Ann Romney Doesn't Recall Contribution to Abortion Group

ABC News Tahman Bradley Reports: Former Gov. Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, said Sunday she does not remember making a contribution to an abortion-rights group in the early 1990s.

"A check for $100 written in 1993, I believe, was when the check was…I don't even remember writing the check," Mrs. Romney said on "Fox News Sunday".

"I mean, how do you remember all the checks you've written, you know, how many years ago was that?"

The Romney campaign confirmed to ABC News in May that Mrs. Romney gave a $150 donation to Planned Parenthood in 1994. LINK

The journey to a "pro-life" position came for Mrs. Romney at the same time her husband changed his position on the issue while serving as Massachusetts governor, she said.

"I've had to make a decision, a personal decision on this and it came pretty much at the same time with Mitt…and I had to come out on the side of life."

Mitt Romney, who is seeking the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, considered himself "effectively pro-choice" until his shift in 2004.

My, my. They even have their wives trained well, don't they?

they are politicians always forget things that are politically in correct and remember posotive events.

I have no problem with politicians changing position on issues. I do have a problem with them and there families being so political about it. I mean, a contribution to a political campaign group is not the sort of thing you easily forget, so why not just say 'Yes in 1994 I was in favour of abortion, but after long thought and deep consideration I have changed my position on this controversial and difficult issue.'

I don't understand the problem. This lady wrote out a check for $100 in 1993 that turned out to be for an abortion group. You have to be kidding me. I didn't know a woman with her kind of money would even know how to write a check. They all have secretaries to do that. Have we lowered our politics to this level?

These guys are as phony as the other GOP... have money and are now seeking power... just like GW. I will NEVER forget romney's DOUBLE GUANTANAMO statement... it pretty much summed up this guy.

This story is as lame as the one about Mitt strapping his dog to the roof of his car 20 years ago and it peed on itself. Nobody really cares. And as far as the double the size of Quantanamo goes that isn't a bad idea. America has a lot of enemies and what better place to put them. The thing that bothers me is leaving them there year after year with no trial. I say try them, execute them, give them a prison term or send them home. Mitt doesn't favor giving them access to the American judicial system which is fine but hopefully he'll speed up the process of getting the military tribunals finished.

Mitt is the biggest liar I've seen come around lately. He's got a different answer for anything you ask him, depending on the state he's in, who's he talking with and what the issue is. I see his wife is the same. Like one emailer said, just be honest about it! This guy is so slick and polished; hopefully the American people won't get fooled again, but I'm afraid that's not the case. Looking at the current choice of both DEM and GOP candidates, it's pretty slim pickings out there. I don't like any of them, but I guess that's what we're down to. We've finally gotten the government we deserve.... how sad!

typical gop behavior....not that mrs. romney would be hypocritical, though that is typical for the neo-cons nowadays, but that the anti-American, anti-Christian few that stranglehold that dying party would demonize one of their own for a decision made almost two decades ago......of course, these are the same people who wouldn't hesitate to crucify Jesus Christ again if their new lords, the false prophets who call themselves Christian leaders, sensed even the slightest challenge to their positions of power....all built on their misuse of god and his/her message....

Anyone could change their minds as long as it is not for political reasons. I am as fickle as John Kerry. I guess that makes me weak right?

Basically my main point is voting doesn't count especially with electoral colleges that are supposed to vote for me, but don't.

Huckabee is a very adroit public speaker. He communcates his message in life-like, cogent terms, with compelling examples like the story he told (at the Ames Straw Poll) of what his then-11-yo daughter entered into the "Comments" section of a Visitors Book after visiting the Yad Vashem holocaust museum: “Couldn't somebody do something?”

Effective.

Huckabee puts listeners at ease, and reassures them through clear concepts and a natural, integrated manner of communication (no doubt something well-cultivated as a pastor). He’s not demanding, like a Ron Paul, nor is he as “well-scripted” as Romney, nor as mechanical-squinty like Brownback.

Most importantly, Huckabee convinces many that he is ONE with the FairTax grassroots movement (5). While many - like Romney, and others, who are invested in the current income tax system - seek to demagog (1) the well-researched FairTax plan, its acceptance in the professional / academic community (2) continues to grow. Failure to enact the FairTax - choosing instead to try to "flatten" a NON-FLATTENABLE income tax system - will result in an irrevocable economic meltdown (3)!

