Libby Sentence Commuted

Share

July 02, 2007 6:04 PM

ABC News' Jon Garcia, Jason Ryan and Theresa Cook Report:  Hours after an appeals court shot down a request to keep I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby out of prison pending the appeal of his conviction, President George W. Bush has commuted his sentence.

“I respect the jury’s verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive,” Bush’s statement said.  “Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.

I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby’s attorneys had asked a federal appeals court to keep Libby out of prison until the appeal of his conviction is resolved, stating that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald did not have the proper authority to bring the case against Libby, and that the judge in the case did not allow witnesses key to the defense to testify during the trial.

A federal jury found Libby guilty March 6 on charges that he lied to the FBI and a grand jury, and obstructed justice in the investigation into the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame, a former covert CIA operative.

U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton sentenced Libby to serve 30 months in prison and pay $250,000 in fines last month.

“He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect,” Bush’s statement noted.  “The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting.

A crook pardons another crook who got convicted by a jury of his peers for committing treason.

Posted by: Guy | Jul 2, 2007 6:12:27 PM

Good decision. Why put him in prison when drug dealers walk free?????

Posted by: jan | Jul 2, 2007 6:12:52 PM

NO SURPRISE CROOKS ALWAYS GREASE EACHOTHERS BACKSIDES.
so the law means what in america? apparently nothing.!!!

Posted by: alan | Jul 2, 2007 6:13:48 PM

Commuting Libby's sentence accomplishes the same thing as a pardon, keeping a crook out of jail. Impeach the crook in the White House for obstruction of justice!

Posted by: Guy | Jul 2, 2007 6:14:16 PM

Since there was NO CRIME involved, I think it was the right decision...

Posted by: Mike | Jul 2, 2007 6:15:14 PM

Bush has officially jumped the shark. I can't wait for his reign of terror to come to an end.

Posted by: DeJuan | Jul 2, 2007 6:15:17 PM

He is more guilty than Paris Hilton and should have to serve his sentence.

Posted by: peggy | Jul 2, 2007 6:16:01 PM

Bullcrap!! If this person wasn't of interested, would he get the full sentence?? I guess it's true, it's not what you know, but "Who" you know!!!

Posted by: Kristie | Jul 2, 2007 6:16:12 PM

It's about time. The poor man was a scapegoat and did nothing wrong. Shame on Bush for waiting so long.

Now it's time to get those two border guards out of prison, put there for doing their jobs.

Posted by: Alan Leslie | Jul 2, 2007 6:16:45 PM

Figures. Day by day I get more disgusted with Bush and his redtards. They're a lying bunch of criminal morons.

Posted by: Mark | Jul 2, 2007 6:17:31 PM

Since when is obstruction of justice not a crime? And why does Libby deserve special treatment? This is nothing more than corruption paid back with more corruption. Nice legacy.

Posted by: steve | Jul 2, 2007 6:17:37 PM

Can't the president still pardon Scooter Libby at the end of his term?

Posted by: John English, Torrance, CA | Jul 2, 2007 6:18:31 PM

Yeah, big surprise here...justice doesn't count when you play golf with the Skull'n'Bones clan. I figured they would wait until Bush was on his way out, but I guess they had to move when Scooter's appeal to stay out of jail was rejected. I'm quite sure Libby has enough dirt on Cheney to have him sent to Gitmo (until his sentence was commuted, too), so they had to do something to keep their scapegoat happy.

Posted by: jeremydbrooks | Jul 2, 2007 6:18:50 PM

BTW, he SHOULD have been pardoned. Bush only partly did the right thing. Libby won't spend time in proson, but his life is still ruined, and for nothing.

Posted by: Alan Leslie | Jul 2, 2007 6:19:04 PM

Its just another example of the "Bush-Cheeney Good 'ol Boys Network" where those in the circle are placed above the interest of the county and the American justice system. I didn’t think the President's credibility could get any lower. Boy was I wrong.

