ABC News' Jason Ryan Reports: Congressman William Jefferson, D-La., has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Alexandria.

The 16 count indictment has just been returned.

The charges include racketeering, solicitation of bribes, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, violating the foreign corrupt practices act, and conspiracy.  The indictment relates to an alleged bribery scheme for him and his family and his alleged bribery of a Nigerian official.

The indictment is 94 pages. If convicted on all charges Jefferson would be sentenced to 235 years in prison.

Jefferson has been under investigation for some time for accepting bribes in relation to help steer contracts to businesses in Nigeria.

FBI agents searched his home and congressional offices last year. FBI agents recovered $90,000 in cash from his home which was stored in a coffee can in his freezer.

Did he get to keep the money. I know if that had happen to me ole Joe average, It would have been confiscated by the law. I hope they indict him. Looks like a Nigerian scam just might get him. More than likely though, they'll say it is just a small amount of money and let him off the hook.

The sad thing is that the Dems were defending this man. Bet they won't be now though.

How are all these losers' getting into office? We need to clean all political offices and have everyone re apply for their job. And this time really dig deep into their lives before giving them a vote! And drop the wage to a normal wage and benefits. No big money! None of them are worth it.

I think the Democrats couldn't have distanced themselves more from Jefferson, why do the Bushbots think someone has defended him???

Smear by fear and innuendo is still a valid defense of Bush continued failures. Pity the blame game cannot see it's own house.

why should that surprise anyone...as far as him being re-elected, we can thank the city of New Orleans, they were also dumb enough to re elect Nagin

He and his lawyers will play the race card. Look for him to be re-elected in 2008, 2010, and on, and on....

Nigeria has been having more than its share of corruption at the highest levels, with many people suffering in poverty.

Anyone in our Government, Federal, State, Local including appointed and elected officials, DAs, ADAs, police, probation, should be given the harshest of sentences, and not allowed to plead out at a low level. They must pay and clean up there act before we can have our corporations, etc. operate with integrity and the best of ethics.

Interesting that this should come one day before Mr Libby gets his sentence. Must be pay back for sure. Lets face it, the State of Louisiana, is in need of a completed overhaul. NO needs an honest Mayor, the Gov is not running for re-election, which is the best thing that could happen to LA.

Bushbot ? How original. LOL

Mr. Jefferson should be relieved. Instead of 235 years in prison, he could be looking at a life sentence.

In April, (tax time) my sister sent the amount she owed the IRS, ($64.00) with her filing, mid May, the IRS sent her a notice that she owed $64.00 and she would need proof of payment, Copies of cancelled check, etc (less than a month later of her filing). Now I wonder how long it took our government officials to bring the greedy atrosity of Rep. Jefferson to light. I'm sure if my sister does not provide proof that she paid the $65.00 in a IRS timely fashion, they will charge her big time interest, and threats of liens and anything else they normally use against every day hard working folk to try and scare the hell out of us - why not use the same vengence to scare the hell out of our corrupt political officials?

I'm sure "Dollar Bill" will just claim he was the victim of a Nigerian e-mail scam.

cold hard cash I thought that meant hard earned. he'll spent 4years in club pen and return as a lobbyist. I do remember all his cronies coming to his side. where are they now?

Jesse and Rev. Al will be all over this one soon.

The'll probably bring Johnny Cochran back from the dead also.

Not everyone in New Orleans voted for Nagin or Jefferson. When some people are bused in to vote, you know what the outcome will be.

Weren't there quite a few clues about this man's dishonesty BEFORE the last election? How did he win re-election?? This is like Marion Barry all over again.
