Wilson: Bush 'Accessory' to Obstruction of Justice

Share

July 02, 2007 9:28 PM

ABC News' Steven Portnoy Reports: The former ambassador whose criticism of the Bush administration touched off the CIA leak scandal calls President Bush an "accessory" to obstruction of justice.

In an interview with ABC News Radio, Joseph Wilson said Bush's commutation of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby’s prison term demonstrates that "this administration is corrupt to the core – from top to bottom."

The rare exercise of executive clemency saves Libby from 30 months in federal prison, but it does not absolve him of $250,000 in fines and two years of supervised release.

Libby was convicted in March of lying to federal investigators about his role in the leak of the identify of Wilson's wife Valerie Plame, who was an undercover CIA operative.

In commuting part of Libby's sentence, Wilson says, President Bush is complicit in Libby’s crimes.

"He is an accessory to the obstruction of justice in this commutation of the sentence," Wilson told ABC News. "He, himself, is now under a cloud."

Wilson, who criticized the White House in the summer of 2003 for improperly claiming that Saddam Hussein sought weapons-grade uranium from Africa, is suing a number of current and former Bush administration officials – including Vice President Cheney – claiming the White House staffers sought to ruin his reputation and that of his wife, former CIA officer Valerie Plame.

But, he said, "We have suffered nothing compared to what has been suffered by our troops and their family members as a consequence of a war engaged in by an administration that justified it through lies."

Shame On Bush. He should have stayed out of this. Libby got a jail sentence that he should have taken place. Would I or any other ordinary citizen have gotten any help from Bush? I think not.

There is absolutely no justice. Scooter
Libby was prosecuted for lying to a grand jury and obstruction of justice almost did time;Martha Stewart was prosecuted for lying to a grand jury and obstruction of justice, she did time; Little Billie Clinton obstructed justice and lied to a grand jury as a matter of course through the years and he got a library; IT'S GOOD not to be equal under the law!!

Wilson lies again, saying we have suffered though "a war engaged in by a[ Bush] administration that justified it though lies." Except that neither the 9/11 Commission, nor the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence could find a Bush lie, and neither could the UK commission headed by Lord Butler. In fact the latter found that the claim of Saddam's pursuit of low-grade uranium remaned valid, and the former found that Wilson lied about what he found, resulting in even more confidence in intelligence fears about the threat Saddam posed to the US.

How nice of him to "lie" again, when the proverbial shoe is on the other foot.

My God is there no end? Bush/Cheney should hand in their resignations,or Cheney should take Bush hunting with a little Jack Daniels.

Anybody happy about this is guilty of obstructing the justice we deserve and need.

To think that some people still think that Valerie Plame was not a covert agent after she tesified to Congress UNDER OATH makes me think that we are in serious trouble. OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM IS BROKEN, AND THIS ADMINISTRATION BROKE IT.

monique asks "Why was there an investigation" of the leak?

First, Bush apologized prematurely about the "sixteen words" in the State of The Union speech in 2003 when an Italian letter about yellow cake uraniuam was exposed as a crude forgery. This created an aura of gulibility in the administration's case for war. And therfore doubt in the chattering classes that could be seized upon.

Next, Bush caved too readily to the phony firestorm surrounding Wilson's charges against the administration of lying about their intel on Iraq.

Then, finally, Fitzgerald treated a liar's brief as honest, respectable, and serious. Dispite the next day evidence that it was not before him when Armitage was discovered to be the source of the leak!

Case closed.

Lastly, monique asks, "Why is there not an investigation into Wilsons lies and Plames lies??" Great question, but the answer is readily answered when you see that the media stoked Wilson's lies and benefit from them (ideologically and "news" wise). E

ven Murray Waas new book, which misleadingly documents and recycles the Bush conspriacy fantasy of the Left about the case, acknowledges the best source on Palme/Wilson: Tom McGuire of justoneminute.typepad blog fame (who is THE best source for ALL the facts). But Waas learns nothing about the case from McGuire except what to leave out, just to make the fantasy he retails appear "serious." despite being debunked multiple times in the official reports I

Today, the media echoes the fantasy. Especially David Shuster on MSNBC, Chris Mathew's flunkie.

You don't believe me? Then why does Waas leave out Clinton's Iraq Liberation Act of October 1998? Which calls for regime change in Iraq, and installation of a democratic government. It's the basis on which even Clinton said he would have taken down Saddam after 9/11?

To Leftist conspiracy fanatics for whom it is all about Bush, this basic fact seriously muddies the clear waters of sinister guilt.

Bush can (and will) still pardon Libby at the end of his term.

