Ron Paul Tops McCain in Cash on Hand
July 06, 2007 1:14 PM
ABC News' George Stephanopoulos Reports: Though often regarded as a longshot candidate for president, Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank.
In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on "This Week," Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain's.
"I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we're on the up-slope," said Paul.
Paul's cash on hand puts him in third place in the Republican field in that important metric, although he is well behind leader Rudy Giuliani, who has $18 million in the bank, and Mitt Romney, with $12 million.
Paul, who polls show with support in the low single digits, said his surprisingly strong fundraising is the best measure of his support.
"I think people have underestimated the number of people in this country who are interested in a freedom message," says the Republican congressman from Texas, who has strong libertarian leanings.

Good for you, Dr. Paul. I have a feeling we'll be seeing him move up a little higher on that ladder-and in the polls, too. It's early in the race, plenty of time for change. The rest of the candidates are the same as Bush and they follow him in whatever he does.
Posted by: Cat | Jul 6, 2007 1:30:39 PM
Its great to hear that Dr. Paul has been able to continue his campaigns growth. I also am pleased that ABC will give him some broadcast TV time. I do disagree about the single digit polling numbers, even ABC's own poll after the 1st debate was removed when Ron Paul had the lead.
Posted by: Damon Talbot | Jul 6, 2007 1:34:45 PM
Paul's supporters who are willing to hit the streets for him are worth more than McCains and Giuliani's millions combined.
The Revolution has begun.

That is great news. Thank you for reporting on this ABC News. He is most definitely on the upslope. The Iowa rally was electric!
Posted by: JoshLowry | Jul 6, 2007 1:36:58 PM
Good thing he was excluded from the June 30th Iowas forum, even though he met all the requirements of a declared candidate - and has more money than McCain. The GOP is terrified that an antiwar libertarian is more popular than a conservative governor like Huckabee!
Posted by: Sam Gattis | Jul 6, 2007 1:37:53 PM
Excellent news!
Ron Paul can put this money to use effectively, since he doesn't spend like the corporate candidates do. Those guys have to HIRE people to promote them. Ron Paul simply INSPIRES people to promote him.
The Liberty Express rolls on...

I wonder what the real total is once you factor in all the money the Meetup groups are spending and all the money people are doing individually.
Posted by: wbbgjr | Jul 6, 2007 1:43:46 PM
I don't know about you guys, but this is so encouraging that I'm going to double my efforts and monetary support for Ron Paul.

70% of Americans want us out of Iraq and want change.
Ron Paul is only republican candidate against the war.
Ron Paul only needs about 30% vote from republicans sick of the war and abuse of powers to win in republican primaries.
Ron Paul will win.
Posted by: Silence Dogood | Jul 6, 2007 1:46:25 PM
Dr. Poll won most of the Republican debates, ABC, CNN, MSNBC but no one every knew, they were quietly hushed. Go, Dr. Paul!

Alright! Now we have to work on beating that next quarter!!!
Thanks to ABC for daring to speak the name of Ron Paul.

I am 60 years old. I have always voted for smaller government and to uphold the Constitution. I have never gotten what I voted for. Today I put my home up for sale. I am taking the proceeds and going to spend it promoting Ron Paul. That is the best way to spend my grandchildrens inheritance. They will benefit more by having President Ron Paul than having $100,000 of fiat money. Our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor. The Revolution has begun.
Posted by: Freedom Fighter | Jul 6, 2007 1:55:04 PM
I'll definitely be donating more to his campaign too. To me, Ron Paul represents what America is supposed to be. A great democracy and a great beacon of liberty.

Posted by: Steven Pillo | Jul 6, 2007 1:59:31 PM
LOL! Ron Paul has more cash on hand then John McCain.
And almost more than Mitt Romney if he didn't donate his own money to his campaign.
The establishment better watch out, Ron Paul is a top tier candidate now.
The Revolution is coming.

Ron Paul is the only candidate out of both the republicans and democrats who is not backed by the special interest groups that are destroying this nation. He is the only one with a DIFFERENT platform, one that will restore the U.S.A back to its ideal. We live in a dangerous time due to people like Bush and a congress that could care less about the country and more about their own coffers. LONG LIVE THE RON PAUL REVOLUTION!!!
Posted by: William Wallace | Jul 6, 2007 2:02:26 PM
Just checked Fox news to see if this was reported. Not a chance! Thank you ABC for getting this man's name out. Since our country allows the mainstream media to determine elections, I'm happy you're helping to make it a fair race.

Yes! The cash on hand does not include the 10s of thousands of unpaid volunteers, donated posters, flyers, buttons, wrist bands, banners, etc that are appearing across America.
Look for a wave of support to hit Des Moines, Iowa on August 5, 2007 for the 4th debate. I'll be there if I have to hitch from NC!! Rp will do more of the same...TRUTH in POLITICS.
Looking forward to an excellent interview by one of the best (GS).

Thank you ABC for reporting this. You have to understand that there is a growing concern of many people that the Ministry of Truth is not being objective in their reporting and are turning to alternative sources for their news. When the Truth is outed, which corporate news organization will be the one who will be trusted in the future as having been upstanding. Business-wise, and long-term, it's the smartest descision to stick to stick to the Truth and objectivity.

