Giuliani and Hannity Talk Commitment
June 13, 2007 12:45 AM
ABC News' Jan Simmonds Reports: Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani R-N.Y. appeared on Fox News Channel’s Hannity & Colmes Tuesday evening to discuss his "12 Commitments to the American People." In the interview, taped earlier in the day in New Hampshire with co-host Sean Hannity, Giuliani went through his proposal point by point covering a wide range of issues.
"This is 12 commitments that I'm making for the things that we will do if I am elected president and the idea of it is to point us toward the future, to talk about what we're going to do in 2009, 2010, 2011, moving toward the future," said Giuliani. "Get our eyes off just the fighting and the bickering and all of this stuff and we're going to just look at what's going on right now."
Speaking on the issue of immigration reform, Giuliani mimicked a statement made by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) during last week’s Republican debate saying immigration reform could be achieved by enforcing the existing laws.
"It is possible to end illegal immigration," Giuliani explained. "It could be done within existing law. You don't even need to have a law for it."
The former New York City Mayor then went on to detail how he would work towards expanding current immigration measures by putting in place a physical fence and technological fence on the border along with a biometric singular I.D and a complete database of immigrants in the United States among other measures.
Giuliani also broke some new ground in the interview, talking specifically about how he would reduce the size of government.
"You have to do a Reagan-like reduction in the size of government spending by imposing targets for budget cuts on agencies, you have to make a commitment that you're not going to rehire half of the federal employees who retire over the next four years," said Giuliani. "That is about 42 percent of the federal work force."
A theme repeated in several of his "Twelve Commitments" is accountability and transparency in government.
"Accountability in Washington is to set up a Fedstat program like the Compstat we had in New York for all of the basic agencies to make sure they're accountable, to make sure they're being run like a business, to make sure they have goals," added Giuliani. "You measure those goals every week, every month. Ultimately, we put it on the Internet."
Mayor Giuliani plans on expanding on these twelve points through a variety of methods over the next several months in what Sean Hannity described as a Giuliani version of Newt Gingrich’s highly successful "Contract with America".

As a Catholic, I oppose Rudy on his stance on Gay rights and abortion and divorce. Why doesn't Hannity, also a Catholic??? I asked this on hannity.com and was banned permanently for "contempt of host." So much for freedom of speech.