Posted by: Ken | Jul 2, 2007 6:20:16 PM

More obfuscation from the Shrub. The right-wing kookocracy will pay off Libby's fines and one of their non-"think-tanks" will soon have him on the payroll. The big Dick (Cheney) will then be on the phone once again asking him for his advice. Another case of special "justice" for special people.
Let the revolution begin!

Posted by: Political Animal | Jul 2, 2007 6:20:19 PM

Well, once again - this administration thumbs its nose at oversight, though this time it's not just at the legislative branch - this time at the courts. This "leak" originated in the White House. It is Cheney and Bush who should have been going to jail. Thus, there is no surprise that they have pardoned their messenger. It was political, and it is shameful. It seems that the law does not apply to those in high places in the Bush Administration. They are far above it. The law is thus made mockery. Equal Justice Under Law? Not here - no more. And, yet it continues - it makes me sick to my stomach.

Posted by: Frank | Jul 2, 2007 6:20:35 PM

Why are we shocked about this commutation of Libby's prison sentence. Dear Bush's Conscience bothered him, knowing that it should have been him and/or his vice president going to prison.....Americans, the Supreme Court, stacked by Daddy Bush, made the son, Bush President of the USA. The people didn't. Therefore, why are we surprised by the lack of scruples exhibited by the Son, Bush, who calls himself President of the USA?????

Posted by: Patricia Gossman | Jul 2, 2007 6:21:17 PM

Did you really expect anything different?

Posted by: JD | Jul 2, 2007 6:21:19 PM

This is the letter I wrote to the White House today:

To whom ever gets this e-mail,

I am neigther a Democrat or a Republican, but rather a citizen who votes for whoever I believe is the best candidate, and lately for the party that is least corrupt. Right now - that is not you - not the republican party. I am disappointed and disgusted by the pardon the president has given to Scooter Libby. I have nothing against Mr. Libby or either party, but the man was convicted of a perjury in a court of law - he broke the law.

But as has been the case to often in our government lately - loyalty to the president is put above what is best for the country - or in this case what is just.

I will vote Democrat in the next election because of this - and will encourage my entire family and all my friends to do so as well - not that I assume they are less corrupt than you - but you and the Republicans have now lost your turn in my eyes.

Good day

Posted by: Matt | Jul 2, 2007 6:21:46 PM

I'm from the UK. This is a disgrace. George Bush once again shows why he is globally detested. A man found guilty in a lawful court by his peers should not be pardoned. This obviously buys Libby's silence.

Posted by: Bob | Jul 2, 2007 6:21:55 PM

So much for the rule of law at least as it relates to Bush and Cheney. To hell with the constitution. These guys are political thugs who interpret the law based on how they feel. Gitmo, Iraq, Halliburton, Gonzales to name a few is why American need to take there vote more seriously.

Posted by: Dynamic D | Jul 2, 2007 6:21:59 PM

Have you checked the list of Clinton's pardons? At least this one had to do with governance, not direct money payments to private Swiss accounts...

Posted by: TB | Jul 2, 2007 6:22:02 PM

I wonder if I could get that kind of justice if I were convicted of a felony; I'll bet not. America has become one of the most sickening places in the World. It is time for the common man to kick out all these corrupt politicians; we know we will be on the right track when a farmer from Iowa that makes $25K per year is elected to the White House. Until then, it is BAU.

Posted by: J Aboumrad | Jul 2, 2007 6:22:13 PM

I remember Scooter as a young boy growing up in Miami. He was a weasel even then.

We all expected Bush to pardon him... it's no surprise. All I wish is that the Democrats had the spine, the backbone, the courage to impeach Bush for obvious crimes.

