Craig Phone Call Fell Into Roll Call's Lap
September 05, 2007 6:42 PM
ABC News' Jacqueline Klingebiel Reports: Roll Call reporter David Ducker says "dumb luck" is how the Capitol Hill publication broke yet another major story connected to Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho.
"It fell into our lap," Drucker told ABC News Political Director David Chalian during a Wednesday appearance on ABC News Now's "Politics Live."
For several weeks, Craig has been calling a particular phone number and hanging up not knowing the phone number belonged to an acquaintance of one of Roll Call's editors. Prior to the Saturday phone call in which Craig discussed his forthcoming press conference as a strategy to rehabilitate his political fortunes, the cell phone owner friendly with Roll Call's editor had identified the person who was hanging up as Craig. When the Idaho Republican ended his practice of hanging up and left a voice mail on Saturday morning, the cell phone's owner gave it to Roll Call.
"What are the odds?" said Drucker, recalling how shocked he was that the voice on the tape belonged to Craig, the three-term senator who found himself last week in the midst of a political scandal for allegations of lewd sexual misconduct in a bathroom at the Minneapolis Airport.
"Yes, Billy, this is Larry Craig calling," Craig said in the voice mail which Roll Call posted to its website on Tuesday. "You can reach me on my cell. Arlen Specter is now willing to come out in my defense, arguing that it appears, by all that he knows, that I've been railroaded and all of that."
Craig's plans are still uncertain. On Tuesday, Craig spokesman Dan Whiting said the senator is "fighting these charges" and may not resign if he is cleared before the end of the month.

The cell phone owner who inadvertently got this voice mail should be ASHAMED. Sure, it's hot-news, but it was wrong for them to share it. The RIGHT thing to do would be to call Mr. Craig and let him know he had called the wrong number. Roll Call should have done the same.
I don't agree with Mr. Craig. I am not a fan of his. BUT where has propriety gone in the United States? Where have right and wrong gone?
Exploiting someone's mistaken message like this is an indicator of where this country is going.
The same people that call "foul" over and over regarding "privacy" and protection of "civil rights" are now airing private voice mail messages to "up" their ratings and discredit and disgrace another human being.
Can anyone else see the hypocrisy?
Shame on us.

While I'm not a Craig- basher, with his dumb luck lately this kinda figures...
