Richardson Challenges Bush on Immigration
May 01, 2007 11:24 AM
ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: With nationwide immigration protests planned, White House hopeful Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., is challenging President Bush to renew his commitment to immigration reform.
"I am disappointed the President has retreated from his previous position favoring realistic reform to a position that virtually guarantees nothing will be accomplished," said Richardson in a released statement.
Richardson, who, if elected, would be the first Hispanic president, also said the President's plan forcing undocumented workers to return to their home countries and pay for legal entry is unworkable.
"The majority of illegal immigrants in the United states are hardworking, law-abiding people," said Richardson. "They don't have that kind of money and it is unreasonable to force them to leave the country."
Instead, Richardson is proposing a plan to put many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants on the practical path towards citizenship. His plan also calls for strengthening the border and stiffer penalties for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
Richardson has worked hard to portray himself as more than just the Hispanic candidate. Still, he landed in the spotlight last week after admitting he took longer to call for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign because he is Hispanic.
When questioned about this comment at the debate in South Carolina, the Governor admitted to it, but added he did call for Gonzales' resignation after hearing his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

I think that the immigrants should not complain when they come into this country with free room and board. The y receive tax free loans and educations when americans born in this country have such a hard time recieving anything.
Also, we should fix our people first before anyone else.
They should not be complaining when they have no right to be here in the frist place.
Do they pay taxes or vote or even contribute to this country.
No they work and send money over to their people in their country.
I do belive that with people should come to this country but only in the proper order.
Wait their turn and file the paperwork, just like americans do.
We as americans can not go to another country and receive half of what they do here.
We adhere to their beiliefs, values and ways of thinking.
But no way else in the world do they do what we do. Attempt to changes laws and policies that have been in place for centuries, they come here and whatt to changes things. They have no right to that since they weren't born here or even contrbute to this country.
