Fred Thompson Woos South Carolina
June 27, 2007 4:47 PM
USA TODAY'S 'On Politics' Blog Reports: Actor-lobbyist-former-senator Fred Thompson, yet to announce his presidential bid, is attracting attacks from all over as he shows increasing strength among Republicans.
Thompson leads the Republican field in recent polls of Nevada, South Carolina and Georgia and, as we wrote earlier, is doing well in many other states. Today, reports The State in Columbia, S.C., he got a "rousing welcome" at a party lunch, emphatically rejected the immigration bill that is causing rival John McCain so much trouble in the Senate and with GOP voters, and hinted he'd be back "in a different capacity" to talk more.
Thompson got hit today in a YouTube video for his past opposition to "criminalizing" abortion. As noted by The Shot, a blog about South Carolina politics, several clips of Thompson expressing that view are presented "Law & Order" style in a takeoff on his TV career. It's one of several videos highlighting his earlier, less conservative views on abortion.
The Democratic National Committee has started an anti-Fred campaign in anticipation of a full-fledged candidacy. Among the elements so far:
- An anti-Thompson fundraising site called Stop The Act.
- An e-mail yesterday that says "Tentative Thompson" may be hesitant to get into the race due to his "lackluster" tenure as a Tennessee senator.
- A fundraising letter last week that tried to tie Thompson and his lobbying career to what the DNC calls "the Republican culture of corruption." (Full disclosure: The appeal linked to this USA TODAY story on Thompson's time as a lobbyist).

Fred Thompson will win South Carolina, and then he'll win all the rest of the South. Once he gets into the race, the people of South Carolina are no longer going to support McCain or Giuliani.
Most obviously, the people of South Carolina aren't going to support McCain because of his immigration bill. That bill has destroyed McCain's campaign everywhere in the South and the border states.
They also won't support Giuliani because of the social issues, not once they get to know where Giuliani is on all of those issues. It's not just one social issue. It's an accumulation of all of them. Giuliani married his cousin, has been divorced twice, carried on a sleazy adulterous affair in the spotlight of the media when he was Mayor, and then he moved in with two homosexual men while getting his divorce. And then to raise the YUK factor even higher, he has been photographed in public on at least three occasions dressed up in drag. (And that's not even mentioning his liberal positions on immigration and gun control.)
That all seemed to sit OK with most people in New York, which is the country's center of decadence and filth anyway, but it will not sit OK with most people in South Carolina (and in the rest of the South).
McCain and Giuliani both are in an irreversible slide in the polls (for the above reasons), and Fred Thompson now gives all their fleeing supporters a "winning" place to go. It's that simple.

Fred Thompson will take Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Texas. Beyond that I believe he'll take Georgia, Virginia, and Mississipi. After those states though, I think he's going to have to start actually working to get out the votes, as other states are more than willing then to elect a Giuliani, McCain, or Romney.

A right wing fringe peacock in the garden of politics.

Jake is right on the money. As a Dem I like Thompson more than the others. I will vote Dem all the way through, but Thompson has a health issue and not physically fit either. Romney is powerful and smart-but he can't win Ohio. Hillary can win Ohio and New Mexico and Arkansas. She wins.

It is clear the dems are feeling pretty uneasy about a Thompson candidacy, and Squeenter suspect they should be.
I asks agains; will Hillary insist upon artificially heightening her stature in the debates? Will she demand the cameras not reveal that she is little old lady compared to tall man Thompson, and probably the other repubs as well? We shall see.
Who are the dems kidding by saying Fred's senate career was lacking of lusters? Compared to Hillary and Obama? Give Squeenter a break, you hypocrite dems! The only dem candidates with long senate careers are polling in single digits, so obviously it isn't even something your own party members are concerned with! How bogus are ye indeed!
