'Roe' Endorses Abortion Opponent
May 24, 2007 3:14 PM
ABC News' Julia Bain Reports: Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback, R-Kan., announced Thursday he has received the endorsement of Norma McCorvey aka "Jane Roe" in the landmark 1973 abortion case Roe v. Wade.
Since the case, McCorvey has reversed her stance on abortion and, in a statement released by the campaign, the former abortion rights plaintiff cites Brownback's long record on the controversial issue as the basis for her support.
Brownback, who describes himself as a "pro-life, whole-life" candidate is seeking to cast himself as the one true conservative in the Republican primary.
In her endorsement, McCorvey questions the motives of the other Republican presidential candidates such as former Governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., who have only recently embraced anti-abortion rights positions.
"I can appreciate as much as anyone the importance of the pro-life movement accepting converts," McCorvey said in a statement, "However, it should give us great concern when certain politicians join the pro-life movement just prior to announcing a run for president in the Republican primary. Conversions are critical, but so is sincerity."
Romney, who embraced abortion rights when campaigning for a Senate seat against incumbent Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., in 1994, insists he has always personally opposed.
Another Brownback rival, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y., has said he also personally opposes abortion but, unlike Romney, has also stated his public support for abortion rights.
Abortion is an important issue for the Kansas Senator who has said that the repeal of Roe v. Wade would "be a glorious day of human liberty and freedom."

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference 'Roe' Endorses Abortion Opponent:
Abortion is going to be a much bigger issue in the Republican race than many people -- including many socially liberal Republicans who are supporting Giuliani -- think (for social liberals, make that "hope") it will be.
A third of Republicans are always supporting a socially liberal candiate -- going back to Ford and even further back to Rockefeller. So now that ever-present third is supporting Giuliani.
The problem now for social conservatives is that their vote is spread out over several nominees, and that's what gives Giuliani the big lead. This oddity won't last. As the conservative field narrows, so will Giuliani's lead. When it gets down to either Thompson or Romney against Giuliani, Giuliani will lose.
And the reason will be abortion (and judges).
(I can't imagine McCain having any realistic shot after the immigration bill, and Gingrich carries far too heavy of a sleaze bucket with him to have any chance at all, and the lesser names will simply drop away over time.)
I can see Brownback or Huckabee getting the VP slot to gain favor with social conservatives, whose favor is an absolute must if the Republicans want to win in 2008. Of the two, Huckabee would be the better campaigner, so I actually expect the VP slot will go to him.

If your against abortion, don't have one. I'm more concerned about employment, healthcare, price of gas, and immigration. Every election its the same old thing, abortions, gays, death penalty, and gun control. I could care less, none of this affects my bottom line at the end of the day.

What a bloodlusting cult the Republicans are.
For a party that’s supposedly so big on defending “the culture of life”, they seem to promote war, death and torture with almost unrestrained glee.
And for the Jesus-freak knuckledraggers who make up the GOP base, that’s truly all that matters.
It’s all about the faux masculinity and the Reagan/cowboy/Rambo/John Wayne fantasy world that they’ve been living in since 1980.
Bloodlust, as long as it isn’t their blood, or their children’s blood.
The Republicans are like some sort of football game.

Abortion is a self-correcting sin. Those who have them produce fewer future voters then those who don't. About 80% of children grow up having the same political leanings as their parents have. The blunt mathematical truth is: the future will be "abortion-free", not "free abortions". Even the Chinese are rebelling against abortion, now.

I find it repugnant that McCorvey now is a vocal opponent of abortion. How extrodinarily selfish. She was able to exercise that right and now is intent on shuting the door to millions of other American women. Her own regret over having an abortion should not be a factor to denying other women the same right.

She never had the abortion.
According to Wekipedia:The case took three years to reach the United States Supreme Court. In the meantime, McCorvey had given birth. At the time of the case, she claimed her pregnancy was the result of rape, she now claims that to be untrue.[2]

Apparently, Joe and Drew lack any sense of empathy for the number of women who are faced with unwanted pregnancies every year. Especially telling was the comment that "if you're against abortion, don't have one!" All well and good for men to be pontificating to women, but unfortunately, men outnumber women 84-16 in the Senate and 8-1 on the SCOTUS, so guess where that issue is heading if Joe's and Drew's male chauvanism lurks in the hearts of those men.
Expect the number of reported rapes by strangers to rise astronomically in the year after Roe v Wade is overturned, making it impossible for police departments to tell the difference between the real stranger rapes and those that are invented to take advantage of the inevitable exception that will be passed into new legislation on the matter.

I met Sen. Brownback last September and he seemed like a sincere, decent man who could answer questions without a tornado machine.
He has my support, especially concerning abortion. The sooner our nation faces the scope of this violence, the better. According to the research arm of Planned Parenthood, over 4,000 abortions are reported DAILY in the U.S. That figure comes near the amount of U.S. troops who have died in Iraq over four YEARS.
So people who claim to be both pro-choice and anti-war need to face numbers here. The death of a fetus or a service person is a loss to our human family. Where the service person agrees to fight for our country, the fetus has no rights whatsoever and no way to defend his or her own life.

I have never known Romney to "embrace" abortion rights but embrace that women have a tough choice and it's their right to make the choice. He has always been personally pro-life and feels now that abortion issues should be left to the states to decide. That's not rocket science or a flip-flop.

How about the men who also promote this lifestyle with their own promiscuity with "those" women. If someone is against abortion, she should not have one. However, I would abort even if the procedure was outlawed. The risk of death is better than forced motherhood -- a leghold trap for women.

America, indeed most of the world, is sliding into the abyss. The convenience killing of the unborn is just one sign of where we are heading. The media is so controlling most people have forgotten to think for themselves. This is why candidates for office need megabucks to win elections.
9/11 will be nothing compared to what will hit us in the near future, and if it were not for the massive loss of life, I would welcome it. America needs to wake up.

After reading all of the comments today, I do not see anyone mentioning how individuals have a choice and responsibility for theirselves in lying down with someone in the first place, then cry for an abortion! The many abortions reported by Planned Parenthood is so sad and so many of them are young people that don't have a clue what procreation is all about, let alone know what relationships are about.
What does that tell you about where young people are directed in the four walls of their homes! When you see someone about to jump off a cliff you try to stop them or get some kind of help, that is what is needed in this election, to stop killing babies. I feel there is less shame in having your baby adopted than to killing it.
