Mrs. Obama Crosses Pond for Cash
August 31, 2007 10:03 AM
ABC News' Jonathan Greenberger Reports: John Kennedy said he was the man who accompanied his wife, Jacqueline, to Paris, but it seems in this campaign potential first ladies are going it alone.
Michelle Obama, aspiring first lady and wife of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., will travel to London in mid-October to attend two fundraisers in support of her husband's presidential bid.
While it's not entirely unusual for candidates to seek support from Americans abroad (Diana Kerry, the younger sister of Sen. John Kerry, served as Chair of Americans Overseas for Kerry in 2004), it's not all that often that candidates or their spouses actually travel across the pond to enrich their campaign coffers.
There is no prohibition against it, however, as long as the people giving money certify they are "not a foreign national who lacks permanent resident status in the United States."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton says the scheduled fundraisers are simply a reflection of the support Obama receives from around the world.
"Given the enthusiasm from Americans abroad, this is an opportunity for those folks to be a part of this effort," says Burton.
The fundraisers are scheduled for the 5-star Landmark Hotel in central London on Monday, Oct. 15.
According to the invitation, the main reception is at 7:00 pm, but bundlers who raise $23,000 from friends and family will receive an additional invitation to a VIP Pre-Reception.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Mrs. Obama Crosses Pond for Cash:
Does anyone else see the problem with pandering for cash in foreign nations? Kind of has to do with loyalty. The Osama's ain't all they are cracked up to be. As much as I hate Hillary, she is definitely the lesser evil of the two.

I wonder how the Pakistani community will welcome Obama. The future invader of their country.

Mrs. Obama needs to stay home. These folks giving the cash to her in England are wasting their money and she is wasting her time. Obama is never going to win anything. He is so far removed from the race that you would think if a person had any intelliggence at all he would get out of the race and quit taking peoples money! But egotism and pride get in the way! The man hasn't got it, can't manage a ice cream stand much less be a Senator or President! I am so amazed that people will vote for most anything these days. If you can smile, shake hands and speak well you can be a Presdient, Huh????

Poor little Drudgies. By the time Nov 08 rolls around, there won't be a single Republican who hasn't been caught in lewd behavior, taking bribes, or abused children. For a party that screams so loudly about values, you sure are lacking in them. Some example you set for our children.

A Clinton? Lesser evil?
I don't like politicians getting money from overseas, but I dislike politicians getting money from criminals even less.

Another smart move by the Obama's. The enthusiam he generates worldwide is refreshing. Senator Obama will be a great president. Being affable is a good thing.

Little Austin Travis does not evidently know of the crooks running the Democrat party now in power. There is not room on this site to list all the crooked democrats, but a few would not hurt. We have Jefferson with the freezer bribe money. We have the scummy money grubbers for Hillary now first coming to light. We have a practicing homo Rangle who had a prostitution ring operating from his apartment. And every one is upset over Craig merely charged for an alleged "SIGNAL". A charge he knew would be blown all over the liberal news of ABC, NBC,CBS and CNN. Pleading guilty to a lesser charge would make sense. The democrats however have people like Travis Austin to laud and praise the democrat misdeeds and make excuses why they should stay in office and get away with more crooked activity all with the help of the MEDIA. ATTACK, ATTACK, that is all the democrats can do. 600 plus investigations and nothing done for the people. HIDE, HIDE any allegations of misdeeds of the democrats.

Is it possible that Mrs. Oboma will be selling some missle secrets for campaign cash like Clinton did with the Chinese army. It would be a terrible tragedy if she gave some American secret to the Pakistani rebels for campaign cash. Is that possible? Selling secrets happened once before. She and her husband are democrats like Clinton. I think we better watch out.

Lets comapare the parties
Republicans:Mark Foley, sent e-mails to Pages - NO PHYSICAL CONTACT. Was forced out by HIS PARTY
Sen. Craig - Immediate action from Republican leaders -strip him of Committee assignments and Ask him to resign.
Democrat: Gary Studds, HAD sex with Pages - Given several standing ovations from House Democrats.
Barney Frank - Homosexual prostitution ring run out of his appartment. Still serves as a Leader in the Democrat House.
WHICH PARTY DO YOU ENDORSE? WHICH PARTY DO YOU WANT TO REPRESENT YOU?
NOT A DIFFICULT DECISION FOR ME.
Posted by: Marv | Aug 31, 2007 11:09:31 AM
Jake, I think you meant to whine to me, not your fellow Drudgie, Austin. And I think you meant Barney Frank, not Rangel. So besides being all confused, all your whining doesn't change the fact that your party is lost. You can bring up the ONE corruption investigation against the Democrats, or decades old sex scandals all you want. The fact is, your Party's major campaign slogan revolves around Republicans having higher values than Democrats. Now your voters are seeing that is untrue and will stay home on election day. Our voters are being energized watching the GOP provide so much material for Leno/Letterman. Pretty soon, the GOP will have less power than the Green Party.

