Ann Romney: Family dog loved his kennel

Share

June 30, 2007 4:48 PM

ABC News' Jake Tapper reports: Ann Romney, the wife of Republican presidential candidate and Mitt Romney, says that the family's dog, Seamus, enjoyed being in a kennel on the roof of their car. The comments appeared in a blog post on the campaign's official website in response to dog-lovers who say the family was acting cruelly in 1983 when it drove 12-hours from Boston to Ontario, Canada with the dog inside a kennel on top of the car.

"...he loved it," Mrs. Romney said. "Every time he saw it, he jumped up on the tailgate, walked in, and lay down. It was just like the kennel he jumped up on the tailgate, walked in, and lay down. It was just like the kennel he curled up in at home."

Mrs. Romney says the Irish setter "rode in an enclosed kennel, not in the open air." She appeared to be responding to apparent confusion over media reports that said the dog was "strapped" to the car. Most major media outlets have reported the incident as Mrs. Romney depicted it, with the dog inside a kennel -- but with kennel strapped to the roof. Romney goes on to describe her family as "a dog family", and that their dog "lived to a ripe old age, basking in the affection of a large family."

Animal rights activists were outraged when the incident was first reported in a Boston Globe piece about Mitt Romney's management style. A Time Magazine article quoted Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals as saying it was "a lesson in cruelty that was ... wrong for [his children] to witness."

What is all the uproar about? I'm sure that they made pit stops along the way and let the dog stretch. If these people cared as much about the treatment of humans as much as they do about the treatment of animals, our society would be alot better off.

This is obviously a political scam in an effort to discredit Romney. If this is the best the media can get on Romney (Doggie Gate) then he is my candidate.

This actually shows me Romney is a candidate that spends time with his family. I think there's a lot to be learned from this. If more candidates took time for their families they could be an example to all Fathers in this country, may be, just may be, there would be fewer affairs and divorces.

The fact that with all of Romney's wealth, the media and political campaigns can only bring up a dog carrier incident that happened 23 years ago tells me a lot about Romney's personal integrity.

This report is truely indicitive of the tainted reporting in most commercial "news"papers. I find them very suitable to mask windows for painting as they( the "News"papers) mask their lack of balance, integrity and news.

I guess the dog loved it so much that he dispensed a brown liquid all over the car. He was hosed off and put back on top of the car.

How much fun is it to be sitting on top of a car even in an enclosed kennel, and all wet?

And how does Ann know the dog "loved it" versus having no other options? My dogs love to go IN the car, not on TOP of it, because it would never in a million years occur to me that being on top of a car was a safe place for a dog.

Good grief. People will do anything to let themselves off the hook of being borderline barbaric.

I never rode on the roof but I've rode in the bed of a truck when I was a kid. I've also seen lots of dogs running free in truck beds over the years. I know I enjoyed it and what dogs I've known never seemed to mind. Ever notice they stick their heads out car windows. I'm not even fond of Gov. Romney but give me a break. It was a long time ago. What was perfectly normal back then has been bent all out of shape.

Having transported my Vizlas (Hungarian pointers) in a commericially designed dog "kennel" in the back of my Jeep Commando on trips I can see where securing one to the top of my Subaru Outback would be a better choice than in the back of a pickup truck in the same kennel. On top of the car there's cleaner fresh air. Too many "Rights" people are simply fanatics and can't truly understnd that the loyal loving dog really isn't some human child. Dogs love to be able to stick their heads out of car windows. No one is complaining about that. There's no difference, really, with being in a secure dog kennel secured to the top racks of a station wagon.
Rights fanatics as well as any politically motivated fanatic should stay under the rock they came from. Like the man said one time, "Have you no decency?"

This man is a millionaire MANY times over, and the best care he can give the family dog is strapped atop his car in a kennel on a LONG road trip? Never in a million years would I treat any of my animals that way. If I had his money my animals would travel in the same comfort and safety I do. I don't have his money and my animals already get that level of care. If this is how he treats his dog, there's no doubt in my mind that Americans would suffer under his leadership.

Interesting point ChrisInNY..."Treat them like luggage..." Isn't that how they travel on airplanes? How is this any different than putting a pet in a carrier to be stowed on an airplane? Or ship or train or... car?

Those "animal rights" people would have snit fit if they saw how hunting dogs and Greyhounds are transported.

I think that people will do anything to destroy a person running for office. Why not just stick to the issues, rather than drag everyone down as far as we can? Is there a person on earth that hasn't done something or said something that they regret? Can the person DO THE JOB???

This is classic. Romney is such a perfect candidate, what do they do? Look for something totally benign, even POSITIVE (the dog loved it, says Ann!), and make it look bad. This is like when they attacked Romney's family history. Oh my gosh people! Is he so perfect that you can't even find anything bad, that you have to make a good story bad and attack not him, but his family history of two decades or more ago?

I guess it is possible to be so insensitive that you really don't realize that you are being insensitive. At any rate, I'm incredulous that there was not one person in that automobile, that had the tiniest scrap of compassion. I guess it would have been more understandable had it been done by kids, but to have parents ok'ing the deal, is mind-boggling to me, and that they still think it is alright is an absolute tragedy.

Strap Romney himself to the roof of a car for 12 hours, and see how he likes it. This man and his excuse-making wife shouldn't be allowed control over a neighborhood barbeque, let alone a country.

I'm sure that Rmoney thinks that slaves loved their kennels too.
