not running for President. It only appears that she is. This may have been the biggest mistake John Edwards made in his campaign thus far, and he has made many mistakes. I am not of the crowd who believes all that he has to do is "win Iowa". Beyond Iowa, he has nothing else going for him - absolutely nothing - so a victory in Iowa will never be enough to propel him much further.
And has anyone noticed how very little time the Edwards family spends in their monumental residential complex -- big, ugly monstrosity that it is.
Following Edwards and his tawdry campaign has given me incentive to support Hillary Clinton.

My grandmother of 95 years of age frequently experiences significant heart attacks. since she is 95 she doesnt go to the hospital for them anymore in fear they will just prode and poke. In fact she just had an episode last week coincidently on the day of my weekly visit. we usually play cards but knowing of her incident i said we didnt have to if she wasnt up for it. the words she spoke next we're inspiring to me. "ITS going to happen at some point but i'm not just going to sit here and wait for it." we played cards until 12 a.m.
Posted by: Chrissy | May 31, 2007 10:59:58 AM
You people who want the government to provide you with healthcare make me sick! Look at Katrina! Its not the government's responsibility. Look at Hugo Chavez in Venezuela for crying out loud . . .
BTW - Someday Cate, Emma Claire and Jack will resent the time their mother spent away from them. But I pray that God heals her.
Posted by: Susan | May 31, 2007 11:13:14 AM
Elizabeth Edwards is no hero. She is a mother who tragically at a relatively early age has being diagnosed with an incurable from of cancer. All the while, her husband shamelessly continues to pursue the presidency and promote his socialistic vision for America. They are typical armchair socialists; living in the lap of material luxury and pushing for a squalid egalitatarian existance for the rest of us poor souls. God will judge them both.
Posted by: Robert Rutger | May 31, 2007 11:43:18 AM
Chrissy, enjoy your 95 y/o grandmother. She is the one with class!
This Elizabeth Edwards is no better than you or me....she is just another woman having to deal with cancer, like a lot of us. Living the rich life helps her deal with the financial stress & strain a lot better than most women.
While dealing with my own type of cancer, I continue to live, work or play around my doc appts. However, the main focus of my life is directly paying attention to my family....husband, children, grandchildren & taking care of my registered dairy goat herd. All travel to goat shows stopped so I could be with my human kids. I'm still fighting my battle, so don't know the outcome yet. But I'm not waiting to know, I'm planning my time for the now with my family. Yes, I do have wonderful friends that miss me at the shows, but being goat people, they understand & support me!
As for all the comments about DemoRats and RepubliCant's....I'm GOING TO GET BETTER so I can show people that this country can quit leaning on the 2 party system and support the Constitution Party (www.ConstitutionParty.org) :D
I do wish this lady God's blessings in her health fight.

I cannot help but believe these news stories the Edwards bring forward are politically motivated. I just read parts of Shrums soon to be released book on how the Edwards backstabbed the Kerry's, it's over at Drudge if you want to read it.
Posted by: Ricky S | May 31, 2007 1:24:08 PM
She should get her priorities straight! She has children who need thier Mother. Her dh needs to take care of his wife. If it is meant for him to become president one day, then he must run when she is not so ill. It sounds like he doesn't care to much for his wife health, putting her on the campaign trail when she is so sick.
Posted by: Anne | May 31, 2007 2:15:38 PM
It so happens that Jack and Emma Claire are traveling on the road with their mother and father. The Edwards go no place without their youngest children.
Incidentally, they also have a tutor traveling with them and Elizabeth is helping with their home schooling.
Elizabeth is a tremendously strong-willed human being and it was totally her decision to make to continue with the campaign. What would you all suggest she and he do? Go home and sit around waiting for the end? How sick is that??
It is amazing to me how judgmental some people can be. As the old Indian saying goes "walk ten miles in another's mocassins before passing judgement".
Posted by: Marcia DiClemente | May 31, 2007 4:09:58 PM
If she is terminally ill, why does Elizabeth Edwards walk around with that foolish grin/happy face all the time--as if she is in denial?? Maybe living in a huge mansion, having the best medical care at your disposal, and a husband you strangely believe to be an important person in the scheme of things is kind of a high. Tragic. I wish her the best but agree that she should be home with her kids, not running herself and them ragged in what will be a failed campaign anyway as Pretty Boy is seen through by the masses.
Posted by: Stephanie Sharf | May 31, 2007 4:25:08 PM
I saw Elizabeth up close.. She looks wonderful as ever, and I know that God is going to help through this..
Lets keep those prayers going for Elizabeth.. She is an awesome lady.

John Edwards has promoted more plans to get this sick nation out of the morass foisted upon us by the Bush administration than any other candidate.
He has fought tirelessly for the poor and disenfranchised in this country. I suppose this is what is bothering you.
And for those who think EE would put her illness out there for a sympathy vote guess again. This is not how these people operate. John Edwards in the last election told his staff that anyone who brought up the subject of his son Wade's death would be fired immediately. It was not brought up until EE's book was published and she discussed how she dealt with this tragedy.
Posted by: Marcia DiClemente | May 31, 2007 7:38:10 PM
Stephanie: What would you have her do, cry all the time?? I just happen to have the same type cancer she has and I choose to live my life, not go around looking for sympathy. A smile does not equate with denial! Like Elizabeth, I don't know how much time I have left and I choose to LIVE as long as I can, and spend as much time as possible with my children and grandchildren. I will not sit around and feel sorry for myself! I do not have her wealth, but I don't hold her's against her either. While I don't have her views politically, I don't hate her for her beliefs. You might have a little bit of compassion!!
