Biden's Son May Report to Iraq

ABC News' Brian Wheeler Reports: Senator Joe Biden, D-Dela., says his son's National Guard Unit has been notified they will be deployed to Iraq in 2008.

According to Kay Henderson of Radio Iowa, Biden told a crowd at the Iowa State Fair, "I don't want (Beau) going. I don't want him going, but I tell you what -- I don't want my grandson or my granddaughters going back in 15 years and so how we leave makes a big difference."

In a more pointed shot, the Senator added, "There's no political point worth my son's life," referring to Sens. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Democratic rivals who both voted against a troop funding bill in May.

"There's no political point worth anybody's life out there," Biden said.

Beau Biden serves as Delaware's Attorney General and in the 261st Signal Brigade of the Delaware National Guard.  Biden's campaign staff confirmed to ABC News that Beau Biden's unit has indeed been told to make ready for deployment to Iraq; inquiries to the National Guard were not immediately returned.

UPDATE: ABC News contacted Lt. Col. Len Gratteri, spokesperson for the Delaware National Guard, who confirmed that the 261st Signal Brigade, of which Beau Biden is a member, is preparing for deployment to Iraq.

According to Gratteri, "The 261st, Beau included, is preparing for deployment to Iraq. About six months ago, they got the notice that they were put on the Army Force Generation List, which informs them they need to be ready to deploy in 2008."

They're in a bit of limbo state now, during which funding and personnel and administrative issues can be worked out, then comes an alert that says sometime in the next 30 to 90 days they'll be deploying to Iraq.  Then the 261st will receive a Mobilization Date.

It's a three step process, Gratteri explained, and they're on step one.  Told to get ready, but not told they're definitely going.

I am a US ARMY soldier deployed in Iraq. The only thing I can say about a the Senators son is good luck to him, and I hope he does not end up in a bad place over here. That means anywhere. Just wait until there is a soccor game and Iraq wins or a wedding. He better not go outside until the rouge bullets stop flying. IDF(indirect fire) is the term you have probably heard. Good luck Senator Biden.

I like Biden. And this is part of the reason why. He is the only one out there with personal interest invested in the military. Good luck Biden.

Every military family faces this, every deployment. At least Joe Biden walks the walk, when he talks the talk. His comment that "There is no political point worth my son's life" is a little too honest for the current political climate. I'll respect Biden for who he is. However, he has no chance of being president. He doesn't have the star power.

For the Senator to make such a statement, means he is in the wrong job.

I applaud Senator Biden for his stance on not making a political point to jeopardize someone's life. I also applaud the fact that he is not using political influence in order to keep his son from going to Iraq.

Romney could provide a more meaningful service to his country if he would give up his futile campaign for the presidency and counsel his sons to serve so that those who have already fulfilled their enlistment committments could come home. Then, maybe, he would join Biden and others trying to end Bush`s insane war of choice in Iraq, an intervention in another nation`s political struggle for control. How many ways do the Iraqi people, versus Bush`s puppets, have to tell us to get out of their country before these Republicans will listen? Probably only one way, if we need to institute a draft.

You know, years ago families of privilege did serve their country. Patton came from extraordinary wealth. 3 of the 4 Kennedy's served in WWII, one gave his life. Service matters. It builds character. Romney and his family are just about wealth and comfort. Even the British heirs both joined their country's armed forces. I think this will be a big issue. Anyone who advocates the continuance of the war, will have to explain their own lack of personal sacrifice to support it. This is not and should not be a partisan issue. Both McCain and Hunter's sons have served. Hunter's son is on his 3rd post-9/11 tour. Sen. Webb's son is of course serving. Wealthy families still need to serve in order to thank their country for everything that have been given. This is a great wedge issue which will pry away military family votes most likely from the Republican nominee, who will most likely be Romney. I was insulted by his comment.

Senator Jim Webb's son is also in the military and i believe is currently in Iraq. hes the one that Served under Ronald Reagan, then recently ran for senate as a Democrat and beat that republican who was calling some guy a racist remark..."macaca" I think in Virginia.
But yeah, Biden is cool
I'd vote for him if he gets the nod.

How can ABC tell our enemy the specific unit and possible deployment information about a family member of one of our government officials. It is really news or is it just to get the spotlight on this individual to keep him from being deployed. Just by reporting it you put the entire unit in more danger. All of us here know this war is being fought not only here but in the media. Americans support us why does the media refuse to. More often than not I don't think the "press" thinks before they report.

why hasn't the Bush daughter's served their County in WAR? This is mind boggling!!! That the one who took us to WAR never served, nor is he willing to send his children to defend his WAR policies....I know that we have an all volunteer Army. But you would think that those who support Bush would enlist. I can only assume that by not enlisting, the Bush girls do not support their father's insane WAR.

Bravo Biden...!Who says Democrats don't have patriotism.? Only those who start wars and don't fight them.

Posted by: Ed Reynolds | Aug 17, 2007 1:24:13 AM

At least there is one democrat who has a child serving in the army and will go to Iraq. Can we say the same about the so called patriotic party called Republican Party. All the talk of "Freedom requires sacrifices ..." is aimed at innocent poor Americans but does not apply to them. Hypocrisy? Even if there is a draft these guys know how to beat it, Bush did it(he was actually AWOL, which is a crime in military but got away with it), Clinton did it and got away with it. I was even surprised Americans elected two presidents who ran away from their duty towards their country. How can they be good presidents. How can you expect them to protect Americans. In the name of security if a president can lie to Americans (go to YouTube and watch all the statements made by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and you know clearly they lied and still lying) how can he protect Americans? Outrageous is the belief of the dumb patriots that he is protecting them. While he is making lot of money from Radical Islamic country Saudi Arabia a nation that supports terrorist? That is power of Patriotism it can blind it's own people but cant fight an enemy. The use of patriotism is prevalent all over the world to cheat it's own people.

This is why we need to restore the draft, so everyone can share the burden of seing loved ones off to war. When the reality of war touches the politicians in a personal way, then their reckless voting to support and sustain unnecessary wars causes them to pause first.
I commend the senator's son for his courage.

"We are in possession of what I think to be compelling evidence that Saddam Hussein has, and has had for a number of years, a developing capacity for the production and storage of weapons of mass destruction. ...without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. And now he has continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction ... So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real ... " “I will be voting to give the president of the United States the authority to use force - if necessary - to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." SENATOR JOHN F KERRY (D, MA), in 2003

"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction."SENATOR TED KENNEDY (D, MA), in 2002

"As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." – NANCY PELOSI, in 1998

"Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." – AL GORE, in 2002

"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including al Qaeda members .. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons." - Sen. Hillary Clinton (D, NY), in 2002

"Iraq is a long way from [here], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face." - Madeline Albright, in 1998

"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." - Madeline Albright, Clinton Secretary of State, in 1999

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." - Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, in 1998

"The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." – BILL CLINTON, in 1998

...

Way to tell these war mongers off, Joe!

I salute Senator Biden's son for his upcoming service in Iraq. Service in Iraq is dangerous but necessary in the War on Terror. The Democrats generally do not get it, in understanding the global threat, but it exists, and the front is Iraq. Every parent of a serviceman (or woman) to Iraq gets my respect, regardless of his understanding of the threat. Those parents will experience an emptiness in their stomachs every day that their child serves in harm's way. My Marine son served two tours in Ramadi. I know the feeling in the stomach of a parent with a child in harm's way. God Bless 'em all.