Chris, what you really have is a bunch of crooked people and gay people who are hiding behind the Republican face. I, for one am starting to wonder if they
are plants to take down the Republican party???
Also, if there is a gay in the Democrat party he or she is lauded. If there is a gay HIDING in the Republican party the person is a hack, a criminal, a pervert. Why the double standard for gays??????
The Republican party has the Log Cabin Repulicans (if I remember right), so why would a gay hide? And don't give me that crap about discrimination. Barney Frank is the poster boy for how far the envelope can get pushed.
p.s. I am anticipating harsh words coming my way through cyberspace!

RTFA The American Presidency is not for sale overseas. This visit is for US citizens and legal resident aliens living overseas. I have worked overseas several times for US companies and have wanted to continue my involvement in the political process. I am glad to see this kind of outreach.

why are there so many idiots posting on this site? THEY CAN ONLY ACCEPT MONEY FROM AMERICANS LIVING ABROAD. They can't take money from people who are not American Citizens. So Pakistanis and Saudis and anyone else you want to talk about won't be handing Michelle Obama a check. If you give these idiots half a reason to post something ignorant and hateful they will always jump on the opportunity. If we can keep the conversation to people who actually have something of value to offer we would all be better off.
Posted by: waleeg | Aug 31, 2007 11:26:10 AM
Wow... Either some of you guys posting here have a remedial reading level, or they're purposely trying to spin it as a anti-American thingy. Why don't you read the article and you'll see this is to get Americans abroad involved with the political process. They vote too!!
Don't think for a minute that the Bin Ladins didn't support their friend (thru the Carylyle Group) Bush Sr or his son. Being in the construction business, they made a lot of money on this war.
See, I can spin stuff too. And it's more believable because the connection between the Bin ladins and Bush family does exist.
Posted by: Roy | Aug 31, 2007 11:32:53 AM
Bridget, I don't care if a Republican is gay. That won't make me more or less likely to vote for him. It's not the Democrats that brand homosexuals as criminals or perverts. The reason Republicans get hurt is because their hypocrisy gets exposed, and a gay Republican damages their image in the minds of the GOP base. The Log Cabin Republicans are an extreme minority. A gay Republican has the same effect as a Pro-Bush Democrat, it makes the respective base less likely to turn out for them. If Republicans supported gay rights, being a gay Republican wouldn't be scandalous.

I have always thought that most Americans irrestpective of their up-bringing, childhood, orientation and education are fairly rational in their thinking and understanding of the life around them, but that appear to be an illusion.
When I read comments from some people ., I usually wonder the sort of brain they have inside their skull. But, I have come to understand that it's people like these who lack basic common-sense and rational reasoning that keep drawing America backward.
I think it does not require an explanation to know that a child who sits on top of his father's baloon and claim to be taller than him is in for a very hard time.
Posted by: Moses | Aug 31, 2007 11:43:14 AM
Maybe this will clear things up for you folks out there who are enraged that an American citizen living abroad wants to donate money:
These are the same people who have the right to VOTE absentee. These might be people who are STATIONED overseas in our fine military! They can be celebrities who have a second home.
Stop fretting about November 2008 in August 2007. I say all these politicians should slow down. This election cycle started too early. By the time the election rolls around everyone will be so dam tired of all the mud slinging and corruption, both parties might stay home and give up on voting.

It's Us Vs Them. Them being our Government. The Government that is stripping our liberties, preparing to microchip us, joining into illegal compacts (North American Union, google or yahoo search it - the mainstream press won't tell you about the NAU or the AMERO - the currency system that is getting set to replace American Dollars within the next five to ten years), A government that is run by private Banking concerns and small groups of powerful men.
A government that has willfully allowed our currency and economic system to become near to worthless due to the illegal Federal Reserve structure.
WAKE UP. It aint about money here or there.
All of our economies are afloat on a raft of drug profits and Credit/DEBT we will never pull ourselves from under.
That structure will sink soon.

