Clinton Says He'd Stump for Wife -- Even If They Weren't Married
July 13, 2007 4:26 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Former President Bill Clinton continued to stump for his wife, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Friday in the early voting state of New Hampshire, saying he would be there even if they were no longer married.
"I would be doing this if we were not married ... I believe she is the best prepared non-incumbent that I have ever had a chance to vote for in the United States," said the former president to a crowd of about 1000 people in Keene, New Hampshire.
Bill Clinton said something similar two weeks when he first began appearing alongside his wife on the campaign trail. "I would be here tonight if she asked me to if we were not married," Clinton told a crowd in Iowa on July 3rd.
Hillary Clinton told the crowd that people keep asking her what it's like campaigning with Bill. She said she's been doing it since 1974, so she was pretty used to it.
The Clinton's arrived about two hours late to their first campaign stop of the day. The former President blamed their tardiness on the Senate vote Friday that enabled the State Department to double the reward money for Osama bin Laden to $50-million dollars.
"The reason we are late today is not me or because of Hillary, it is because there was important vote today," he said.
During the senator's stump speech, Bill Clinton sat to her right on a stool positioned on the stage. The former president -- who was criticized earlier this month for looking bored during his wife's campaign speeches -- nodded, sat up straight, and applauded as she went through her speech.
The Clintons continue to campaign together Friday during two more stops in New Hampshire.