I think that people have underestimated the value of the Daily Show/Colbert Report/Real Time circut. Ron Paul has made several appearances on all of them and has presented himself very well and with good humor which counts for a lot with voters...it makes him "Real" as opposed to seeming manufactured or canned...It is also great free advertising...Americans are smart people and tend to reguard these rightly or wrongly as "Smart" shows which I think translates to his campaign to some degree. The audience may not be his uasual constituency but thir votes count just the same
Posted by: Dragoon21b | Jul 6, 2007 2:09:55 PM
Looks like the people are beginning to express their dissatisfaction with both parties, by taking more direct looks at the so called "dark-horses". I am strongly in favor of looking at better potential candidates, then those the parties would typically put forth, from either party.
Posted by: Rick McDaniel | Jul 6, 2007 2:10:14 PM
Ron Paul is gaining support left and right. People are tired of all the wasteful spending and lives lost overseas for NO reason at this point. Ron Paul has my FULL support...its a shame he doesn't get much coverage....he sells himself
Posted by: Jimmy | Jul 6, 2007 2:10:24 PM
Yeah, thank you ABC for putting a good story out there. I'm a dem, but I'm thrilled to see pubs supporting Paul, a decent man. It gives me a little respect and hope for the pubs that they can choose good people to run their party. I may vote for Paul if he runs against Hill. Keep up the good work, Ron Paul supporters, and bring some credibility back to your party!
Posted by: Cat | Jul 6, 2007 2:11:16 PM
This is just the beginning. Ron Paul's message of hope for America, of Freedom, of Patriotism and Pride in our Constitution and Democracy is resonating and will continue to resonate.
The big news channels like to avoid him. Maybe they think hes too good to be true. But he has inspired so many people to take up the message of freedom and small government. Of Controlling our own future, and not letting special-interest chumps like the corporate-funded 'toptier' continue to ruin our country for their own political gain.
There are so many instances of Ron Paul activism in all 50 states, why won't anyone cover that? Like someone else said, The other politicians have to PAY people to support them, the thousands of Ron Paul supporters in this country are INSPIRED to support him. Now thats what I call a big story.

Who would have thought that a politician who actually has respect for the US Constitution would get support? This is unbelievable. Now, watch for the mother of all attacks that will be coming toward Congressman Paul. There is a lot at stake for so many industries and special interest groups that receive subsidies from our federal government.

I agree that his support in the media polls will soon increase, but I doubt the media/nightly news polls will ever measure the true depth of Dr. Paul's support.
Like a lot of Paul supporters, I was a registered Independent until last week, when I switched to R to vote for him in the primary. I will never be counted in any news poll but my vote, for Dr. Paul, will be counted on election day.

Thanks ABC for reporting this! We all know most of the mainstream media will continue to ignore Ron Paul no matter what he accomplishes, and this is a pretty big accomplishment! Consider how much mainstream recognition McCain has over Paul.
Posted by: Jason | Jul 6, 2007 2:16:30 PM
I am heartened by this, and it is apparent that Dr. Paul is on an island in the halls of Congress, he is the only one that holds true to the Constitution and what the founding fathers envisioned for the great Nation. He votes and speaks with great thought, a rarity in this age, but one if you look backward lead to the Adams/Jeffesons who provided this nation with a blueprint for Freedom.
The revolution indeed, bring it with money and more importantly education, grassroots movement and becoming involved.

AWESOME NEWS and viva the REVOLUTION !

If the mainstream media takes any legitimate notice, this info will clearly take Ron Paul out of the so-called "second tier" of candidates, and launch him into the "upper tier". This should also result in subtle changes in how the media postures around Ron (location on stage during debates, type of questions asked, not so scathing interviews, etc.). I think with this and the results from Iowa come August, we will see the dropout of Gilmore, Tommy Thompson, and possibly one of Tancredo, Brownback, or Huckabee...
Posted by: Carl | Jul 6, 2007 2:20:33 PM
With a large majority of Americans opposing the war and even a majority of republicans opposing it in key primary states the future looks bright for this peace candidate, especially considering the war will only become less popular as it goes on. I want to thank ABC for showing some great journalistic integrity with this fair coverage of Ron Paul, you have gained my support over the other news media companies, and I hope you continue to cover Ron Paul with the same fairness as the other candidates. While Ron Paul's name might not yet be popular, his message and what he seems to stand for certainly are, and as his message gets out he will only gain more support.
Posted by: Mike | Jul 6, 2007 2:20:38 PM
Go Ron Paul! What is amazing are the remaining republican candidates, all NEOCONs, continuing their global police mantra. It will never dawn on them that except for the southern die hards who would sacrifice themselves to fight pygmies in Australia if bush told them they had WMDs, most of America want nothing to do with global police work.
It is time to fund Ron Paul and exploit
their ignorance.