Just another Rockefeller controlled CFR Member wishing to finish the destruction of the US Constitution. Well, I found some old info that might help convince a few of you here that there really is a CFR Conspiracy to destroy the US Constitution, "We are about to hear a man tell us that the major tax exempt foundations have been operating to promote a hidden agenda. That agenda has nothing to do with the surface appearance of charity, good works or philanthropy. The real objective has been to influence American educational institutions and to control foreign policy agencies of the Federal Gov. The purpose of the control has been to condition Americans to accept the creation of world government. That government is to be based on the principle of collectivism, which is another way of saying socialism - and, it is to be ruled from behind the scenes by those same interests which control the tax-exempt foundations."
Norman Dodd was the staff director of the Congressional Special Committee to investigate tax-exempt foundations. Dodd was granted access to the 50 years of minutes from the Carnegie Foundation which, along with the Rockefeller Foundation, is the driving force behind the Council on Foreign Relations. The CFR is, at present, controlling our government. This is not ''Hearsay'', these are documented Congressional records.

It doesn't matter who goes overseas. The fact of the matter is that most of us Republicans are ecstatic about the prospect of a Shrillary Democratic candidacy (which undoubtedly will be the case), no matter what the hospital administrator wife of Osama does. Clinton will save the GOP. All the bitter, whiny, paranoid, pseudointellectual hypocrites on the loony left know this, and they are scared to death. Hence all the idiotic braying and insults from the lefties on this sight. Whining, sour grapes, and insults is all the adle-brained crybaby "Victimcrats" know how to do. That won't win them the presidency in 08 when they have a known corrupt candidate as thier choice.

It will never cease to amaze me how so-called "adults" can display such ignorance! Anyone with an IQ of a two-year old should know that foreigners cannot contribute to the American political system. However, Americans living abroad have every bit as much right (and responsibilty) to participate in our political process as do those of you who are obvilously playing with something less than a full deck. People such as Jack Carter who, in a previous post mentioned something about "Negroes". I wonder if he's racist or simply more ignorant than the rest of you who seem not to know the meaning of "American National".

I do not support the man, or his party, but there is nothing wrong with his wife going over there and raising money if the money is coming from Americans. More power to them. It's amazing how moronic people can be with these posts. It doesn't matter what the article is about, but if they leave a comments section open you read the same garbage. The whole election is scary. Obama is rumored to have muslin ties, this country is facing continuous reign by the Bush/Clinton families (28 years if Hilary wins) and a lackluster list of posibilities from both parties. There are many good people who would make a great President but they won't run because they don't want their personal lives as well as their families dredged through the mud. I can't blame them. So that leaves us with only those who have spent a lifetime preparing to hold a political office to pick from...that thought is depressing. We need someone in office who understands the people who live in this great nation...not someone who lives to run this nation.
Posted by: Just thinking | Aug 31, 2007 1:42:46 PM

Posted by: Chip M Anderson | Aug 31, 2007 1:50:02 PM
Let's stop with the name calling, ok? We did read the article. We are skeptical that all the money that is donated will have been contributed by Americans with a legal right to do so.
If you wonder why we are skeptical, look at the current news on the Hillary fundraising imbroglio in California. Tell me, do you believe those people living in that house donated their own money to Hillary?
Some say Bush is tail to the Saudi's dog. Could be, I don't think any of these people are really looking out for my interests ahead of their own. It helps to keep them under close scrutiny and on a short leash.

It constantly amazes me to see how polarized the two major parties have managed to make the US. As long as the electorate keeps chasing their own tails, nothing will ever change. Here we have a serious lightweight candidate whose wife is going abroad to raise money, which is simultaneously the dumbest and most desperate thing a candidate could do. Then we have some Craig supporters defending his disgusting actions. Then the Democrat folks jump in with more attacks on other Republican transgressors, while failing to realize that many of their own have serious stains on their records as well. Folks, it's time for all of us to wake up, stop getting into pissing contests on blogs and realize that neither of the major political parties have any of our best interests at heart. Sadly, I cannot even recommend someone like Ron Paul as a serious alternative since he's basically just straddling the hot button issues that both major parties try to avoid and even if elected could never accomplish anything because of the lock that the two major parties still have on the rest of the political meat grinder. Sadly, we're in a spot where if we as the electorate don;t begin to take on serious activist measures to fix the political system, the phrase "Late Great America" will become reality within 30 years. And there's no amount of "My party is great...you party sucks" traditional party loyalty that can help to fix the problem. Doing such things is only wasting enormous amounts of activist energy, which is precisely what the major parties hope you'll keep doing. Please, please, please, get off you *sses and take some real action in the real world and stop wasting time parroting the taking points of whichever major party you've decided to carry the water for. The future of America is in your hands, and neither of the major parties has any of your best interests at heart, continuing to support them like so many in the blogosphere do only seals our fate.

