Romney on 'Frontrunner' Memo: ‘I Value People Who Exaggerate on My Behalf'
July 22, 2007 11:02 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Mitt Romney disagreed Sunday with his senior strategist’s assessment that he is the new frontrunner in the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
"No, I’m far from the frontrunner at this point," said Romney when asked if he considers himself the frontrunner. "I value people who exaggerate on my behalf but unfortunately there are a couple of guys who are pretty strong out there. I’m still an underdog and battling hard."
The July 20 memo, which was written by Romney strategist Alex Gage, was published in Sunday's Washington Post
. Gage argues that Romney, not former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, is the true frontrunner in the crowded GOP field.
Giuliani "is now trailing in four of the five key states that fall before Feb. 5," writes Gage. The memo goes on to note that the average of public polls conducted in June and July show Romney leading comfortably in Iowa and New Hampshire and more narrowly in Nevada. Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., leads the way in South Carolina, while Giuliani is a strong first choice only in Florida.
Romney made his comments to reporters after speaking to the Republican National Hispanic Assembly in Washington, D.C.

As much as Romney doesn't want to be the front runner right now- HE IS!!!

I grew-up in A Mormon family in Utah that goes back to when Mormons didn't much care if they were though of as being mainstream Christians. My grandfather knew the Romney's when they were Mormon Polygamists in Mexico. Once, Mormons stood for values. Don't let Mitt make you think that all people who have a Mormon heritage will lie to get ahead. Watching Salt Lake sell it's soul for the Winter Games, I witnessed people who placed winning above all else.

Micah...lol....tumbleweedin..I think there's probably a reason that online polls say "this is not a scientific poll"

"I value people who exaggerate on my behalf"
I guess this kind of sums up why I dislike Mitt Romney so much. It doesn't matter what his beliefs are. He will say anything to anyone to get elected and he values those who do.
Haven't we had enough with Republican liars and opportunists ruining our country? Isn't America worth defending from the likes of them?

It is amazing that it is money, not inate popularity or message that determines front runner status. I wonder if Romney can keep propping up his campaign with his own funds for the next year.

I strongly support anybody who can increase the education of the hordes of Americans who develop opinions based on mindless dribble. There is readable documentation on the super-human correction Romney built out of the Olympic mess created by a handful of selfish people. I hope he gets a chance to correct the mess that has been made of our country by uninformed opinions.

There is a difference between solving a serious problem, and exagerating the original problem.
Just because Mitt Rmoney says that the problem was bad and says that he fixed it, doesn;t mean that the problem was bad, or that he fixed it. From what I hear, the Olympics were worse off after he left his mark, than before he arrived.
If what one wants is fluff then go ahead and vote for this guy. I, for one, care enough about my country to stay informed and vote for someone not part of the moral abyss that is the Republican party.

Mitt will get a boost when big Fred quits the race this Saturday after a mediocre showing in S.C. If he doesn't outright endorse Mitt, at least many of his voters will back Mitt to assure victory in Florida

The most prudent thing to do is to do your investigation completely.
