Edwards Touts Iowa Importance
June 15, 2007 2:47 PM
ABC News' David Muir and Raelyn Johnson Report: Campaigning in Johnston, Iowa on Friday, former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., reiterated just how important that state will be for his '08 campaign.
In third place in the democratic field nationally, Edwards is softening in the polls and trailing in money raised.
"If you don't do well in Iowa it is very hard to win this nomination," said Edwards during a taping of Iowa Public Television's "Iowa Press" program.
"I think John Kerry effectively won the nomination in 2004 when he won the Iowa caucuses," he said.
Edwards will spend the next three days in Iowa, promoting his health care plan. He is advocating forcing health insurance companies to spend 85 percent of the premiums they collect on patient care.
Talking about his qualifications, Edwards said, "We need a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time."
During a news conference with reporters after the taping, Iowa Radio's Kay Henderson held up a package of gum and asked Edwards, "Do you want to walk and chew gum?"
Edwards laughed and said, "I'm not sure I can." The candidate left with almost a dozen campaign workers in tow -- without the gum.

It seems impossible to believe that the dems will again step into the losing column by nominating Hillary or Barack. The national press is bound and determined to follow only these two when it is apparent to the repubs that John Edwards will be the hardest to beat, so they will rally the press to back either Clinton or Obama. We the dems ever learn? If they want a winner choose Edwards.