Regardless of whether it is the Obama, Clinton, Gulliani, Thompson or whatever campaign, I find this highly disturbing.
It is simply too easy to disguise these off-shore contributions.
As we have seen with Hsu and with Tony Rezko (a major early Obama supporter who helped fund the Obama family's home purchase as well as possibly helping Mrs. Obama obtain a lucrative Board seat at TreeHouse Foods, is a naturalized citizen born in Syria and now under Federal indictment for loan fraud) as well as with several GOP'rs in the past, there are terrible temptations and fertile ground to generate divided loyalites and incentives to engage in corrupt deals with corrupt people.

But just remember it was the Democrats during the 2000 election that tried to keep military votes from being counted. Google it. Personally I believe that neither of the two party's we have now should be trusted. It is the RIGHT of the CITIZENS to grant power to the government, not the government to grant us rights.

Remember people, The USA is not alone in the world. Other countries have a right to help decide who will be the leader of the only superpower. And since most people in the world are smarter than Americans, they will certainly pick either Hillary or Obama or both. The only two real leaders in the Western hemisphere are already endorsing them. And with Chavez' oil money and Castro's political wisdom, there is no way the republicans will win again. Get over it people. Your nationalistic xenophobia is pointless. It's one world.

Not an Obama fan, but someone commented that there aren't that many Americans in England. When I lived there from '02 to '04, word was there were ~250K Americans, most pure business ex-pats who make a good bit of money.
I was disappointed to be ignored by the Republican congress (which I voted for) when Grassley et al tried to remove the Ex-pat exemption (which prevents double taxation for the first $80K). I think its good that politicians don't forget about some of the best and brightest overseas.

I have always thought that most Americans irrestpective of their up-bringing, childhood, orientation and education are fairly rational in their thinking and understanding of the life around them, but that appear to be an illusion.
When I read comments from people here called human beings, I usually wonder the sort of brain they have inside their skull. But, I have come to understand that it's people like these who lack basic common-sense and rational reasoning that keep drawing America backward.
I think it does not require an explanation to know that a child who sits on top of his father's baloon and claim to be taller than him is in for a very hard time.

American's living overseas are still american's. they can vote and contribute to their candidate. Remember, all our soldiers station abroad are overseas, as well.
Let everyone vote for and support the candidate of their choice. there is no doubt that Obama will improve our image overseas and will be the best candidate to enlist the needed international cooperation that can defeat global terrorism.

I actually would really, really like to see violence avoided. However, if folks don't wake up to how much the major parties have put us against each other to short circuit all of our own well intended efforts, I fear that an American Revolution 2.0 will have to be the ultimate outcome. The reality is that the common American doesn't have single ally from either national party at this point.
As an example, the Republicans screwed up just about everything that they could do in the last 12 years of their and the the Democrats came in, swept by a popular revolt and have failed to do anything that they promised, including fix anything at all in Iraq. Even their own folks rate them with a terrible approval rating, yet they continue to be in power, doing nothing at all for the regular guy. In a company, if us regular folks behaved that way, we'd be fired, downsized, outsourced, even if we had the strongest union in the world protecting our redundant position int eh company What does it take to wake the electorate up?!?! The folks that run our country don't give a hoot about any of us. Do we want to continue to visit Drudge Report and DailyKOS and hope for the best or do we want to take our unlimited collective energy and make a real, lasting change?
I'm sure that the founding fathers didn't think that it would take the American Revolution (1.0) to get the results they were seeking back in the day in Boston. But when the time came and they knew that there were no further options, they did what had to be done.
However, we're dangerously close to the same kind of flashpoint that they experienced in the 1770s. If the national lawmakers don't have some sort of epiphany, they will only continue to fuel the fire and bring an end to America as it should be.
It's not about being a Republican or being a Democrat like they'd like to define the discussion, it's about being a True American.
And if the major parties continue to focus all their efforts on opinion polls that drive the next elections rather than the long run future of our republic, I hope the end will be very swift and painful for them.
For the rest of us, we MUST quickly find common ground and decide that we're done with being polarized and pandered to by the parties that once served our very needs. Common ground WILL NOT be found be any of our modern political candidates, no matter what they claim. They've abandoned us by the side of the road, do we want to accept that or decide to take back power and shape our own future?
Politics in the modern era can indeed be different but if we continue to let the talking points (ie, the worthless time wasting minutiae) of the major parties drive the discussion and waste all of our efforts, we deserve the outcome that's they've already destined for all of us.
Time to choose folks, do we want to make a real difference or be "comfortable" one upping each other in the blogosphere?!?! If you decide blogging is your only outlet, then you deserve what you get. It's High Time to hold all their feet to the fire and build the future of America before it's all taken away from us.

