McCain Optimistic on Chances in New Hampshire
July 14, 2007 12:33 PM
ABC News' Bret Hovell reports: At a town hall meeting Saturday in Claremont, NH, Senator John McCain brushed aside concerns about the rocky time his campaign has had in the last few weeks and sounded an optimistic tone when he was asked about his troubles.
"I've had tough times in my life," McCain said, alluding to the five and one half years he spent in as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. "This is a day at the beach compared to some others."
"I can win in New Hampshire as I did in 2000..." McCain said. "I'm not a very good fundraiser, but I can out-campaign any of these guys."
McCain, R-AZ, barnstormed in New Hampshire this weekend, his first such trip since his campaign announced he had only $2 million in the bank to fund his flagging presidential bid-far below his chief rivals for the Republican nomination.
The town hall meeting was a wide-ranging and lengthy conversation with approximately 150 New Hampshire voters. McCain took questions from the audience for nearly an hour on topics ranging from the Iraq war to immigration and border security to health care.
"I think [health care] should be the number one domestic issue in this upcoming campaign," he said.
McCain was also asked if Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was capable of forging a political solution to the problems in his country.
"I don't know and we'll find out," McCain, who just returned from a trip to Iraq, said. He said he was "disappointed" in the progress so far.
McCain was generally warmly received by the crowd. Ann MacLaughlin of Claremont, NH, said she went into the meeting unsure about McCain, but came out impressed.
"I feel better about him. I think he did a good job of trying to answer honestly all the questions..." MacLaughlin said. "He changed my mind a little."

Well, he wanted to be like Bush. Maybe he should hold off on the victory tour.
