Dogfight: Michael Vick v. Robert Byrd
July 19, 2007 5:42 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports: Senate President Pro Tempore Robert Byrd is old and shaky, but he's still got the fire in his belly when he wants to call it up. That was on full display Thursday afternoon when this business of dog fighting drove the longest serving Senator to the Senate floor for a speech the likes of which other, younger senators might have liked to summon during the Iraq War debate this week.
He declared that he has seen one execution in his life -- a man put to death in the electric chair. "Its not a beautiful thing," he said. "I could say I could witness another one if it involves (long pause) this cruel, sadistic, cannibalistic, business of training these vulnerable creatures to kill."
Byrd outlines what happens in a dog fight, punctuating his speech with shouts of "SHAME! SHAME!" How inhuman! How dastardly!"
"God created the dog to be man's companion," Byrd cried.
"Two dogs are placed in a pit. placed in a pit. get that. and turned loose against each other. The fight can go on for hours," he declared. The fight can go on for hours. hear me? (whole body shaking). The fight can go on for hours!"
"Who are the real animals? Who are the real animals? The creatures inside the ring? Or the creatures outside the ring?"
"Barbaric. Barbaric! May god help those poor souls. Hear me."
Talking about why he loves dogs, Byrd said, "The mere petting of these social creatures can lower the blood pressure of humans."
Byrd said he is proud that people perpetrating dogfights "will have to answer to our judicial system. And may god help their souls."
Byrd has given impassioned homily's on Man's Best Friend before. In April of this year, he spent his time during a Senate hearing on the dog food recall talking about his Shih Tzu, Trouble, named by his late beloved wife Erma, who Byrd says said "here comes trouble" the first time she saw the dog coming.
Byrd calls the dog, which sleeps on his bed, Baby.

This Vick dogfighting scandal is going to be the worst thing that has ever hit football, image-wise. People aren't going to be able to get the sickening image out of their heads. It's going to bring the fundamental beastliness that's in many pro-football players up to the consciousness of the public. It's really an ugly image and it's not going to go away.

Dog fighting is bad. I believe i lost a dog once that I loved very much. I think dog fighters stole him for the fights. It makes me sad to think about it.

Hell is not hot enough for people who bring torture on animals!

This isn't a color issue, it is a right and wrong issue. If it were Payton Manning, Senator Byrd would have called for the same. By making this a racial issue, we are missing the point. A thug is a thug no matter race, color or creed.
If Vick is guilty he is accountable. If he is innocent so be it. No matter what, he allowed this to occur on his own property and last time I looked most people, normal citizens, are responsible for what happens on their property.
Just because Michael Vick is a superstar does not make him one to be admired. No matter what happens at this point, Robert Byrd has for the first time said something I agree with.

Michael Vick and other crap human beings are examples of just how worthless some people can be. The NFL needs to dump this major loser and the players on the Atlanta Falcons team need to stand up for what is right and refuse to play on the same field. Please let Michael Vick know that the backwoodsmen in Deliverance were not role models. Nonetheless, they are far more acceptable than Vick's disgusting lowlife example.

I've never been as proud of anyone as I was of Senator Robert Byrd when he spoke up against dog-fighting cases....
I wish we had someone here in Johnston Co NC, EPA, Fawn Patterson, NCAG and NCDA, to stand up for the dozens of animals that were murdered by a hunter putting out scraps laced with a pesticide called Terbufos. They didn't.
Some of these agencies knew who was doing the poisoning and told us. They also knew I was sick after holding the dog. 10 neighbors had a pet to be poisoned or found a wild animal poisoned.. Only one offered to help.
I also was in the hospital twice with symptoms of poisoning after holding my granddaughter's pet dog that died in my arms. We sent this dog to Rollin's Lab in Raleigh.. The results was Terbufos poisoning. I now have ILD.
EPA states that even a suspected case of human poisoning should be reported.
These poisoning cases were closed without being resolved. No one helped the dogs, no one helped my sister Bonnie and I..
I am past blaming the perpetrator. The ones that are paid to protect us..didn't.

Much as I agree with the highly esteemed Senator from Virginia----and really, how could one not?... that human pile of refuse that is Michael Vick will soon receive his pass from the network pooh-bahs and other corporate entities that see only one color (not black or white but green) at the end of the day. Sad... but true. Just watch.

I can already see the writing on the wall, this will be another "O.J." situation. This will divide the racially divide the country just like the OJ trial did. Which is so sad to me because it has nothing to with the color of his skin. He was trying to "keep it real", well hopefully he can do that in prison and after he's spent all of his money on high priced attorneys trying to get him off. The NFL over the past few years has gotten worse as far as their inability to see past the almighty dollar and continue to let thugs like Michael Vick play for them. I am so disgusted by dogfigting and I don't care who does it, sees it, bets on it or whatever. They are nothing but a bunch of redneck, hillbilly, thugs!
Michael Vick is so stinking rich, if he likes to gamble, he could have flown his own plane to Las Vegas!!! And as far as him not knowing what was going on at his property?, Please!!! Uhmmm, got 2 words for ya, Richard Scrushy!

For the first time in my life I agree with cranky old Sen. Byrd.
Mr. Vick is nothing more than a no-account thug. I will not purchase any product he endorses and call upon stand-up guys like Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan to ask Nike to stop this foolishness. Moreover, we are cancelling our NFL ticket on DirecTV, too.
Mr. Vick is not a good role model for our children and for the NFL. Shame on him, shame on his family, and shame on any person who validates his behavior.

I love Byrd for his passion. This is something that "should" bring everyone together. Black, white, rich, poor, liberal or conservative. We all love our defensless loyal pets. We should all hate what these low lives do to them.

While I completeley agree with the Senator regarding Vick's actions, I think he could look at his own Senate floor and the atrocities they have allowed to have been committed regarding human atrocities around the world....talk about Barbarick! May God help their souls.

Michael is now getting his just punishment for hurting defenseless animals only trying to please their human counterparts.
I just wish that the dogs that he chose to barbarically destroy could see this!
