McCain Vows to Go to the 'Gates of Hell' with a Smile
May 03, 2007 11:31 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., vowed to follow Osama Bin Laden "to the gates of hell" during Thursday's Republican presidential debate in an effort to contrast himself with comments made last week by former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass.
"We will do whatever is necessary. We will track him down. We will catch him. We will bring him to justice and I'll follow him to the gates of hell," said McCain before cracking a smile which gave the impression to some viewers that perhaps he viewed his own answer as being over the top.
McCain's Bin Laden comments came one week after Romney downplayed the value of catching Bin Laden. Last week, in an interview with the Associated Press, Romney said, "It's not worth moving heaven and earth spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person," while maintaining that he supports a broader effort to defeat Islamic Jihad.
McCain called Romney's comment "naive" in a conference call with conservative bloggers last week but Thursday's debate was the first time that he had the opportunity to speak about the Al Qaeda leader in the presence of his rival for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
Romney defended last week's comments by saying that he does not want to buy into what he called the "Democratic pitch" that the threat posed by Jihadists will be solved if only Bin Laden is captured.
"It's more than Osama bin Laden," said Romney. "But he is going to pay and he will die."

Incredibly interesting. But, how about some real questions instead of just supporting posturing-related gotchas?