Posted by: Steve | Jul 2, 2007 6:22:23 PM

I LOVE YOU "W" !!! I love the way these libs are crying the blues.....HAHAHA You LIBS are the MORONS!!!!!!!!!! At least our GREAT president has not followed the lead of slick willie and all of the actual criminals he pardoned.....HaHaHa Bush/Cheney in '08

Posted by: Mike | Jul 2, 2007 6:23:04 PM

This is yet another reason the next president will be a democrat.

Lying to a grand jury is no longer a crime?

Posted by: thomasjackson | Jul 2, 2007 6:23:26 PM

All the punishments except for the prison sentence are in full effect. This was not a full pardon.

Posted by: TB | Jul 2, 2007 6:23:54 PM

It's official. Bush is now worse than Nixon.

Posted by: Pete | Jul 2, 2007 6:24:25 PM

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.

Posted by: kevin | Jul 2, 2007 6:24:34 PM

This just shows there is one law for the Bushies and another law for regular people. At least we know that as more information about things the administration has done that are illegal, no one will get punished.

Posted by: Stacy | Jul 2, 2007 6:25:04 PM

President Clinton was convicted of the exact same thing, which was why he was Impeached. He did not loose his job. This action is the direct result.

Posted by: TB | Jul 2, 2007 6:25:20 PM

It is the RIGHT thing to do - Libbt was railroaded by a biased jury and bent prosecuter - Liberals lose again!

Posted by: The Admiral | Jul 2, 2007 6:25:53 PM

Yes, the option of a pardon is still available to the president.

Now that Libby is a felon he cannot work as an attorney. But he can become a Lobbyist and a speaker earning the really big money from the Republican cabal.

Worst.President.Ever.

Posted by: PatL | Jul 2, 2007 6:26:13 PM

I voted for George twice. Sometimes I like what he does, others I don't. I like his supreme court nominees and their decisions, but I hate his amnesty program for illegal aliens. I like the way he's kept us safe since 9/11, but I hate the way he keeps us spending like Democrats are in charge (before they returned to power). I like that he let Libby off the hook, because he was going to be in jail for BS/political reasons in the first place. I wish George would stand up to the Dems like this on all issues, he'd be popular again.

Posted by: sphynxy | Jul 2, 2007 6:26:27 PM

Ok America1 Wake up for the 08 elections. This administration and everyone in it, is above the law. Name the category and it has been violated right under your nose. This is very disturbing right from the lies to get us into war and the civil liberties that have been violated without our knowledge. I am a Democrat and am not to happy about their progress, but the oversight hearings and the under handed meetings that have taken place by administration officials is remarkable. Whether it is dimwit Cheney and him not a part of any of the branches of our government or the dimwit Gonzales with the AG's office, this is almost unbearable to say that I live in a the best country in the world. I do not know how much more the American public can take, but it would be in your best interest to go to the polls and make a hopefully better change in our politics. I would like to criticize the Democrats as well for not stopping the war and other things. You have to keep in mind that investigations are for everyone's benefit against both parties. High gas prices, pardon's Etc. Where and when does it end?

Posted by: Ted Lipniarski | Jul 2, 2007 6:28:25 PM

Bush has to go..

Posted by: Jim | Jul 2, 2007 6:28:27 PM

How can you commute a sentence of a man who does NOT plead guilty? Libby has acted as an INNOCENT man from day one. Is this just another BUSH justice systems as coached by Gonzales? Justice by political party. If i ever LIE to a prosecutor can i claim that is ok per the President Bush Doctrine?

Posted by: Kurt W Sorenson | Jul 2, 2007 6:29:36 PM

Chaney made him do it to cover his own backside - also Karl Rove's. If Libby were still facing 30 months in the slammer, he might rat on them.

Posted by: Bob Connor | Jul 2, 2007 6:30:42 PM

The President has done what should be done. A distracting and rediculous case will soon be gone from the headlines and the President's detractors can now get busy trying to impeach him for exercising the powers he enjoys as the President. When will the elected few in Washington get busy and pass some of the legislation we sent them there for instead of motivating legal wrangles intended to embarrass or discredit each other?