THE TRUTH: Joe Wilson is a Democrat who worked as a US diplomat in Africa, on and off from 1976 to 1995. Wilson's wife Valerie Plame worked as a CIA "non-official cover" posing as an energy analyst for a fake company called Brewster Jennings & Associates in 1999. At that time, Plame was likely investigating the illegal international transfer of fissile materials. In 2003, when newspaper articles "outed" Plame, she was no longer working as a covert agent. In 2003, Joe Wilson wrote several politically charged newspaper articles stating that his 2002 CIA mission to Niger, during which he interviewed former Niger government officials, debunked the Bush administration's claim that Iraq sought yellowcake (uranium oxide) from Niger. Wilson claimed in his articles that the Bush administration lied in order to gain public support to invade Iraq. First of all, if those former Niger officials, who may have been personally enriched, had sold uranium to Iraq, or even if Iraq had propositioned them, why would they tell Wilson? Secondly, Wilson's inflammatory articles made administration officials wonder how Wilson got a job at the CIA, and how he knew so much about the confidential CIA reports he claimed to refute. American journalists flooded administration officials with questions about Joe Wilson and whether Wilson's claims were true, because Wilson was making such outrageous charges. Wilson's political attacks on the Bush administration were revealed as partisan politics after it was revealed that Valerie Plame had donated $1000 to Al Gore's election campaign in 1999. On the publicly available FEC form, Plame had listed Brewster Jennings & Associates (the CIA front) as her employer. When reporters realized that Brewster was not an actual company, they dug deeper. Dick Armitage revealed to Robert Novak that Plame worked for the CIA, which explained why Brewster Jennings & Associates was not a real firm and how Wilson got a job with the CIA. Libby’s three-year sentence for lying about his involvement in this ridiculous situation has been commuted by President Bush, and Democrats are screaming that the US Constitution has been “trampled.” What a joke. You people really need to get a life.

Why didn't Clinton serve any time for lying under oath?? Libby wasn't found guilty of a crime involving Valerie Plame. She was no longer a covert agent. She wasn't ousted.

Bush hate will get you no where here on earth. First look at yourselves and fellow Democrat's. All of this hate just eat's at your happiness today and forever. Spend some of this energy on doing good. There are plenty of hurting people out there, who need someone to talk to, bring them a meal, drive them to the doctor's, and yes, there's a Great need for adult's to go to court to stand up for our children, They're being abused and killed by their own parent's, and the foster parent's, because they are over crowded. Become a foster parent and make a huge difference in a child's life. All of these Democrat's you're always worrying about, can take care of themselves.

I truly hope some of you will see the light, and do some good somewhere, make a lasting impression on a child. Help them to have a good and productive life.

Blessings, Audrey

S_Tempter nails it; nicely done, bro. This prosecution was the second crime committed here, after Joe Wilson's lies and deception in an important war on terror investigation.

Fitzgerald is a putz and a loser. He is supposed to be prosecuting crime in Chicago and Crook County, which are run by the mob (Chicago and Richie Daley) and a retarded punk (Toddler Stroger), all under the banner of the Democrats.

Fitzgerald has done squat here to get things under control; instead he's off shagging the dog in D.C. with this farce prosecution.

First thing Bush has done right in months...

scooter libby was found guilty of obstructing justice. I wonder what the BUSH administration thinks that they are doing if not obstructing justice themselves. this is proof positive that the rich and powerful can do to reward their crimminal friends for keeping their dirty little mouths shut. the ultimate double standard. There should be a law to put all of them in jail.

Let's see if I got this right. . . . .If a CIA agent is not working actively in a covert capacity at the moment he or she cannot be "outed" because, well, you know, she isn't doing any down and dirty stuff at this moment!! Nice logic!! Some real brain power on display here!!!

I can not beleive the comments on this board so far, most of them are totally outrageous.

1. Patrick Fitzgerald is a conservative who was appointed by Bush so to say he was on a "witch hunt" dosen't make since. This is a conservative prosecutor who did his job, it was Bush who called for the investigation.

2. Remember when Bush said he would fire whoever leaked classified information, just another broken promise.

3. This has nothing to do with wether or not this was a witch hunt or a justified investigation, the fact is Libby lied and obstructed justice. He was convicted by 12 jurors who the Libby team picked. The case was presided over by a CONSERVATIVE judge. Libby also had a substantial legal defense fund and excellent lawyers and yet was still convicted.

4. The same people who are so upset by Clintons perjury, and I beleive he was wrong also, are now defending Libby's perjury and obstruction. The case is vice versa Democrats who defended Clinton now look at Libby as guilty.

