Paul's army invades Straw Poll

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports: Congressman Ron Paul's is in the Republican Party, but he's really more of a strict libertarian. Some of the more dyed in the wool Republicans at the Iowa Straw Poll aren't sure how to deal with Paul or his small army of mostly young, scruffy supporters.

For instance, as the legion of supporters bussed to Ames by the front-running and financially flush Mitt Romney lined into the Hilton Coliseum, the venue at Iowa State where candidates were giving their speeches to Iowa Republicans, Paul's supporters stood in front of the door, creating a bit of a pedestrian traffic jam and started an impromptu rally, complete with bull horn, shouts of "Ron Paul" and two men with fife and drum (get it? Paul is a "Constitutionalist").

Inside the Coliseum, when straw poll MC and conservative commentator Laura Ingraham, an ardent supporter of the Iraq War, announced Paul, who thinks the troops should "just come home" and his supporters, she called them the "Peace Train" and sounded mildly insulting about it.

But Paul told the crowd that the Republican party has lost its way. "Its not so long ago that the Republican party stood for getting rid of the Department of Education and the Department of Energy," he said. "Where are we on that?" he asked.

In the course of his speech to the crowd, Paul talked about cutting big government. And he means it. He told voters he would do away with the Federal Reserve and pointed to economic problems being caused by defaulting home loans as a reason to do away with the federal reserve, "stop printing paper money out of thin air" and return to gold and silver as monetary standards.

Paul said he wants the military to provide for defense and nothing more. Today's speech added a twist to his oft-repeated platform to disengage immediately from Iraq when he invoked the Minneapolis bridge collapse.

"Bridges in this country are falling down," he told the crowd. "You pay to blow down bridges in Iraq, hen you pay to rebuild them, and our bridges are falling down here!" Thunderous applause.

He also got a standing ovation when he closed his speech by succinctly laying out what a Paul administration would look like.

"I do not want to run your life, your family, or your religious beliefs. I do not want to run the economy and I don’t want to police the world. I don’t know how and it doesn’t work."

very well written article.

I had never heard of Ron Paul before but after seeing his speech today, I just made a quick search and found out a lot more about him.

I thought his speech was the best of all the other candidates.

I am very intrigued by this guy. I don't think I've ever heard a politician be so up front about issues before. I'm undecided - one of the ones fed up with both parties - but will be keeping my eye on Ron Paul.

Go Ron Paul!

My heart is out to his wife, praying for a full recovery and many years in the White House.

We pray for the speedy recovery of Ms. Paul, and she and Dr. Paul are in our thoughts and prayers.

By the way, Laura Ingraham must be going intellectually vapid. It is astounding someone who is supposed to be a Republican, would be so against the Paul supporters wish that we simply following the Constitution's directive that in order to go to war, it must be declared by the Congress of the United States.

Derisively calling Ron Paul supporters the "peace train" in a sarcastic tone includes me, a 53 Year Old Texas Republican Party Delegate, who will be voting for Dr. Paul in the upcoming Texas Straw Poll Voter on Sept. 1st in Fort Worth.

I recall saying prayers for Ms. Ingraham when she was physically ill a few years back when I used to listen to her radio program sipping the the G.W. Bush Cool Aid. She became so hypocritical and mean spirited, I quit listening about a year and a half ago.

I will continue to pray for her though, in hopes her heart and mind can heal also.

But for now, my prayers are with Ms. Paul and I hope she and Dr. Paul are celebrating an overwhelming victory tonight in the Ames Straw poll.

America sure needs them in the White House. Because Dr. Paul's dedication that our Nation return to following the Constituion's structure of it being Supreme Law of the Land, rather than Executive Fiat, is the only thing that can defeat the "North American Union Organizers" who are bent on turning our country into a third world hell hole.

Go Dr. Paul, and God bless you and Mrs. Paul.

PaulBots are perhaps the most annoying people on the planet. a group of internet nerds, 9/11 truthers, etc who have probably never left their parents' basements.

Ron Paul is campaigning on some principles that speak to just how far this country has drifted - he wants to restore the constitution that has been pulled apart and dismantled by this current administration.

We need a candidate like Paul who doesn't represent more of the same corrupt big government.

Go Dr. Paul!

What a man who is able to swing my idea of policy of USA.

I thought all candidates were identical, But Dr. Paul you made me think again.

I used to love people of USA & hate their politicians at same time.
But now I should wait till see Dr. Paul in white house to see the Justice in the world.

God bless Dr.Paul

While I do not know what a "aulBot" is, there are some diehard crazies who support RON PAUL, but he is anything but extreme and you can't really expect him to be responsible for what some supporter of his might dream up. I find his philosophy a very attractive one. When you have kids, you automatically think about the debt that you are laying on their heads every day. And, you are also extremely concerned about the erosion of civil liberties and the constant migration of wealth into the hands of fewer and fewer elites as a result of a corrupt monetary system. I loath what is happening in this country and I want to go back to at time when government was a necessary evil enacted to ensure protection of liberties as opposed to the oppressive master and extortionist
that it has become today. I'm casting my vote for RON PAUL.

One would hope that in the land of the free... home of the brave, we would have the foresight to elect a person who believes in the document they all swear to defend. Go Ron Go and my regards to Dr.No THE only sane congressman!!! CBottomEnd123

I'm liking Ron Paul more everytime I hear him speak. Everything he says makes sense, just like it did in the days of our founding fathers. I think he's one of them, reincarnated. The only way to get smaller, less intrusive, less spendtrift government is through Ron Paul's plan to recalibrate America by bringing us back to the U.S. Constitution. Right now we're ruled by the judiciary and by executive orders. We're totally out of order. I hope he wins and I hope we end up with a congress that meets for six months out of the year and the rest of the time the laymen (no lawyers allowed) go home and work at real jobs.

Hey Carol!! Everyone here in Marion County Florida wish you all the best and a speedy recovery!

Look to independent news sights for news on Ron Paul. The mainstream media heavily edits everything to do with this man. Prison Planet and infowars are some of the better ones.

If we make it to next years election Dr. Paul has my vote!

The scruffy young reference was degrading. Ron Paul has a big tent and all kinds of people finding thier way to him even though the mainstream tries to shut him out. The news outlet that covers him most will get the most traffic. Right now thats the web.
You listen to Ron Paul and you just know he's telling the truth. His message is Freedom and Individual Liberty. It seems these principles still burn in American hearts, no matter how apathectic we have become. Ron Paul is an apathy eraser and a man I can vote for AND work for!

BYRON WOLF: "his small army of mostly young, scruffy supporters."

Funny, in watching several videos, I saw a lot of folks in their 30's, 40's, 50's, etc. Husbands and wives, some with their children.....none that looked "scruffy."

GERRY CONNOR: "PaulBots are perhaps the most annoying people on the planet. a group of internet nerds, 9/11 truthers, etc who have probably never left their parents' basements."

I rather resent that description! I am a conservative republican, college grad, & retired professional. And if you think I am alone in my likes of Ron Paul, you are greatly mistaken!
