Dodd Tries to Rock Iowa
July 06, 2007 9:39 AM
ABC News' Donna Hunter Reports: In an effort to boost his long-shot presidential campaign, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., has enlisted the help of Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who tours Western Iowa with the White House wannabe Friday, giving impromptu concerts to caucus voters.
Simon is joining Dodd's "River-to-River" bus tour of Iowa to help him lure more interest to his '08 bid. So far, Dodd's campaign stops in Iowa have been greeted with only a handful of supporters -- the biggest event brought out 75 people on Thursday.
Simon, who is a long-time friend of Dodd's, hopped aboard his tour bus this morning, lending his support and musical talents to a campaign that's been lagging in the name recognition department.
Their first stop was at a pancake breakfast at the Country Kitchen in Mason City, Iowa. The event drew in 125 people, making it the largest group the campaign has seen so far over the Fourth of July holiday in Iowa. The senator and the singer were greeted by half a dozen photographers and the local news crew that hasn't been to previous campaign events.
"The reason why I'm here for Chris is that he simply out did the other candidates. I'm being paid $1.7-million to do this," joked Simon.
Dodd thanked Simon for accompany his campaign and spoke proudly of the friendship they've shared for over 20 years.
It was a distinctly more intimate crowd than the one that gathered at Washington's Warner Theater on May 23 when Simon was awarded the Library of Congress' Gerwish Prize for Popular Song. That tribute, which included performances of Simon's music from the artist himself as well as Stevie Wonder, Lyle Lovett, James Taylor, Marc Anthony and others, drew a sold out crowd, paying from $150-750 per ticket.
Simon did not perform this morning for folks in Mason City but will later in the day when the campaign goes to Fort Dodge, Iowa and greets supporters at a high school in Sioux City, Iowa.

Paul Simon? Was that Fat Guy from Mountain busy or something? Dodd, please find some other tired, old, worn-out performer. Why don't you get the original cast of West Side Story to perform? Can you find more than a dozen Dodd supporters in any one place at the same time? It must be like a Bigfoot sighting...

Where are all the Dodd supporters to comment on this story? Why doesn't George S. have him on and tell him he "has no chance"?
