Reid: Republicans putting political agenda first

ABC News' Suhas Subramanyam reports: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) accused Republicans of blocking bi-partisan legislation, like the controversial immigration bill backed by President Bush, for political reasons alone during the weekly Democratic radio address.

"Voting against a bill on a matter of principle is one thing," Reid said. "But Republican obstruction has gotten so bad that now they're blocking bills that they actually support."

Reid is asking Republicans to "put partisan politics aside and work with us for the American people" in order to pass legislation to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

Democrats on Capitol Hill will spend July working on a possible bill that might include timetables for withdrawal. President Bush has promised to veto any such bills, but he's facing mounting pressure from his own party on the issue. Earlier this week Republican Senators Richard Lugar (R-IN) and George Voinovich (R-OH) expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s strategy in Iraq.

"While a growing number of Republicans are saying the right things on Iraq, we'll soon find out
if they have the courage to vote the right way too," Reid said.

I can't see congress getting anything done untill Bush leaves office. He and the VP have entrenched themselves in the white house bunker, and it's doubtful if they will budge on any issue of concern to the public. Maybe this latest charge of contempt of congress on friday will start the move toward impeachment proceedings. The senate majority would need 16 republicans to join them in order to throw the bums out.

First, it was the American people who stopped the Immigration Bill and it was a matter of principle. Second, the Democrats have long played partisan politics by putting their political agenda first.

I like how Reid is basically saying "put partisan politics side" and vote for all my Democratic bills.

Can American people still depend on their goverment? They always say one thing and act another. No matter who become the president. It's always other people's fault. I say those illegal works are lucky that they are not American.

Reid has a point - why do Republicans continue to block legislation that they SUPPORT? It's because they're doing it out of spite, that's why. Ridiculous.

A couple of Republican Senators have come out publically and said that they will block all legislation in the coming session. Wasn't it just a few months ago that the Republicans was saying that the fillibuster was akin to treason. They are not saying that anymore.

Why is it that it is so hard to find an honest Republican? You may not like what Democrats stand for, but at least they aren't hypocrits.
