Libby Sentence Commuted

ABC News' Jon Garcia, Jason Ryan and Theresa Cook Report:  Hours after an appeals court shot down a request to keep I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby out of prison pending the appeal of his conviction, President George W. Bush has commuted his sentence.

“I respect the jury’s verdict. But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive,” Bush’s statement said.  “Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison.

I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby’s attorneys had asked a federal appeals court to keep Libby out of prison until the appeal of his conviction is resolved, stating that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald did not have the proper authority to bring the case against Libby, and that the judge in the case did not allow witnesses key to the defense to testify during the trial.

A federal jury found Libby guilty March 6 on charges that he lied to the FBI and a grand jury, and obstructed justice in the investigation into the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame, a former covert CIA operative.

U.S. District Court Judge Reggie Walton sentenced Libby to serve 30 months in prison and pay $250,000 in fines last month.

“He will remain on probation. The significant fines imposed by the judge will remain in effect,” Bush’s statement noted.  “The consequences of his felony conviction on his former life as a lawyer, public servant, and private citizen will be long-lasting.

I'm from the UK. This is a disgrace. George Bush once again shows why he is globally detested. A man found guilty in a lawful court by his peers should not be pardoned. This obviously buys Libby's silence.

So much for the rule of law at least as it relates to Bush and Cheney. To hell with the constitution. These guys are political thugs who interpret the law based on how they feel. Gitmo, Iraq, Halliburton, Gonzales to name a few is why American need to take there vote more seriously.

Have you checked the list of Clinton's pardons? At least this one had to do with governance, not direct money payments to private Swiss accounts...

I wonder if I could get that kind of justice if I were convicted of a felony; I'll bet not. America has become one of the most sickening places in the World. It is time for the common man to kick out all these corrupt politicians; we know we will be on the right track when a farmer from Iowa that makes $25K per year is elected to the White House. Until then, it is BAU.

I remember Scooter as a young boy growing up in Miami. He was a weasel even then.

We all expected Bush to pardon him... it's no surprise. All I wish is that the Democrats had the spine, the backbone, the courage to impeach Bush for obvious crimes.

I LOVE YOU "W" !!! I love the way these libs are crying the blues.....HAHAHA You LIBS are the MORONS!!!!!!!!!! At least our GREAT president has not followed the lead of slick willie and all of the actual criminals he pardoned.....HaHaHa Bush/Cheney in '08

This is yet another reason the next president will be a democrat.

Lying to a grand jury is no longer a crime?

All the punishments except for the prison sentence are in full effect. This was not a full pardon.

Posted by: TB | Jul 2, 2007 6:23:54 PM

It's official. Bush is now worse than Nixon.

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.

This just shows there is one law for the Bushies and another law for regular people. At least we know that as more information about things the administration has done that are illegal, no one will get punished.

President Clinton was convicted of the exact same thing, which was why he was Impeached. He did not loose his job. This action is the direct result.

It is the RIGHT thing to do - Libbt was railroaded by a biased jury and bent prosecuter - Liberals lose again!

Yes, the option of a pardon is still available to the president.

Now that Libby is a felon he cannot work as an attorney. But he can become a Lobbyist and a speaker earning the really big money from the Republican cabal.

I voted for George twice. Sometimes I like what he does, others I don't. I like his supreme court nominees and their decisions, but I hate his amnesty program for illegal aliens. I like the way he's kept us safe since 9/11, but I hate the way he keeps us spending like Democrats are in charge (before they returned to power). I like that he let Libby off the hook, because he was going to be in jail for BS/political reasons in the first place. I wish George would stand up to the Dems like this on all issues, he'd be popular again.

Ok America1 Wake up for the 08 elections. This administration and everyone in it, is above the law. Name the category and it has been violated right under your nose. This is very disturbing right from the lies to get us into war and the civil liberties that have been violated without our knowledge. I am a Democrat and am not to happy about their progress, but the oversight hearings and the under handed meetings that have taken place by administration officials is remarkable. Whether it is dimwit Cheney and him not a part of any of the branches of our government or the dimwit Gonzales with the AG's office, this is almost unbearable to say that I live in a the best country in the world. I do not know how much more the American public can take, but it would be in your best interest to go to the polls and make a hopefully better change in our politics. I would like to criticize the Democrats as well for not stopping the war and other things. You have to keep in mind that investigations are for everyone's benefit against both parties. High gas prices, pardon's Etc. Where and when does it end?

Bush has to go..

Posted by: Jim | Jul 2, 2007 6:28:27 PM

How can you commute a sentence of a man who does NOT plead guilty? Libby has acted as an INNOCENT man from day one. Is this just another BUSH justice systems as coached by Gonzales? Justice by political party. If i ever LIE to a prosecutor can i claim that is ok per the President Bush Doctrine?