Posted by: Wayne | Jul 2, 2007 6:30:44 PM

Immidiate impeachment proceedings should be started againest the President for commuting a sentence before it has even begun. This is such a slap in the face of our judicial system, but what do expect from such a man and his Vice-President.

Posted by: Kevin Mason | Jul 2, 2007 6:31:38 PM

WHAT HAPPENED TO AMERICAS SPINE? these over indulged frat boys are your leaders?? skull and bones??

the judges that denied the appeal two of the three were appointed by the first bush and by reagan.

and of course at the end of this term bush will pardon libby so he doesnt have to pay the fine.

it will be really hard to find any intelligence agent willing to work under the conditions this country offers --complete unordered chaos.

Posted by: alan | Jul 2, 2007 6:31:51 PM

Wow !

Is it me or does everyone else also think that we would have much better luck with having Bill and Ted and their Excellent Adventure running this country ?

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K White House...

This just gets better and better...

I can't wait to see what happens the rest of this week !!!

The rate things are going...

What happened to the America that we all grew up loving and admiring ???

Seems to me that our government has forgotten that instead of ruling over it's people, that it is there to be ruled by the people, for the people, and from the people.

Posted by: Todd | Jul 2, 2007 6:32:18 PM

Mike: so, you're pretty sure he won't pardon anyone when he leaves office? You'd be a sucker to take that bet. Clinton, Bush, they are all corrupt (that's the modern definition of politics), but Bush has done more damage in under 8 years then a room full of drunken monkeys with veto pens and war powers could have done in a drunken monkey's lifetime.

Posted by: jeremydbrooks | Jul 2, 2007 6:32:24 PM

Libby is guilty as sin. Neither George Bush nor Dick Cheney would flinch from sending another to jail in their place. After all, they both opted to send others to war in their places. But they both also know that after a while in the cooler to think about it, Libby is likely to become much more forthright about things he saw and heard in the white house.

And the Pres and the Veep can't afford that. They know that Libby is in possession of ample evidence to convict them both.

Posted by: Jim | Jul 2, 2007 6:33:18 PM

How low can he go? His poll numbers are under 30% and he's got another 567 days to continue screwing this country up. The only thing I find enjoyable about this administration is watching his poll numbers sink ever lower. Other than that, it's been a tragedy. A real tragedy.

Posted by: Eric | Jul 2, 2007 6:33:25 PM

My God! You libs are so fogetful. What about the pardons for sale in the Clinton Administration? Secrets for sale to the Chi Coms? The list just goes on. Bush has dedicated his Presidency to cleaning up the National Security mess Clinton left behind and all he gets is grief.

Posted by: Paul | Jul 2, 2007 6:33:35 PM

Why do I think Bush and Cheney were worried that Scooter would write a book?

Posted by: John Fisher | Jul 2, 2007 6:33:41 PM

It's the Clinton Doctrine. Doesn't anyone have a memory? President Clinton was Impeached because he lied under oath, and he got away with it. Sure, it happened a few years ago, but you can use Google to look these things up.

Posted by: TB | Jul 2, 2007 6:34:40 PM

What is wrong with this President? Libbey was found guilty and yet George W Bush commutes his sentence! This was a serious crime as the judge regarded this punishment. There exists 2 different kinds of justice according to Bush by his actions. I am appalled and disgusted by yet another stupid decision.

He mocks the Founding Fathers, the truly great Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, and the rest of the republican party. Don't they realize they may never recover? Are they all so Hell bent to bring on Armageddon they can't see they WILL be held responsible by ANY God even their own. Good luck, gentlemen, you are going to need it.

Posted by: David Winchester | Jul 2, 2007 6:35:57 PM

Scooter Libby was hardly tried by a jury of his peers if the jury came from Washington, DC where 90% of resident s are Democrats. This is another case of those out to get George W. Bush. I ma hardly in his fan club, but ig Scooter Libby should go to jail for lying, then Bill Clinton should have gone to jail for lying. Hold a trial for Clinton in South Carolina and you'd get teh same results Libby got in DC.

