ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: One week after announcing that he will not invest resources in the Iowa Republican Party's August Straw Poll, the Giuliani campaign sought to underscore the former New York mayor's commitment to competing in next year's Iowa caucuses by informing ABC News that Giuliani will debate his GOP rivals in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 5.

". . . Mayor Giuliani is committed to providing voters with as much information as possible in order for them to evaluate their next president and he strongly believes that debates are an important part of the electoral process," wrote Giuliani campaign manager Mike DuHaime in a letter to ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, the debate’s moderator.

Former Gov. Mitt Romney R-Mass., followed Giuliani's announcement with an acceptance of his own.

"Governor Romney strongly believes in providing the Republican voters every opportunity to listen to their Party's presidential candidates and their visions for our future. We are committed to Iowa and are pleased to be a part of the ABC News debate in Des Moines. We look forward to more debates in the future," his spokesman Matt Rhoades said in a written statement.

The Aug. 5 debate is being co-sponsored by ABC News and ABC5/WOI-TV. ABC News and its local Des Moines affiliate are also sponsoring a debate with the Democratic presidential candidates on Aug. 19.

Will ABC be inviting all of the announced candidates?

Another selective debate? Giuliani has been divorced more times than Romney has been hunting. Where's Ron Paul? Did he get invited or just pet candidates?

Don't worry -- Dr Paul will be there, but this lame blog did not mention him....as if Rudy and Mitt were the only ones that counted.

Can't wait for this. I missed the previous debates and had to catch up. Hopefully they don't give short shrift to Ron Paul, like this article did.

Thanks for hosting Ron Paul, ABC. I will be watching!

ABC is up to their old tricks. Makes it sound like they are the only candidates attending. To my knowledge, all the other candidates still in the race are going to be there. Why name these two? These two are the ones declined to do the Youtube/CNN debate, due to "scheduling conflicts" that Ron Paul and McCain agreed to attend. On that same day, Romney is having his hair polished, and Rudy G. is going dress shopping.

Ron Paul won ABC's after-debate poll after the last debate: http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/june2007/070607ABC.htm

Great news, ABC. Just give all the candidates equal treatment, and I am happy.

I agree. As long as they give him at least 5 questions to answer. I'll be happy. I don't understand why the media tries to basically decide who our next president is going to be for us.

When the next president comes to power, hopefully it will be Ron Paul, hopefully we can force public debates to give each candidate equal air time.

Just one of the million clean up actions after the worst administration in the history of democracy.

Although I am a Canadian, I very much appreciate why odinary Americans are attracted to Ron Paul's message, and why the Main Stream Media will do everything possible to suppress this message. Thanks to the internet, the only place where one can obtain uncensored opinion, I don't think the Ron Paul revolution can be stopped. The internet has become the great equalizer where the voice of ordinary citizens can be heard, not just the voices of powerful and wealthy special interest groups who now control the Main Stream Media and who have used it as a tool to subvert western democracies. Therefore, Ron Paul is the great hope not just for America but for the entire Western World.

Let freedom reign.

Ron Paul will dominate in this debate...that's if ABC asks him legitimate questions.

Ron Paul does not belong on the republican debate, he is a liberal democrat, l sure would not want him for my President.