I voted for Bush the first time, was smart enough to change my vote the second time but gave him due consideration. I am an independent and will not even consider a republican in 08, though I may not vote democrat either. When will this country wake up and realize it dosen't matter who is in office they are above the law. The facts are what you need to look at not the propoganda rhetoric. If you want change we need to let them all know that we the people demand it. Unchekcked power has gone on for too long and we havr the power to change it, lets exercise that power in 08,VOTE!

Carter pardoned Clinton. Ford pardoned Nixon. Clinton pardoned his supporters. I fail to see how this is news. Everyone knew it was going to happen. It only served as a vehicle to let the Democrats point the finger at Republicans again. While our Democratically controlled Congress and Senate have been pointing the finger, what legislation have they completed? What have they accomplished other than their pay raise? Democrats and Republicans yell at each other and we pay the price. We need to stop party politics and get some work done.....am I sounding as bad as tumbleweedin?..Ron Paul...

I, too, am outraged at Bush's latest act, and I suspect that he commuted Libby's sentence, rather than pardoned him because Bush and his gang want to keep Libby in the criminal justice system, where Libby can still hide behind the 5th amendment. If Libby were pardoned, he could (and probably would) be compelled to testify and could not claim 5th amendment rights.

I'm sure all this is to protect the administration, specifically Cheney, and most likely Bush, from being charged under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act, which states that it "a federal crime to intentionally reveal the identity of an agent whom one knows to be or recently in certain covert roles with a U.S. intelligence agency".

Posted by: Susan | Jul 3, 2007 12:44:32 PM

Just another example of the overwhelming corruption that infects this administration. The treason trail actually led to Rove, but Libby took the hit like a good foot soldier. And the retiring Armitage was simply a diversion. But don't worry about poor Libby; he will be fully pardoned in January 2009. Otherwise, I am sure he will start singing like a bird.

Posted by: Dave | Jul 3, 2007 1:00:20 PM

and to those Bush supporters who make up the 30% that actually approve of his actions... ARE YOU LIVING IN A CAVE? Stop watching the partisan fluff on Fox and look around with wide open eyes. Look around you and compare this country to where it was prior to Nov 2000. We had peace and prosperity. We were respected in the world. Now we have a White House that brazenly says that it is above the law (tyranny)and trapped in a manufactured war built on lies and supported by treasonous actions. Our cherished privacy has been completely trampled and our Justice Department, who should protect us from such things is completely compromised. And though he said no to tax increases, the money coming out of my pocket everytime I fill-up sure feels like a tax to me. THE WORST PRESIDENT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THIS PROUD NATION and the darkest time this nation has ever had.

Posted by: Dave | Jul 3, 2007 1:18:01 PM

FACT Valerie Plame was covert according to the CIA. "Ms. Wilson was a covert CIA employee for who the CIA was taking affirmative measures to conceal her intelligence relationship to the United States"

She was traveling out of the country using aliases at least some of the time. Scooter Libby and friends had no business even mentioning Valerie Plame to any reporter.

There was no prosecution of the fact that Plame was CIA because LIBBY LIED. The prosecutor was stopped dead in his tracks and could not complete his investigation because LIBBY LIED.

Fitzgerald can no longer use the standard prosecutorial technique of getting those who have been convicted to cooperate in return for a lighter sentance.

I guess Bushie knew what he was doing. He commuted Libby's sentance to keep him quiet about who else was involved in leaking Plame's name to the press.

The fact, however, seems obvious that Mr. Bush since the time he was a temper-tantrum-throwing infant has not cared what others think, provided he gets his own way. Mr. Bush's entire known history validates this. a very dangerous person to himself, and more importantly, to others. This is especially troublesome to those who worry about a mentally unstable personality having access to a weapon, let alone multiple nuclear weapons. In deference to the security of our nation and the well-being of our citizens Mr. Bush ought to be committed to an asylum and deprived of the powers of his office by any means necessary.

regardless of whether or not wilson lied about pre-war intelligence or if Bush lied about his reasoning in the Iraq mess, it does not negate the fact that Bush still pardoned Libby maybe full pardon, who knows but that still sends the message that this white house is above the law, Wasn't the public so outraged by the lax punishment of paris hilton for DUI. Libby was charged for conspiracy on a grand level. Yes, he still has the conviction, but could any other felon really get away with this?
Honestly, how can Bush and Cheney still be in office with barely more than a whisper of impeachment. Now if that doesn't show failure of Law and balance to not only the American public but also to the world. Then I have no idea what does.