Posted by: Todd Morris | Jul 2, 2007 6:36:06 PM

This precedent of committing perjury under oath and not serving jail time was something that Bill Clinton imitated. “I did not have s_x with that woman”. All politicians, in both parties, think they can get away with anything. It time for the American public to vote out the incumbents and send a message to DC.

Posted by: Mark | Jul 2, 2007 6:36:53 PM

Will somebody please explain to me why the President of the United States who swore twice to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States of America and to faithfully execute the duties of the office into which he was about to enter, which includes (but are not limited to) faithfully executing the laws of the United States, has not with this act, finally committed an impeachable offense?

Posted by: R. J. Stohler | Jul 2, 2007 6:37:10 PM

Hey, there were a lot of crooks in bubba Clintons administration that got away with a lot more than that!

Posted by: Joey | Jul 2, 2007 6:37:23 PM

Mr Libby was convicted for obstruction of justice, and his sentence has been commuted by the president. The big question that remains is, who is the person that disclosed the identity of a law enforcement officer of the United States?

Posted by: wmd5 | Jul 2, 2007 6:37:51 PM

and bush wonders wht we do not trust him????

Posted by: s | Jul 2, 2007 6:37:59 PM

What's the surprise here? The Bush/Cheney gang have always maintained that they are above the law. This is just another example of such.

Posted by: Tom | Jul 2, 2007 6:38:57 PM

I'm British and let me start by saying I am very aware that we do not have an ideal system. A real life queen is our head of state after all, and it's 2007!

But if a British prime minister were to commute the sentence of one his administration's closest aides, he would he hounded out of office.

I know, I know - it's different in the US. The president is the head of state and has the power to commute. Our prime minister is not, and does not. But that's kind of the point - Bush can only do this because he has that power, and he is abusing that power. It is simply unthinkable in most modern democracies for this kind of corruption to take place. It's disgusting, and it was very fitting that Bush spent the weekend with President Putin of Russia. The two men have a lot in common when it comes to leading from the gutter, putting cronyism before justice, personal interest before national pride.

Posted by: Robin Meltzer | Jul 2, 2007 6:39:16 PM

One more act of Republican cronies doing what they do best, lie, steal, cheat and blame it on everyone else.
Bush & Chaney and their buddies are what the saying power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Talk about a get out of jail card free !
I still hope everyone see's this as a pay off, cause what else could it be ? If it were you or me we would not get a ghost of a chance at having the sentence commuted. Totally BS !

Posted by: Clayton E. Betzing | Jul 2, 2007 6:39:41 PM

Bush now thinks he's prosecutor, judge, and jury. We all better watch out or he is going to rewrite the constitution without us. Can he just override everybody? That's not the way I learned American Government! Somebody soon better look into how much he really is controling!

Posted by: JulietteCDM | Jul 2, 2007 6:39:45 PM

I can't believe so that many people continue to support this idiot president! Even if you are a die hard republician, this guy has done more to harm our country then any president in history. I for one, can't wait for his term to end. God bless and help America!

Posted by: Maryellen | Jul 2, 2007 6:39:53 PM

This is just another example of the President and Vice Presidents disregard for the Judicial system. They consider themselves above the Law and they have the power to ignore the other branches of the government wether it be the senate or congress or for the that matter, the american people. He keeps on saying that he is doing what's best for us, while he ignores our opinions and our voices. "Way to go King George"!!!

Posted by: Robert Turner Jr. | Jul 2, 2007 6:40:47 PM

So the president commutes Libbey sentence. I wonder how much corrupt will this administration get.

