Bush Calls Immigration Bill "Amnesty"
June 26, 2007 10:18 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein reports: President Bush has spent a whole lot of time in recent months claiming that the immigration bill isn't "amnesty."
But in describing the measure Tuesday morning, an apparent slip of the tongue suggested otherwise -- providing fodder for the talk-radio crowd that loathes the bill and wants it defeated in the Senate.
"You know, I've heard all the rhetoric -- you've heard it, too -- about how this is amnesty. Amnesty means that you've got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that," Bush said, according to the official White House transcript.
This just might get the attention of Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh -- and it's terrible timing for the president, with a key vote in the Senate Tuesday afternoon.
UPDATE: At 11:43 am, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow released a statement saying the president "misspoke."
The statement reads:
"This has been construed as an assertion that comprehensive immigration reform legislation before the Senate offers amnesty to immigrants who came here illegally. That is the exact opposite of the president’s long-held and often-stated position.
"President Bush has noted repeatedly that the comprehensive reform he supports is not an amnesty bill. Amnesty means forgiving wrongdoing without imposing punishment. The immigration reforms passed in 1986 granted amnesty. The legislation under consideration this year does not. This measure imposes significant punishments on those who came to this country illegally between 1986 and the beginning of this year. In fact, the White House website addresses the myth that the measure is amnesty. For more, go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/06/20070608-10.html."

I voted for this man too, twice, thinking he is the lesser of 2 evils. NEVER again. I am an immigrant, and I see Bush as a trader, an evil trecherous, treasonous trader. Impeach him now. The Senate should kill this travesty and investigate why Bush has not secured the border INTENTIONALLY! That should be reason for impeachment. And let's throw out every elitist pig that votes FOR CLOTURE on this bll, regardless of party!

It's pathetic that this is the best that ABC can come up with. This was just a slip of the tongue, like all the ones he's made in the past.
How about actually doing some real reporting and asking Bush whether what he supports will be perceived as amnesty around the world, no matter how he tries to lie about it? If most Americans see what Bush aupports as amnesty, won't that even more pronounced in foreign countries, and won't millions and millions and millions of people try to come here illegally?
Please get out there and do some real reporting.

Obviously, he meant the say that amnesty means you pay *no* price ...
Another slip of the tongue, incidence of dyslexia, whatever you want to call it.
But it's a bad definition. Exempting someone from the operative statutory consequences of their lawbreaking is amnesty. Obviously, this is amnesty.
No tax amnesty I've ever heard of waived fees and penalties, just jail time. Is it not amnesty because the fees and penalties remain? Absurd.

This guy is such a disappointment. He is nothing more than another liberal in conservative clothing. The only thing i could have done worse than voting for him would have been if I voted for Gore or Kerry

Bush's fault

The people who made this country great came from Europe. The people who will cause the downfall of this country are the illegals who have no skill and little education. We are creating a Third World country within our borders. The economic burden that this will cause if this bill is passed, will be catastrophic for future generations. Our government is selling Americans out to for the benefit of big business. Totally disgraceful........

I don't know ANY conservatives that are still carrying water for this president.

No one is going to come rescue us from the Government , I have lived my entire life under Ted Kennedy and his ilk .I don't think the people have the courage to burn Washington down and run them out of town starting on K street all the way to the Capitol.

Bill, Paul, Mike, and Rachel:
Plenty of us who voted twice for Bush still support him. Did you hear about ANY of the Supreme Court cases decided yesterday?
Jordana:
You voted for Bush twice, knowing he didn't close the border "intentionally"? Either way, you will "never again" have to vote for him, don't worry.

If Bush wants them here he should invite them to all come live on his ranch and at his father estate in Maine.

Say "Good-bye" to the USA and say "Bienvenidos" to Amexica. American citizens, both liberals and conservatives, have been sold out. Not only is our goverment inept, THEY DONT CARE! We have a ruling class now that does what it thinks is best for them and their families and the rest of us get screwed.

Clearly a simple mix-up of words, something for which Mr. Bush is famous.
I voted for him in 2000 and 2004. I totally disagree with him on this. I don't understand how he sees this issue and why this bill is the right answer. Additionally, he has done a very poor job of explaining it. All he ever says are things like, "people opposed to this bill are not interested in doing what's right for America." He doesn't explain why we're wrong for characterizing this bill the way we do.
I can accept that we disagree on issues. I don't like the way he's handled other issues as well, but I'm not willing to bail on him over one matter. Where he has failed miserably in this case is that he has not gotten in front of a podium and said, "here's what this bill does and here's why it's better than the other options." Lay it out there. Explain.
The opponents of this measure have done a great job of expressing concerns and the President has not done anything to address those concerns.
Additionally, the simple "smell test," if you will, is if you're agreeing with Ted Kennedy, you may want to go back and rethink your plan.

This is the classic "Fruedian slip"! He said exactly what was on his beady little mind and it will weigh heavily against him and his amnesty bill!
CHOKE ON IT mr. president!

I am as conservative as they come and Bush lost my support in this and his girly man handling of the war. I am not ashamed that I voted for him - just look at the other options - but he needs to step up and show those conservative colors that we saw in the first 4 years.

The "talk show crowd" loathes this bill? The majority of Americans (legal ones) loathes this bill. The "talk show crowd" isn't a special interest group of six members, geez.

We have given America away. Anerica is an English speaking nation. Make English the langauge of America. America has laws on how to enter America, Enforce the laws that control our borders. Sent the Illegals back home then they can apply to enter this country the correct way. Enforce America culture If someone wants to fly their countrys flag instead of the Americam flag then they need to go back to their country. If someone comes to America they need to support America. THey need to serve a tour in the American Military, Learn English, Pay Taxes and be an American. Make sending money to foreign countries harder to do. This would stop our jobs going to illegals. Stop our Jobs from being sent to India and China Keep the work in America before we become a third world country.

Any of you folks expressing outrage and surprise just haven't been paying attention during Bush's presidency.
He's not just an idiot. He's not just incompetent. He and his administration are PURPOSEFULLY ruining this country in order to advance their own interests.
They hide behind a veil of secrecy, and are considered by many historians to be THE MOST secretive administration in the history of this country.
Now, are we to believe they are being secretive merely to conceal their incompetence?
Yes, if we are the greatest fools in the history of mankind.
Destroy the middle class. Increase war spending. Tax credits for the super-rich.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I voted for bush twice... not because he was the best choice, but because he was the only choice... This amnesty BS is out of control, I'm sick and tired of this flood of illegal support.. get them the HELL out of our country, and KEEP them out until they can return LEGALLY and can speak the LANGUAGE.

Voted twice for him. The Bush family tricked us again. Republicans have lost my vote for the next election. Maybe for ever. This country will become a Liberal Democratic European type country. God help this great country.
