Sununu Grows Testy When Asked If Thompson Lobbied for Abortion Rights
July 09, 2007 6:56 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Speaking to ABC News on Monday, former White House chief of staff John Sununu re-issued his denial that former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., lobbied him in 1991 on behalf of a group that supports abortion rights and he grew angry when asked if the all-but-announced Republican presidential candidate had met with a member of his staff.
"He never met with me," said Sununu. "I have absolutely no recollection of Fred Thompson coming in to see me, I don't think it ever happened, and he never lobbied me on that issue."
Asked if it was possible whether Thompson met with someone on his staff to lobby the first Bush White House to relax a controversial abortion restriction, the famously prickly Sununu flew off the handle.
"You know, with all due respect, may I comment on that? That's the kind of dumb question that makes you wonder what's wrong with the press. How do you get a job working for ABC asking a question like that? Did he meet with someone on my staff? Did he meet with someone in the street?" asked an incredulous Sununu.
Asked if he was suggesting that the abortion-rights group which claims to have used Thompson's services had fabricated minutes from a Sept. 14, 1991 board meeting in order to undermine Thompson’s standing among conservatives, Sununu said, "I wouldn't put anything past that group."
According to Saturday's Los Angeles Times, Thompson's task was to urge the first Bush administration to "withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that received federal money."
The abortion-rights group which claims to have used Thompson's lobbying services is the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association.
When asked over the weekend about the Los Angeles Times report, Thompson cryptically replied, "I'd just say the flies get bigger in the summertime. I guess the flies are buzzing."
Sununu, who now serves as president of a business consulting firm, spoke with ABC News from the offices of JHS Associates, Ltd., in New Hampshire. Before joining the Bush White House, Sununu served as governor of the Granite State in the 1980s.

Does the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association have a cancelled check or not?

I now am having some suspicions that this is true. FT gave an all-out denial at first, but then backed off later with some weird off-handed comment that didn't add anything and confused us all.
As we all know, getting a cancelled check from 1991, 16 years ago, might be a wee bit more difficult than getting one from last year. However, they are on microfiche and will be found (if they exist) eventually.
Until then, it's going to have to be a matter of some time until FT is either exonerated, or humiliated.

Why ask Sununu? Why not ask the "original" source? The pathetic shell of the LATimes prints unsourced rumors and ABC asks Sununu?? Both are not news sources, they are just the democrat party attacking Republican candidates.
Don't call yourself news.

What's the point? The libs shoot themselves (or republican adversaries) in the foot trying to accuse Thompson of doing the dirty work of abortion. Well let me suggest that you wait till you get the facts together before you start distorting them. Works better that way. Not all conservatives are as concerned about the abortion issue as many democrats think. In fact republicans are pretty diverse on social issues.

I don't care that Fred Thompson lobbied for abortions and is a flip-floppin' all over the place. He was great on Law and Order and would make a great president like John Wayne was.

And how is this newsworthy? Which Democratic candidate has stated that he/she will fight tooth and nail to overturn Roe v Wade? So why are we even paying attention? Probably using Dan Rather’s sources anyway. When we get through pointing fingers maybe we can get to real issues.

Thompson is just an empty suit upon whom some desperate Repubs are projecting their futile hope that Ronnie Reagan will be raised from the tomb. The truth is that Thompson is far more like the ineffectual frat boy currently occupying the WH than RR. However, since many of these delusional Repubs can buy Romney's complete flip-flops without blinking, they may have no trouble voting for a "pro-life" guy who most likely took money to lobby for an abortion rights group. After all, there's nothing Repubs respect more than making money, even if it's tainted money.

Thompson should ban LA Times reporters from his campaign. So far they've written stories that he will be hurt because he played a racist in an unpopular movie, the uncredible, straining story, emphasis on story, about abortion lobbying, and today a non-story about how some other Republican senators once disagreed with him. What is the Times problem? They need to chill out.
Same goes for the NY Times calling Mrs. Thompson, professional and happily married mother of two of Fred's children a trophy wife. Conservatives take these cheap shots as a good sign for the general election.

Thompson is a Washington insider/former lobbyist who could care less about anyone but those who pay him. Go for it conservatives...he's all yours...

I am a liberal and I have no problem with FT lobbying for pro-abortion groups. It is pretty typical for the hypocrites in the GOP, they would do anything for money. It is not big news, business as usual.

Sununu doth protest too much.
It's a reasonable point that he may not know about every time a lobbyist lobbied his staff. But note that for all his vituperation he doesn't deny knowing that Thompson lobbied his staff on behalf of federal funding for abortions. He only denies recalling Thompson coming to see himself specifically. I've got to wonder if that narrow denial is calculated and the rage a way of trying to obscure the issue.

Hey RealityCheck, LibSlayer is right. Not all Republicans are anti-abortion; many think it should not be a political issue, along with same-sex marriage. I hope it's true, I have respect for any politician who doesn't just tow the party line--and I don't really care which party.

Oh yes those greedy Republicans take money wherever they can get it. How big is Martin Sheen's house again?

Yo Chaos..Martin Sheen earned his money acting so like any professional actor or sports star they can live anywhere they want!

Hey doe, How about Johnny "slimy ambulance chaser" Edwards? He earned his money bankrupting doctors and vaccine makers. Guess that is ok too. Everything is bad for Republicans, but its ok doe Dems. typical

I saw that HRC used the words "God's Creation" recently. Does this mean she's become an Intelligent Designer?

I love how conservatives are crying and whining, "Witch hunt! Witch hunt!" as news sources look into a story that could reflect on the integrity of a Republican candidate. However, when it comes to them using similar tactics, well, then it's totally ok.
Does the expression "Swift Boating" ring any bells?
