Romney Takes Victory Lap, Chides Rivals
August 12, 2007 10:29 AM
ABC News Tahman Bradley Reports: Former Gov. Mitt Romney R-Mass., said his victory in Saturday's non-binding Iowa Republican Party Straw Poll in no less significant because his leading Republican '08 rivals Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and yet-to-be announced candidate Fred Thompson chose not to compete in the contest.
Appearing on "Fox News Sunday" after winning the straw poll with 31.5 percent of the vote, Romney sent an elbow in the direction of his rivals. "I think if they felt they could have won, they'd been here. The reason they weren't here was an indication of their strength in Iowa," Romney said.
"And if you can't compete in the heartland, if you can't compete in Iowa, in August, how you going to compete in January when the caucuses are held? And how are you going to compete in November of '08," he added.
Iowa is scheduled to hold the nation's first presidential caucus in 2008.
Romney echoed Democratic Senator of New York Hillary Clinton 's criticism of Barack Obama for saying he would use military force against Al Qaeda forces hiding in Pakistan if President Perez Musharraf did not move against them first.
"He said things you simply do not say on the international stage," Romney said of the Illinois Senator. "In a place like Pakistan, you make sure that you don't say things that can be misinterpreted and misused and that was what his error was."
Asked about a report that he tied his Irish Setter Seamus to the roof of a station wagon during a 1983 family vacation, Romney said the dog climbed up on the roof of the car all by himself because he liked it. He also added that he didn't know strapping a dog to the roof of a car may have violated Massachusetts law.
Romney embarks on a 4 day, 10 state tour on Monday as he tries to further introduce himself to Republican voters across the country in an effort to boost up his national poll standing.

What a hypocrite Mitt Romney is, he says that the three that didn't go to Iowa knew they would lose...and he is skipping the Townhall.com Texas Straw poll over labor day weekend, is this because he thinks he can't win? He needs to answer why he is a hypocrite?

This is such a joke. It's a straw vote and people are paid to show up! Hello! Check out how many millions Romney put into this meaningless event. Why can't the media do it's job? This guy bought a win in a meaningless straw poll. Heven help us if this flip-flopping Neo-con gets into office.

Romney is a winner. He does not take on any challenge expecting to lose. He reversed the direction of the 2002 Winter Olympics and turned it into an organizational masterpiece - successful by any measure! America needs that kind of leadership.

This guy's scary. First he's for abortion then against, for gay rights then against, then wins a straw poll in the heart of the Bible belt, known for expulsion of the "cult" Mormon's in the mid 1800's. The wife seems to be no better, donating to Planned Parenthood, but can't remember, and has changed her views now as well as Mitt. Seems like their views and principles change according to whatever group they're seeking to placate at the time.

So what if he spent x amount of money at the straw poll? He raised that much by his leadership and character. I was in Utah for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and I was here in Iowa during the straw poll. I've seen what he can do and what he says. With Romney's strength and values, this nation can be rich, powerful, and respected in the world again.

Mitt Romney has been consistently pro-life in his actions and personal belief. I trust his change in political view based on his actions and his word. Conservatives should recognize the right of a state to decide its laws. Instead of name-calling, skeptics should push him on what he would do if Roe v Wade is overturned and states vote to have liberal abortion laws. We would then learn when his respect for state laws takes precedence over his personal moral and political views. We also need to see if we can develop deterrents in the law other than the threat of jail.

Mitt is the quintessential "plastic politician" - the kind who is utterly devoid of originality and panders to anyone who will listen. At the Iowa Debate (read, "Serial Press Conference"), Romney had a chance to refute Brownback's points, but couldn't. He's skipping the so-called "YouTube debate" because he dislikes the format. I might dislike it to if I were him and I had to face innovative, hard questions from "We the People" rather than the same questions from the Brunch with the Living Dead crowd.

Slick Mitt will never get my vote! NO ONE for SHAMNESTY will. And have no doubt, he IS for SHAMNESTY. He flip-flopped on the issue AFTER the debates started. Anyone willing to sell the U.S. down the river to Mexico, doesn't deserve to be president.
