ABC Draws All Candidates for August Debates
June 19, 2007 3:58 PM
ABC News' Jordan Hultine Reports: All of the current presidential contenders have confirmed their attendance at the two presidential debates being hosted by ABC News in Iowa this August.
The debates will be co-hosted by ABC News affiliate station ABC5 WOI-TV.
The Republicans will debate Sunday, August 5, and the Democrats will follow on Sunday, August 19. Both will be held at Drake University.
All 10 of the current Republican candidates have confirmed their attendance, including: Sen. Sam Brownback, R-K.S.; Former Governor Jim Gilmore; Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani; Former Governor Mike Huckabee; Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif.; Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Rep. Ron Paul, R-T.X.; Former Governor Mitt Romney; Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.; and Former Governor Tommy Thompson.
Co-sponsoring the Democratic debate is the Democratic Party of Iowa and the Democratic National Committee.
All eight Democratic candidates have confirmed their attendance, including: Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del.; Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.; Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.; Former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.; Former Sen. Mike Gravel, D-Alaska; Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio; Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.; and Governor Bill Richardson.
ABC News chief Washington correspondent and anchor of This Week, George Stephanopoulos, will moderate both 90-minute debates that will air live during the timeslot This Week normally occupies. Stephanopoulos will be joined by by David Yepsen of The Des Moines Register in questioning the candidates.
Stephanopoulos said, "I think it’s terrific that we are able to continue our On the Trail series in Iowa with two live programs from a state crucial to the election process. This is an historic election and I look forward to bringing our viewers the first and only Presidential candidate forums on Sunday morning television."

everyone knows that Stephanopoulos is a Hillary guy. Maybe there should be a moderator who will ask all the candidates tough questions, not just 7 out of 8.

Before long the Republican race is going to be three people, and they will rank in this order: Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney. This Iowa debate (August 5) and then the Iowa straw pull (August 14) will be the final two scenes in this long opening act. The second act which leads up to the Iowa caucuses starts in September. McCain and Gingrich and all of the second tier candidates (with the possible exception of Huckabee, who could be heading toward the VP slot) will be off the stage for good by then. Most of the poll support from all of these erstwhile candidates will go to Fred Thompson. The main suspense left for the second act will be over whether or not Thompson can beat Romney in Iowa in the caucus. If Thompson does beat Romney in it, then the nomination race is over right there, though New Hampshire and South Carolina will serve to make that ending clearer. (All of the states who moved up their primaries will find they once again are too late to do anything but put the last touches on what was already decided in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.)

I would like to ask or have you ask the
Pesitentail Canidates what are they goingto do about this. This is wrong!!!!
ALL OF IT.
Incredible, unforgivable and shamefully: Read Below
Love him or loathe him, he nailed this one right on the head..........
By Rush Limbaugh:
I think the vast differences in compensation between victims of the September 11 casualty and those who die serving our country in Uniform are profound. No one is really talking about it either, because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11. Well, I can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September 11 attack, you're going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million.
If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable.
Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt.
Keep in mind that some of the people who are getting an average of $1.185 million up to $4.7 milli on are complaining that it's not enough Their deaths were tragic, but for most, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Soldiers put themselves in harms way FOR ALL OF US, and they and their families know the dangers.
We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11 families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation a s well.
You see where this is going, don't you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over 50 years of entitlement politics in this country. It's just really sad. Every time a pay raise comes up for the military, they usually receive next to nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live in low-rent housing Make sense?
However, our own US Congress voted themselves a raise. Many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one time to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month. And most are now equal to being millionaires plus. They do not receive Social Security on retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7, they may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed them in harm's way receives a pension of $15,000 per month.
I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now
fighting.
" When do we finally do something about this?" If this doesn't seem fair to you, it is time to forward this to as many people as you can.
How many people
CAN YOU
send this to?

How many
WILL YOU

When will the news stations give us what the people really want? RON PAUL!
Everybody in the media knows this guy is being censored and yet nobody has the guts to stand up and say anything about it. Somebody please do right by this country and tell the truth about Ron Paul's support. It is quickly growing.

Ron Paul is by far the most interesting candidate. I don't know if he is right for the country, but I can listen to him without cringing. It's easy to listen to intelligent thought, which is something I haven't heard in at least 6 years.

Ron Paul...anything else is fascism.

I wish to add to the comments above. I am especially glad that the pension numbers for congress was mentioned as well as the raises they approve for themselves. The stand alone candidate who has not participated in either of these exercises is Congressman Ron Paul. He has never voted for a pay increase for congress and is not accepting the pension.
He also agrees with the fact that the entitlement system as it stands is something we cannot afford. It needs to change. Starting in 2018 social security will begin running a at a deficit. Something has to be done, and soon.
Also, as related to the families asking for benefits, there is no prescription thaty works for everyone. It is disheartening when you think about losing a loved one of your own and seeing someone else receive large amounts of money for their loss. In some ways, wrong place or not, does that not physhlogically almost "cheapen" their memory. It's like the firemen whose bodies were never recovered from the rubble because they didn't have the time to dig them all out. What about those families who never even got to see them one last time.
Also, I would ask this. Would the families be struggling as much if they were allowed to keep more of the money that they earn instead of sending so much of it to Washington as income tax? Ron Paul is the person who wants government to be more economically frugal by operating within it's means, empowering the work force allowing them keep their own money, and stop the federal reserve from printing money from thin air. It didn't work for Germany and it certainly is not working here.
Watch the cadidates closely, see them dance around the issues and puff themselves up under false pretenses. Mitt Romney wants to lessen the national debt, but under his plan we will barely cover what we borrom from China in a years time, meaning no savings and leaving us almost exactly where we are now.
I am looking for a leader who will stick to their convictions and not change their mind according to the audience they are addressing, but because of their principles. Honesty can be more than a political ideal and I am so glad the Ron Paul has the courage to step forward and run.

Before long the the Republican Race is going to be one person: Ron Paul. Jake and others like him can ignore the obvious, but as much as you TRY, you cannot actually controll the entire country. They are all individuals who are sick of being told what to believe. The word will go out, even if it doesn't go out through the boob tube.
Just to verify, the debate is going to be AIRED at 8:00AM CST on August 5th?
