ABC News' Jon Garcia and Steven Portnoy report: The White House announced Thursday that Jenna Bush, daughter of President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush and fraternal twin to sister Barbara, is engaged to be married.

No wedding date has been set yet, according to Mrs. Bush's press secretary Sally McDonough.

The White House announced the engagement in a brief written statement to the media.

"President and Mrs. George W. Bush are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Jenna Bush, to Mr. Henry Hager, son of the Honorable and Mrs. John H. Hager of Richmond, Virginia," read the statement.

"Miss Bush and Mr. Hager became engaged Wednesday, August 15, 2007," the brief announcement read.

The White House was characteristically quiet about the First Daughter's engagement, but Mrs. Bush's press secretary confirmed they were engaged in Maine and doesn't know if Mr. Hager, 29, asked the President for his permission or blessing.

Hager is scheduled to enter his second year at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. He is the son former Virginia Lt Gov John Hager, who was only recently appointed to head the Virginia Republican Party.

The elder Hager also served under the current President Bush in the US Department of Education.

"The President and First Lady are very pleased," McDonough said in a phone interview, but politely sidestepped detail questions.

In a February, 2005 appearance on GMA, a few weeks after the Washington Post's Reliable Source first reported the relationship, Laura Bush told Charlie Gibson:

"This is not a serious boyfriend. I hate to, I have to be the one to say it on television, but he's a very nice young man."

Great! They both are republicans and belong to honorable families. Hopefully will last together forever.

All of you should be very ashamed of your negative comments. Very trashy and unbecoming. Where are your manners?

Reading your comments, what has caused us to be such cynical Americans? Have we forgotten about 9/11 and what it means to be supportive of each other and our country? It does not matter if we are Republic, Democrat or other - we are one nation of people who should support and love each other and stop making rude comments about someone you don't even know!! Some of you make me ashamed!!

Lay off the kid's. They can not help what their parents do.

President Hagar has a nice ring to it. Is this announcement designed to deflect from a Wall Street in meltdown, $30 billion to Israel, 500 dead in Iraq. If so it won't work

What happened to her Argentinian boyfriend? You know, the one she spent Christmas with - this past Christmas. That wasn't that long ago and now she's engaged to the fortunate son of connected politician? This all looks suspect. The Bush cabal does nothing without it being politically motivated. I doubt this event is any different. Perhaps they hoped it would help her soon-to-be book sales along with aiding her father by distracting from the messes he brings on everyday.

Shame on us? One rich powerful family marries into another rich powerful family and you expect the rest of us to do what? offer congratulations? rich priviledged white kids getting married and producing another heir to the throne doesn't fill me heart with anything warm or fuzzy...

Mommadona, after researching what an oliogarchic despot is, I concur. Thank you for challenging my vocabulary. :)

I cannot believe all these comments from these jealous democrats. Democrats have been so jealous of George Bush ever since he has been in office that they are green with envy & I mean EVERY ONE.
