Giuliani Slams Edwards on Terrorism
June 08, 2007 12:22 PM
ABC News' Jan Simmonds and Raelyn Johnson Report: Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y., is doing several talk radio appearances Friday talking about the failed Immigration Bill but also specifically calling out democrat and former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C., for his plan to fight terrorism.
Citing an article in Friday's New York Sun, Giuliani called Edwards plan as the equivalent of having the Peace Corps fight terrorism.
"He's gonna restructure the military, which I guess means new uniforms, he's gonna rely on proven methods of intelligence gathering, which I imagine nobody else would rely on," said Giuliani on the Dennis Miller Radio Show today.
"He's gonna hold, catch this one, hold regular meetings with military leaders, I guess no president has ever done that before, I recall seeing lots of pictures of presidents holding meetings with military leaders. Then he is gonna form a Marshall Corps of 10,000 people and a Marshall Corps is gonna deal with issues ranging from poverty to economic development to clean drinking water," said Giuliani.
"We are not in a war, where the root cause of this war is poverty. Bin Laden comes from one of the richest families in the world," Giuliani added. "Mohamed Atta, who was the guy principally responsible for 9/11 was based in Germany and he was well educated. I don't think he was exactly drinking dirty water. And the reality is, is that they are coming at it from their liberal mindset of what must cause crime and they are not wrong about that. But terrorism is not caused by poverty. The Islamic terrorist movement, the root cause of it has to do with ideology and a perversion of religion, an idea that they are intolerant of the way we live. And to be a leader, if you lack clarity it is very very dangerous."
Edwards campaign spokesperson Mark Kornblau issued the following statement to ABC News.
"Sounds like Karl Rove is writing Rudy Giuliani's script these days -- all fear and no substance. If voters want four more years of George W. Bush's disastrous foreign policy, which has left us with more terrorists and fewer allies, then Giuliani is the guy. But if Americans want a smart, mission-focused approach to shutting down terrorists and keeping America safe, John Edwards is their next commander-in-chief," Kornblau's statement read.
On Giuliani's home turf, Edwards held a press conference in New York Thursday to lay out his plan to fight terrorism, which besides creating a Marshall Corp, also calls for holding regular meetings with top military leaders, rebuilding equipment and creating a national security budget.
When a reporter asked Edwards to respond to the recent criticisms by Giuliani, Edwards responded, "If Mayor Giuliani believes that what President Bush has done is good and wants to embrace it and run a campaign for the presidency saying I would give you four more years of what this president has given you he's allowed to do that. He'll never be elected president of the United States, but he's allowed to do that."

If I was Edwards, here's what I'd say to Rudy (the Bumper Sticker King) in response:
"Rudy - Osama Bin Laden may not have be drinking dirty water, but he's still out there free after killing over 3000 innocent Americans and you've been swallowing a lot of koolaid. The root cause of your denial in continuing to support President Bush's foreign policy is a clear reality. I don't need a primer on why they do it, I have a smart and mission-focused plan to be sure that they don't. My plan will work. Yours has already failed."

Giuliani understands that there is no negotiation or compromise that is possible with our enemy. Our enemy knocked down the twin towers, destroyed a chunk of the Pentagon, and had other ideas in mind for United 93...way before George Bush was president. These people hate the American way of life, and will either convert us "infidels" or kill us. How does Edwards plan to deal with that? How will the "Marshall Corps" keep us safe from Al Qaida's desire to destoy our nation? Folks, time to settle in and accept facts, this is a war that is gonna last until one culture beats the other culture into submission or obscurity. As for me, I love my tolerant and free country, and want to stay alive...I'll fight and support the war, until our survival is assured.

Correction: as I read my comment, what I meant to say was that Al Qaida had plans for 9/11 before George Bush was president and way before we ever toppled Saddam. Of course, George was president when this all happened...thank God is wasn't Gore!

The sad truth is that dictators like Saddam, don't tollerate competiton, and Al Quadea was next door all the time. Iraq was not America's enemy. Though a thug, who isn't in most parts of the third world. Had Saddam stayed Al-Queda would have remained in Afghanistan. That they attacked NY is fact, Iraq was out of it-literally. Saudi Arabia's dodgy bank accounts supported Bin Laden not Iraq. But you want your oil don't ya. Turning Iraq into rubble isn't exactly encouraging if that is the way the US brings democracy to dictatorships. Anyone remember the `Marshall Plan'? that might have helped. Seems the White House does not only have a short memory, it seems to be deficient in learning lessons from history as well. Rubbishing critics may look like democracy in action but the rest of us would rather go about our foreign policy with open minds - unclouded by simplistic sound-bite ideological vomitory hyperbole.
