Fred Thompson Says He'll Run (Sort of)
June 12, 2007 8:20 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Former Sen. Fred Thompson R-Tenn.,-- the yet-to-be-announced 11th Republican contender -- just finished taping "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in Burbank, California.
Thompson did not officially announce his candidacy, but he did acknowledge that the presidential waters are "warm." Leno asked him, "Do you want the job of president of the United States," and Thompson replied, "I've never craved the job of president, but I want to do some things that only a president can do, so the answer is 'yes.'"
Thompson was Leno's first guest -- he held "The Tonight Show" spotlight for two segments, roughly 13 minutes.
Thompson spent most of his first segment "introducing" himself and sharing his personal history: a shout-out to his hometown, Lawrenceburg, TN, his stint as minority council during the Watergate investigations and his acting career. Of his film career, Thompson acknowledged that "there were few, that I'd say, that were not necessarily my finest hour." The best he could come up with was an appearance on "Sex and the City," where he was shown on a television screen within the show.
Thompson also promoted his website - ImwithFred.com - again, which has been up and running since his post-debate chat with Sean Hannity last week.
Still no word on when he'll announce - as he said last week on Fox News," The Fourth of July is just as plausible as any other, but it doesn't mean that it's going to be the Fourth of July."
In the meantime, according to several media reports, Thompson has been tapping various people to join his team. Among them, the Weekly Standard reported that Liz Cheney has jumped on-board.
Thompson will be making stops in South Carolina and New Hampshire at the end of the month.

You folks are reporters and editors, you have access to MR. thompson. Please someone tell him that when he comes down from this ego trip he is on and has to start campaigning that the republicans out here, you know those of us that work for a living. We can not put our support behind a 20 yr paid lobbiest who represented foriegn interest. We are not looking for another insider. Lead lobbiest for Mccain-Finegold. Advisor for the Lewis Libby Defense Fund. Another tough talking defferment holder from Vietnam. A divorcee who remarried a "girl" 4 years younger than his Daughter. Come on save him the imbarassment of showing this new first lady to the world. He can never be the moral compass. Ann

By the way, I put a link in my name to a website that answers and refutes a lot of the trash you'll see. Its the Fred Thompson FAQ.
Now lets grab the axe Ann is grinding and peel back the deception she is attempting to spin here.
Ego trip?
Gimme a break. He is in this because its what he perceives as being the right time for a real conservative to make a difference. Didn't you even watch the interview? He specifically said he had no desire to be president, only to be able to do things that only a president can do. So Ann, you're mis-characterizing things and basically lying.
Lobbiest?
He lobbied for at total of 6 yes just SIX clients over a 2 decade span while he was practicing law and acting. It was infrequent and part-time - the clients included Westinghouse Electric, General Electric, and the Tennessee Savings and Loan League. Not quite so scary as you would lead people to believe. The "Foreign" you failed to fully mention was Britain's Lloyd's of London, who was being hammered by asbestos insurance claims. So, Ann, its Not the way you painted it - since you left out those very important facts of the matter.
Insider? He has been on advisory boards and such, but is hardly an inside the beltway person. He's been splitting time in DC, work in Hollywood and his home in Virginia. Hardly an "insider". So another lie Ann. Why do you lie?
McCain-Feingold? He's already said that it didn't work as intended and he thinks we should just scrap it - look at the interview he gave to John Fund and Chris Wallace back in MARCH - you seem to have left that out. Pretty convenient for you to ignore those facts, hmmm.
As for Libby - he got interested because he saw a guy getting railroaded by an out of control special prosecutor. Nothing wrong with that.
Divorce? True - but another half-truth of yours. His ex still speaks highly of him and will campaign for him, and unlike the other divorced candidates, he waited 17 SEVENTEEN years to remarry.
As for the age difference, he is a 64 year old man married to a 40 year old Lawyer, and former Republican political strategists. Ann, 40 is hardly robbing the cradle as you try to do with your smear and innuendo.
So, Fred is not what you are painting him to be.
I call you out - I question the disingenuous nature of your statements, and your use of innuendo, half truths and context shifting, and your basic dishonesty and use of loaded language and pejorative terms.
In short Ann, I've shown that you're a liar, and a scurrilous one.
All the hallmarks of a professional smear artist.
I have a question for you: Are you the same person thats parroting these same "attack scripts" on the net in several places?
So Ann - who is paying you to shill and Smear?
Come clean.

A very disappointing performance, I thought. Thompson was flat–low on energy, not very interesting, unengaged and unengaging. If this is the best he can do, he’s not going to be the factor many of us expected.

I loved Thompson on Jay. He came across to OUR living room as real, straightforward and thoughtful. I have never seen him as an actor so I only know him as a senator. And I liked what I saw when he was one.

I'll either vote for Rudy or Edwards. Thompson I am still looking into it.

Thompson came across as another "tough guy" Republican which means he will probably back Bush's failed foreign policies leaving our country deeper in debt and our allies hating us even more than they do now. This is not what the United States needs.
