Romney Attacks "Sanctuary Cities"
August 21, 2007 12:16 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart reports: Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney today released a new radio ad targeting so-called "sanctuary cities."
"That's the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies," the ad claims, "Sanctuary cities become magnets that encourage illegal immigration and undermine secure borders."
Romney's ad debuts after federal officials announced that two men suspected of killing three people in a Newark schoolyard were in the United States illegally.
The ad, which is airing in Iowa and New Hampshire, is merely the latest step in the debate between Romney and fellow Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani that began two weeks ago. Romney accused New York City of being the "poster child for sanctuary cities" under Giuliani. Giuliani fired back, arguing crime rates dropped dramatically during his time as Mayor. The ensuing debate has led to suggestions that immigration could drive a wedge issue in the Republican party.

You can't blame Mayor Booker for something that has been going on for years and years. This was going on before the young man was even born. I am truely sadden by the shootings of the four young college students, only later to loose three of them to violence. But as the parent who came close to loosing both of his children, said, the communities also has to take some responsability for where you live. Schools that have these cameras on the premises should make sure that the equipment is working, if not then the Borad of Education should be held partly responsible. If the cameras were not working at night then the cameras wern't working while you children were in school for the summer programs. For those who wish to live and work in the United States, must have all proper papers before entering. Booker just took office, you can't exspect the man to clearn up years of mess.

Playing the Hate Card. It was played with regard to gay marriage in the last presidential election, and the Hate Card is being played again -- but this time I'm afraid both parties will be shuffling and dealing.

Why doesn't Mitt attack Sen. Hatch for wanting to let the children of illegal aliens attend college for the same amount as residents? Hatch is LDS from Utah? Doesn't having access to resident college fees promote illegal aliens staying here? Who pays? Mitt appears to have a double standard. Why does Mitt treat a senator from Utah different than a mayor of New York. I can't say it's a shared link to Mormon hierarchy. I can understand not wanted to waste a vote on a candidate that will give special preference based on belonging to the same church.

I am a lifelong Democrat, but if any of the current Democratic Party candidates are elected they would just keep the illegal immigration flood gates open.I think that Mitt Romney has found the issue that will make him President. I will vote for my first Republican President ever if he will clean up this immigration mess.

romney and rudy are both unelectable. so if you nominate them you get a super high turnout.

To Roy: Hey Mr. Cut-and-Paste Wikipedia, you missed the 2nd half of the definition of Carpetbagger. If it makes you feel any better, maybe consider her a "Progressive Carpetbagger!" Either way she's not a New Yorker and she is incapabale of leading this country. Look what's done (or not done and maybe that's a good thing) as a New York Senator. All I see is pandering to votes and comparing herself to Harriet Tubman. She won't answer any hypothetical questions in these circus act Democrat debates. Life is not full of guarantees and the people deserve the right to know and the truth about what she would do in a given situation or scenario. Chicken! What a leader she'd make, sheesh. Oh wait that's what she didn't do in the Whitewater land deal case either, tell the truth......

Aiding and abetting an illegal alien in breaking our laws or failing to enforce the law is a felony. Any politician who allowed such practices should be in prison not running for office.

What our Government conveniently ignores is the fact that 14th amendment does not in any way apply to illegal aliens, The intent of the 14th was to make citizens of the slaves along with their children.

Actually, the first settlers in America were illegal aliens. this wasn't their land to occupy and settle in.

I'M HISPANIC -- EVERYTIME YOU SEE THESE PRO-IMMIGRATION RALLIES, IT'S ALL ILLEGALS AND HISPANICS SUPPORTING THEM AND STUPID LIBERAL WHITE PEOPLE WHO DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. MY PEOPLE (MEXICANS) JUST MAKE ME SICK SOMETIMES. I AM VOTING FOR ROMNEY 100% EVEN THOUGH I'M A DEMOCRAT. I'M SICK OF US DEMOCRATS AND BLEEDING HEARTS CRYING FOR THESE PEOPLE. IF YOU LIKE THEM SO MUCH, PLEASE, PLEASE MOVE INTO THEIR DIRTY NEIGHBORHOODS AND PAY FOR ALL THEIR TAXES. WE'LL HAVE A VOTE, PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT THE ILLEGALS HERE DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE. PEOPLE WHO ARE CRYING WITH OPEN HEARTS, AGAIN, PLEASE FORK OUT THE LOOT, AND I MEAN A LOT OF IT, TO KEEP THEM ON THE GRAVY TRAIN!!!

I must agree with Mr. Sanchez. The bleeding hearts know one thing for sure. It is that the illegal immigrants won't be their next door neighbors!! They will be ours. They need to understand they have no right to protest anything here. As much as I love this country I am sickened at what we have become. No one speaks the truth afraid that someone might be offended.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE, THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO SAY THIS ARE MY OWN PEOPLE, MEXICANS, AND STUPID, IGNORANT NON-MEXICANS!! WHY LIE ABOUT IT!>!>!> GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND AND LOOK AROUND AND SEE HOW EVERYTHING AROUND YOU IS COLLAPSING BECAUSE OF THIS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CRISIS. SOMETIMES IT TAKES SOMEBODY WITH SOME BALLS TO TELL IT LIKE IT IS. READ MY LIPS -- NO MORE FREE LUNCH!!

I agree with Mr. Sanchez, but am curious what solutions the pro-immigration people suggest regarding healthcare, education, and taxes. If amnesty is granted, are they suddenly going to be paying taxes? Are they going to be paying for their healthcare bill and for their children to go to school? Where are the solutions if these 12 million illegals are granted amnesty? If they become 'legal' all of a sudden, I don't think they are going to like it as much as they think they will. It costs alot to live here legally!!

This country is one that has laws. It is free because of those laws. I know that some dense people don't understand how laws equate with freedom. To bad for them. They're just stupid. When the rule of law is ignored, anarchy is just around the corner. Don't forget that immigrants have admired this country because of the rule of law. So, find the illegals and send them home. There can be no amnesty. Amnesty rewards illegal behavior. If immigrants what to enter this country, fine! They should do it legally. Immigrants can learn the law of the land, as all our ancestors did. They can PAY TAXES to support the social services they've come to expect. This is not a racial issue. It is a legal, ethical and, therefore, moral issue. If you don't like the existing law, then change it. But the law must be followed. It is the only thing that separates us from anarchy and chaos.

Thank you Al for your comments. It is a good thing coming from a Hispanic. Of course some fellow Hispanics may call you a racist now, too. The term has been so misused, overused, and abused it has now lost its meaning entirely.

Mitt is a bigger fool than even Bush. Romney is the LAST person any self-respecting, Christian conservative should be considering as presidential material. Wake the hell up people and smell your Constitution blowing in the wind because it applies to Christian's too. Soon you won't be allowed to babble about ruling government according to your religion if you don't step back and see the bigger picture.

these illegals hurt the Mexican-American citizens worse than any other group.
Posted by: sancho | Aug 21, 2007 7:03:24 PM
Do you think he would be putting up such a squak if all the illegals were Mormons instead of Catholics?
Posted by: jsilver | Aug 21, 2007 7:05:18 PM
All the talk about illegals being the cause of the high crime rate is being answered in typical beaurocratic nonsense. Some official idiot said that the matter was moot because the rate of crime occurance was about equal between legal residents and illegals. Huh? Well so what?!! If the illegals were not there, then it follows that the crime rate would be half!!???
