Romney Brings in $14 Million
July 03, 2007 2:54 PM
ABC News' Rick Klein reports: Former governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass., has reported bringing in $14 million in new donations to his campaign in the second quarter, but boosted that figure to $20.5 million by loaning his campaign an additional $6.5 million.
That haul puts Romney ahead of Sen. John McCain's fund-raising pace, though not by much. The McCain campaign announced Monday that the Arizona Republican brought in $11.2 million in the second quarter, a total that was so disappointing that he immediately announced a round of staff layoffs and other cost reductions.
Romney, however, is able to avoid McCain's fate by supplementing his fund-raising total with his personal wealth. He's now pumped nearly $9 million of his own money into his presidential bid; without those loans, he would have only $3 million cash on hand (McCain has only $2 million in the bank), instead of the $12 million his campaign is reporting as its current balance.
Romney's second-quarter numbers are a significant drop-off from $21 million he raised in the first quarter of 2007, and are the latest evidence that all Republican candidates are struggling to raise cash.
The top two Democratic candidates -- Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton -- announced raising $32.5 million and $27 million, respectively, in the second quarter, though they only collected $31 million and $21 million for use in their primary campaigns.

And how much did Ron Paul raise in the last quarter? My guess is a little over $3 million, with $2,000,000 cash on hand and all of it supplied by supporters - not his personal fortune. Factor in Ron Paul's low "burn rate": He only spent about 20% of his cash last quarter. The other Republicans had burn rates of 50% or more. Ron Paul can make his money go twice as far as any other candidate, and has the resources to make it to the "first tier".

Too much has been made about Romney's religious beliefs and/or affiliation. People forget that it's not what goes into a person that counts but what comes out. The great thing about this country is that anybody can run for political office because, what matters in the long run, is what they do, not what they believe.
Ironically, it's on this basis that Romney loses my vote. I looked at the answers he gave - while running for governor of Massachusetts and then the answers he gave once he was firmly in office. To me, it's clear that Romney will say whatever he has to to get elected but once in office, all bets are off. That, to me, is a lot scarier than where he bows his head on Sunday mornings.