Here is why the FairTax MUST replace the income tax. It's:

• SIMPLE, easy to understand
• EFFICIENT, inexpensive to comply with and doesn't cause less-than-optimal business decisions for tax minimization purposes
• FAIR, loophole free and everyone pays their share
• LOW TAX RATE, achieved by broad base with no exclusions
• PREDICTABLE, doesn't change, so financial planning is possible
• UNINTRUSIVE, doesn't intrude into our personal affairs or limit our liberty
• VISIBLE, not hidden from the public in tax-inflated prices or otherwise
• PRODUCTIVE, rewards, rather than penalizes, work and productivity

Its benefits are as follows:

FOR INDIVIDUALS:
• No more tax on income - make as much as you wish
• You receive your full paycheck - no more deductions
• You pay the tax when you buy "at retail" - not "used"
• No more double taxation (e.g. like on current Capital Gains)
• Reduction of "pre-FairTaxed" retail prices by 20%-30%
• Adding back 29.9% FairTax maintains current price levels
• FairTax would constitute 23% portion of new prices
• Every household receives a monthly check, or "pre-bate"
• "Prebate" is "advance payback" for monthly consumption to poverty level
• FairTax's "prebate" ensures progressivity, poverty protection
• Finally, citizens are knowledgeable of what their tax IS
• Elimination of "parasitic" Income Tax industry
• NO MORE IRS. NO MORE FILING OF TAX RETURNS by individuals
• Those possessing illicit forms of income will ALSO pay the FairTax
• Households have more disposable income to purchase goods
• Savings is bolstered with reduction of interest rates

FOR BUSINESSES:
• Corporate income and payroll taxes revoked under FairTax
• Business compensated for collecting tax at "cash register"
• No more tax-related lawyers, lobbyists on company payrolls
• No more embedded (hidden) income/payroll taxes in prices
• Reduced costs. Competition - not tax policy - drives prices
• Off-shore "tax haven" headquarters can now return to U.S
• No more "favors" from politicians at expense of taxpayers
• Resources go to R&D and study of competition - not taxes
• Marketplace distortions eliminated for fair competition
• US exports increase their share of foreign markets

FOR THE COUNTRY:
• 7% - 13% economic growth projected in the first year of the FairTax
• Jobs return to the U.S.
• Foreign corporations "set up shop" in the U.S.
• Tax system trends are corrected to "enlarge the pie"
• Larger economic "pie," means thinner tax rate "slices"
• Initial 23% portion of price is pressured downward as "pie"
increases
• No more "closed door" tax deals by politicians and business
• FairTax sets new global standard. Other countries will follow

C'mon people haven't you got it together politicians like Romney and Rankle are decoy's to put issues in the news so later on when Congress suddenly is voting them into law the politicos can say this issue has been around for a dog's age and nobody complained against it.

So Mitt the Millionaire Frat Boy's wife is as much of a lying FLIP-FLOPPER as he is. Big surprise.

I don't see what the big deal is. Planned parenthood does abortions, sure. But they do a lot of other stuff as well. Like std prevention and treatment. Isn't it possible that she could have been trying to support those things rather than abortion??

While Planned Parenthood has a handful of clinics where women can seek abortions, that isn't their chief function. Most of their clinics do not offer abortion at all, but instead offer a wide variety of health screenings at low cost to women, as well as financial assistance for birth control, which can help reduce unplanned pregnancy and therefore abortions. To characterize them as an abortion group the way this article did is very misleading.

She must have picked up some pointers from Alberto Gonzales.

Welcome to politics Mrs Romney! this is what those horrible people who disagree with anything do to people in the spotlight. If you dont realize this early, they will burn you out explaining yourself indefinitly! Youre allowed to contribute as you please. Planned Parenthood is a wonderful organization with lots of resources for the public! There is nothing to explain. Just notice that when they go at you on the little things;they dont have anything to stick it to you for on the REAL issues.. so... hang on im sure youre in for quite a ride! Try not to be distracted by the noise on the sidelines.. its just a group of people trying to get too much attention!

I agree, she does sound like she's working off the Gonzales script. Why can't they just be honest? They're making themselves look bad. I think America is done with the Romney team, he's going down, just like McCain, and just like Giuliani. Ron Paul's the only viable candidate left.
