Gingrich calls War on Terror "Phony"

ABC News' Joe Kildea Reports: Newt Gingrich, former Republican House Speaker, called the war on terror "phony" in a speech to a group of young conservatives in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

The potential GOP presidential candidate told attendees of the National Conservative Student Conference that "We’re about to enter the seventh year of this phony war…and we’re losing."

Gingrich added, "None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war."

Instead of the current strategy to fight terrorism, Gingrich said we should focus on energy independence. "We have to have a national energy strategy, which basically says to the Saudis, 'We’re not going to rely on you.'"

Gingrich also attacked the current administration and former Republican Congressional leadership in saying "We were in charge for six years…I don’t think you can look and say that was a great success."

In a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, Gingrich received 7 percent support for the Republican presidential nomination, putting him fifth, just behind former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney. While speaking to the Aspen Institute on Friday, Gingrich did not rule out an '08 White House run.

"If at some point down the road there is so much pressure for me to run, I will run. But I have zero interest in being one of 12 people given 30 seconds to answer non-questions," he said.

The National Conservative Student Conference is an annual event for college students sponsored by the Young America's Foundation held at Washington's George Washington University.

Do have proof that Newt meant to say that. Please provide.

Isn't what they said during the 70's? Drill now and develop future technologies. I think the high gas prices are the only way for alternative energies to get adequate funding for development.

Gingrich is the smartest man in American politics today, If you don't believe it - listen to him for more than 30 seconds, then you will agree. Every time this man speaks he is full of ideas, he brings solutions to tough problems, and he brings dialog to the problems that need to be worked out and he does it without hate and animosity. I hope he runs - he is exactly the person we need in the highest office.

American Joe: You're right! In fact, I remembered that in the 1970s when oil price spiked, there was all kinds of talks about alterntative fuels. One of the thing that was popular to research was to liquify coal. All of that went by the wayside when oil price fell to less than $20/barrel. The wisdom was that it could never be cost effective until oil increased beyond $35/barrel. I can't remember the last time when oil was less than $35/barrel!! There is a serious effort to get moving on alternative fuels, but frankly folks; it won't work for the long run because is costs too much energy to produce ethanol. There has to be a different approach, a different fuel.

My current choice - a Democrat - continues to be villafied by the press and cable. They don't wan't someone who can think for himself. They don't wan't anyone who is not beholden to the 'back room millionaires'. With the things Geingrich is now saying, he is opening my eyes. Newt, I'm a Democrat who could vote for you.

I disagree with Newt only on one
major point - we cannot be beat
militarily. But we can be beat
in this Iraq War politically and
economically. A few years back
OBL even said so in one of his
taped messages. So, politically
and economically, in a real sense,
we are losing.

We simply have to take a few steps
back and fight this war on terror
in a different sane way. And not on
Al Queda's terms.

I like Gingrich always have. I may have not agreed with some things he's said or done for that matter but UNLIKE most of washington he is VERY straight foreward to the point of being scary and bullish. Good Combination Ron Paul and Newt ... But truth tellers Both Strong and not afraid of the system

We are losing a lot of battles since this creap has become President. He would not know the truth if it came up and hit him the face.
Look all this money that is given to people that don't deserve it.
There is all kinds of terror even in your own neighborhood but no wants to notice that.
If the Americans knew the whole story about everything I would hate to hear
about how many people would take their lives.
This President is drunk don't forget that so their memory is not so good.

Man ... you guys need to wake up.
The root cause of global warming and war is Dick Chenney and his Oil Company lobbyist and GM and Insurance company.
The energy independance ? Please watch the movie or youtube on "Who Killed The Electric Car."

When are you going to get it through your heads? The reason thatthe troops are over there is to keep the terrorists from coming over here and leveling our cities. Is that what you want? Not everyone is against this war. Meanwhile, here at home, people should be getting back to their churches and back to their faiths and pray for our President and all the leaders of this country and other countries.

governator: Here is something to 'chomp' on: The ICE/BP predict there is something in the order of 2,000 terrorists residing among the illegal alien population of the United States. Given that 'they' have promised us a 'dirty' bomb, I would be living in extreme fear if I were within fifty miles of any of their targets. The list is quite extensive. The problem is that we are not fighting them HERE which is exactly what they want. If we were to take Usama, they would retaliate. Simple logic. As to the flow of oil, GO SOLAR. Simple, take out the 'middleman' and we would have almost limitless energy. At one time, a survey was done and it was discovered that covering Pima and Pinal counties in Arizona (which were mostly undeveloped at that time) would provide enough energy to power the entire country. I doubt that is true today, but throw in a few more counties and we could have the power problem solved.

Funny how demorats are too busy attacking Bush as if he is on the ballot in 08. Gulianni/Gingrich w00t.

GASP! SHOCK! Uhhhh. CAN'T SPEAK!!! I can't believe Newt Gingrich, of all people, has finally admitted the truth. I commend him for his bravery. It will take a nation of Gingrich's to reverse the awe inspiring damage the neo-conservative movement has done to our great country over the past 7 years.

hmmm...phony war on terror...energy independence...sounds like Al Gore-speak...

this from the same man who was cheering on the sidelines during the run-up to the war...

if he was a democrat, he'd be accused of being a flip-flopper (i.e. John Kerry)...

Posted by: plo | Aug 4, 2007 7:08:33 PM

How about a Ron Paul(Pres) and Gingrich(VP) ticket?? That might be of interest.

hmmmmm.interesting comments that actually do have some merit,but....doesn't sound like newt to me!

It's have to believe ole Newt said that, although it is true. I guess he's just trying to put some distance between him and georgie boy. I've got to run over and see if fox covered this story!

Posted by: Earl | Aug 4, 2007 8:23:51 PM

Well, just as I thought, not one word from fox, I guess this is another one Rupert wouldn't let the read print or talk about.

"djconklin: You might be right about going to hydrogen. How do we get there?"

Some say that we don't have the infrastructure for it--well how much of an iunfrastructure was around when Ford was cranking out automobiles? As for the hydrogen itself, we take human waste run it into tanks, collect the methane and burn to to supply the electrolysis to the liquid waste to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen--two problems solved at one time.

I can't believe any American making less than 250k a year would vote republican. As for the democrats, the only time they look good is when they are compared to republicans. Newt Gingrich is a disturbed little troll. Until the republicans chose Reagan and then Bush the younger, I never would have thought they could be taken in by such obvious morons. But now, I wouldn't be surprised if the repubs were persuaded to elect Charles Manson for President. Seriously, after the thugs they've elected twice in the name of Jesus, who knows what they're capable of?
