Fred Thompson's Personal Politics

USA Today's 'On Politics' Blog Reports: Republican presidential not-quite-candidate Fred Thompson talks about how his happy personal life has allowed him to raise his political sights in an unusually personal interview with a conservative think tank.

The comments came in a 15-minute interview with Peter Robinson, a fellow at the Hoover Institution. It was conducted Monday and posted today.

Robinson noted that the former Tennessee senator has an "immensely successful" acting career, "a happy second marriage" to Jeri Kehn and two children, one of whom is only eight months old. "What are you doing here," he asked Thompson, preparing to make a "heavy sacrifice?"

Thompson said he and his wife talked about the toll of a campaign on their children, but his wife also pointed out that "you need to think about what kind of world they're going to grow up into. She said, 'You could do something about that.' "

He added, "Strangely enough, when things are going so well in your personal life, it frees you up" to look at the country and what you might contribute. "Before, I had other things, collateral issues, unsettled in my personal life and so forth. It's not like that anymore," Thompson said.

"If a person has an opportunity to make even a small impact," he said, "you gotta seriously consider that. I've got the kind of wife and the kind of stability now that allows me to do that."

For more Thompson, see our post earlier today on his appearance on NBC's Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