You can always count on a drudge link to bring in the worst possible kind of human beings to a discussion.

Hahaha,
Jim is just more cannon fodder for the major political parties.
Well done Jim!

The very sad thing about our form of government (which, for those of you schooled in government schools, is NOT a democracy) is that it directly reflects the intelligence level of it's voters...the "average" american is a moron.

If Sen. Obama was white he would be a second tier candidate with people questioning his lack of experience, his puzzling statements (attack Pakistan anyone?) and his general lack of gravitas. His skin color gives him a pass on all of that because Democrats need to pander but the country at large doesn't have that same obligation and as the camapign heats up the Senator's deficits will also continue to rise.

I am constantly amazed by the pathetic attacks on drudge by the silly liberals who claim to be intelligent. You do realize that drudge links to, for the most part, mainstream sources and as I recall was rated by UCLA school of journalism (a liberal school, without a doubt) as being one of the most NON-PARTISAN news sources... yet you silly liberals just keep flapping your gums like you have some kind of a clue.
MiddleClass - you are just about dead on in as far as the sorry sacks that we have foolishly allowed to 'lead' us (regardless of party) could care less about us and have spent the better part of the last 30 years dividing this country.
The only real answer is to vote out every single incumbent, period! Start fresh in both the house and the senate. The president has very little real power, it's Congress and THEY ARE THE PROBLEM!
Posted by: DJH | Aug 31, 2007 5:14:28 PM
My father worked for the State Department and the CIA, and we spent quite a bit of my childhood overseas. Just because we didn't live in the US didn't make us any less of a citizen. Good for Mrs. Obama.
And the rest of you??
Posted by: Theresa | Aug 31, 2007 5:17:30 PM
Oh, and I forgot...
Those of you supporting Obama and his wife's trip across the sea, are you not at all familiar with all of the money being poured into campaign coffers from non-US sources? Anyone, ANYONE who does a simple search going back through the last 8-10 election cycles could easily find the information. Now, of course they're going to say they are holding fund raisers for Americans abroad but please don't be so naive as to think foriegn money won't be collected. Both partys do it and to claim that 'they' are above it is foolish.
Obama is an empty suit with no chance of winning, Hillary is just a power hungry, un-qualified, poor excuse for a candidate... and having said that, you'll notice that Republicans/conservatives aren't too thrilled with our choices either. Most presidential elections are the lessor of two evils, this election will be more of the same only this time we have quite possibly the worse set of potential candidates in the history of our country. As someone mentioned above, the good people, the people who would actually represent you and I will not run because the mainstream media and the other candidates will drag up every single piece of garbage and make up a bunch more. Why put your family through the embarrassment of some mistakes you made when you were 18, 22, etc being aired in the public.
I am constantly amazed by these people who jump on a candidates bandwagon and defend them so vehemently and vigorously, they are the truly naive and foolish amongst us.

I totally agree with you. "Throw all the bums out" is the only way to go. And it's certainly a great rallying call. Either that works or things continue to fester until the point at which Revolution (2.0) is the only other choice.
Admittedly, I'd rather not have to even think about Revolution(2.0) but the current state of political affairs leaves the American electorate completely unrepresented. I only hope that something changes quickly so we can get to the path to a solution rather than continue to fester until Revolution (2.0) is the only options. The clock is ticking for all patriotic Americans.....

MiddleClass, I assume you're referring to why our country went to Hell in a handbasket so quickly after the last "election", & the "average" American morons who elected him, hmmmm?
Obama's wife going overseas for contributions. Why? Don't they have the address to send contri's to from over there?
Isn't ANYONE more than a little offended that some newbie like Obama would even ATTEMPT to run our country?
Thanks for offering, but no thanks.
Besides, ALL he is, is Operah's little toy power play for the White House, & NOTHING more.
Wake up.

yea obama:....group. listen, if brain-dead bush can be president, then anyone can.
dont forget that bush didnt even have experience when he lived in texass. everthing he did there was like everything else they do in tijuana-mexico (taco/burrito/etc) so far, he hasn't had any pain from what he has caused the american people, because he doesnt have a brain to have pain.
anyone can be president, expecially if they have good men like rumsfield/cheny/rove. they do all the thinking for the white house.......