As riches increase and accumulate in few hands, as luxury prevails in society, virtue will be in a greater degree considered as only a graceful appendage of wealth, and the tendency of things will be to depart from the republican standard. This is the real disposition of human nature; it is what neither the honorable member nor myself can correct. It is a common misfortune that awaits our State constitution, as well as all others.

The thing they did not mention, because Ron Paul, is too modest is that he is not taking money from the scumbags that Rudy deals with. He has never excepted money from Forgin countries or Special Intrests. Most of Ron Pauls cash is from people like me who want someone who tells the truth and is not owned by oil companies, and the millitary machine at large. He also has been raising serious questions about terrorism and offering solutions that do not include comprimising our liberty. (while Rudy is out profiteering off of the tragity of 911)
GO DR PAUL!!!!
Posted by: james | Jul 6, 2007 2:31:14 PM
If the mainstream media outlets covered Ron Paul as much as Romney, McCain, Giuliani, Obama, and Clinton he would have a landslide of support. Anyone that is able to hear his message and learn of his pro-Constitution record will be instantly hooked. With the Constitution being whittled away we better hope that Ron Paul will be the next president of the USA.
Posted by: Lisa Kline | Jul 6, 2007 2:31:37 PM
Kudos to ABC for reporting this story and getting Dr. Paul some time on national TV. It's about time. If we, the supporters of Ron Paul, can keep this up, he might have a real chance at the nomination. If nothing else, he has elevated the tone and substance of the debate. The MSM is going to keep calling us spammers and worse, but we can prove them wrong. You can bet that if and when Ron Paul's support gets into double digits, the MSM will "pull a Dean" and attempt to make him look like a loon. That's when we will have to hit back hard with more campaign contributions, blogs, letters to newspapers editors, volunteer campaign work, etc. Ron Paul in 2008!!

There is a **HUGE** amount of support out there that can be easily quantified monetarily with a little cooperation from all the Ron Paul Meetup groups.
**EVERY** Ron Paul Meetup group absolutely **NEEDS** to keep good track of their spending on promoting Ron Paul for President in 2008.
Even though the Ron Paul campaign cannot include those amounts in their fundraising totals, it will speak volumes as to the amount of independent support Ron Paul is getting on the ground.
Volunteers from the Ron Paul campaign (or anyone for that matter!) **MUST** roll up those amounts reported from the Meetup groups as a seperate number!!! These numbers could be reported by state, by region, and nationally.
I wish I had the time to do this myself.

Steve-O
People have the right to petition the government. Ron Paul did his constitutional duty when he submitted the earmarks on behalf of the constituents, who petitioned for them. He then exercised his choice by voting them down. This is his job, and it is how the system works.
Posted by: Jim | Jul 6, 2007 2:37:30 PM
McCain suffered a massive blow for his amnesty support. What was he thinking?
Ron Paul's common sense politics is very appealing. Unfortunately, there is no exception to the $200 million rule when it comes to presidential elections. He needs to raise at least $100 million to have a chance.

Ron Paul's constituents deserve just as much earmark money as any other American. so yes, he makes sure they get their piece of the pie - and then votes no on the spending. It's not his fault that everybody else votes yes.
What you call a hypocrite the rest of us call integrity and pragmatic actions.
Ron Paul is what every American should look for in our elected officials.

David is a bitter guy who doesn't understand Ron Paul's principled stand on the Constitution.
Yes, he filed 65 earmarks design to send his constituents' tax money back to them instead of sending it somewhere else. And yes, he took a principled Constitutional stand and voted against the unconstitutional legislation to which they were attached.
You want us to fault the man for trying to make sure that his constituents' tax money -- which was going to get spent anyway -- went back into his district instead of building a bridge to nowhere in Alaska?
Puh-lease...
By the way, who are YOU supporting?

As I pull out my debit card AGAIN!!!! Thanks so much ABC for sharing this wonderful news. It has moved me to tears. I pray for all of the moms like me who cannot bear to see their children hearded like cattle off to kill and die...we can stop this RIGHT NOW!!! In five years my twelve year old son very likely could be shipped off, and all of the love, good values, education, and kind heartedness I have instilled in him would very likely be lost as he is trained to be a killer and put it abject misery and death. Again...we have the power to end this RIGHT NOW!!! Like Lena Horne told Diana Ross in The WIZ... "Believe there's a reason to be, Believe you can make time stand still, You know from the moment you try, If you believe, I know you will... Believe in yourself, as I believe in YOU!!!"
The not-so-lunatic internet fanatics who are old, young, rich, poor, black, white, male, female, educated, not-so-educated, green, independent, democrat, republican, libertarian...we all care about this country, and recognize that what protects us from each other and bonds us together is the US Constitution. Even the Black people who have been scared to vote anything other than Democrat will pass this test...GIVE US FREE!!! Freedom outshines any race, any gender, and truth oulasts all lies and pacifism. Find or start a local Ron Paul Meetup and get to work. Send in a donation each month. Wear a Paul T-Shirt, get your friends and family registered to vote and ready to vote in the republican primary. Our very lives depend on it. The US Constitution...Liberty and Justice For ALL! That is all we have...Go forth Ron Paul...We are ready to hear you now...LET FREEDOM RING!!!!