Posted by: h | Jul 2, 2007 6:41:15 PM

Blah Blah Blah. Everyone keeps whining about the rule of law and the lack of justice. Read your constitution folks. Presidental pardon is a specifically enumerated power of the executive branch. So what he did was within the rule of law, the supreme law of the land for that matter. He is neither the first nor the last president to pardon a convicted felon. For all you liberals complaing about republican corruption take a look at all the pardons Clinton made before he left office. http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pardonchartlst.htm

Posted by: Lou | Jul 2, 2007 6:41:26 PM

Posted by: Anon | Jul 2, 2007 6:42:16 PM

Charlie - good letter to the white house. I've sent a similar one as well. Bush has made a mockery of the U.S. constitution and our legal system. Shame on anyone who supports Bush-Cheney - torturers-in-chief!
These supporters will be remembered in the same way as the people who supported Hitler during his ascent to power!

Posted by: Anuj Varma | Jul 2, 2007 6:42:26 PM

did not Lil Kim and Martha Stewart go to jail for lying? The difference between Clinton and Libby is 70% of the people were against him being taken out of office (it is a politcal action, not legal). But 12 people who should count said Libby should go to jail. One man who does not care what the people say, said he should not.

Posted by: lpozdol | Jul 2, 2007 6:44:47 PM

Does this pardon included Cheney? Regardless, Bush poll numbers will not get any better until his very last day in office.

Posted by: Gregg | Jul 2, 2007 6:45:14 PM

Anyone who says that no crime was committed has no concept of the issue except for how to make a post on this website. The man leaked the name of an undercover CIA agent to the media in an act of political treason. He should share a cell with whoever gave him the OK for the leak.

Posted by: Doc Sean | Jul 2, 2007 6:45:47 PM

I'm tired of Bush and his administration over/riding what other branches and/or systems of government are set up to do. The justice system did its job, found a man guilty, and gave him a sentence. He therefore, should have served that sentence. No one else has the right to determine if he was guilty or innocent. This President's term can't end too soon. He has done so much damage to our Country (here and abroad), that it will take quite some time to turn things around. This is just another example of President Bush's ego getting in the way - I don't know how he looks at himself in the mirror everyday. This was a poor decision.

Posted by: Patty Millspaugh | Jul 2, 2007 6:47:15 PM

What is the point in having a judicial system comprised of judges and juries if King George can dismiss a conviction? Frankly, I think the only reason he hasn't been impeached yet is because Cheney is next in line and that is probably the worst of these two evils.

Posted by: Cat | Jul 2, 2007 6:47:48 PM

It seems funny that Martha Stewart gets jail time for lying about some stock stuff but Libby lies about something that could of gotten people killed and he gets nothing. It just shows it's not what you do but who you know, especially if that person is a friend of the president. It just proves that there is a double standard in this country.

The Republicans will defend Mr. Bush's actions with the usual Bill Clinton references-pardons during the last days of his presidency, lies about having sex with Monica and so forth. This comes down to two issues: 1. Libby did what he did to protect this administration and was promised he'd do no time should it lead to his being convicted 2. and that this administration feels no conpunction what-so-ever to follow the rule of law if it impedes there agenda or promises to their cronies.

Water boarding is acceptable for prisoners and commuting the "excessive" sentence of a former employee found guilty by a jury of his peers is Presidential?

At least we know the President keeps some of his promises.

The best part about this is hearing all of you socialists, um, er, I mean "Democrats" whine about Bush. Do you have the Revolutionary War blamed on Haliburton yet? A day without all of you socialists, (darn it), I mean "Democrats" whining is a day without sunshine! :-) Keep up the good work.

P.S. - Hey Libs...CAN YOU HEAR THE ROAR OF OUR LAUGHTER??? :-)

Why is anyone surprised that Bush would commute the sentence of his buddy? None of them are going to be "men" enough to pay for their crimes. The only good to come out of Bush's commutation is that the Democratic party is looking better and better to a whole lot a of people - especially Republicans!
