Edwards to Call for More Counterterrorism
September 07, 2007 10:32 AM
ABC's Raelyn Johnson reports: In advance of the 6th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, John Edwards will travel to New York City to say that the U.S. is further away from ridding the planet of terrorism than we were six years ago.
“Today, terrorism is worse in Iraq, and it’s worse around the world,” Edwards will say today in a counterterrorism speech given in New York City. Edwards will appear with 9-11 widow and activist Kristen Breitweiser, a short distance away from ground zero, at Pace University.
Speaking to the recent German terrorist plot where three Islamic militants were arrested for planning massive attacks on America targets, Edwards suggests that the US needs to extend the kind of operations between German and American intelligence that ultimately foiled that plot.
“We saw the promise of a new multilateral approach just a couple of days ago in Germany,” says Edwards. “We must be able to coordinate similar operations throughout the world -- in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and anywhere terrorists would attack.”
The center of Edwards’ speech is focused on a new international counterterrorism organization that he says he would create as president, called the Counterterrorism and Intelligence Treaty Organization. “Every nation has an interest in shutting down terrorism. CITO will create connections between a wide range of nations on terrorism and intelligence, including countries on all continents.” Essentially, Edwards’ policy calls for members to voluntarily share financial, police, customs and immigration intelligence.
In recent weeks Edwards has sought to up his anti-war rhetoric given recent reports on Iraq from the GAO office and and the upcoming report to Congress from Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq. Today, his speech happens to comes as reports of a new Osama Bin Laden tape has emerged in the last 24 hours.
“We need a counterterrorism policy that will actually counter terrorism. That matches 21st century threats with 21st century tactics. That replaces Cold War thinking designed to defeat a single, implacable enemy with new world thinking that can defeat a multi-national, diverse, and often hidden foe.”

Thats the way you do it.The counter to terrorism is cooporation. The US has lost a lot of this ability around the world due to the arrogance of the Bush Administration. No one is ever going to exterminate terrorism. The best that we can do in todays world is to control and minimize it. A new president with the temperment of Edwards would greatly enhance our efforts towards this goal.

very sound logic and reasoning... CITO...I already like the sound of it. Go Edwards!!

Way to go John....another "world" organization that the U.S. would ultimately have to fund, just like the U.N. The fact the German plot was broken up is already an indication that Counter-terrorism is working...its only been 6 years since countries started really focusing on it.

Globalist Edwards might get his wish once the North American Union gets off the ground. These guys won't quit. First this guy talks about mandatory preventative medical physicals under his universal healthcare plan and now this?! This guy needs to stop. He's sounding like Presidente Bush and Commandante Clinton. Again, these people really think we are stupid. There seems to be no different between these neo-cons and liberals. This left/right paradigm has got to stop.

Edwards have good platform except he favors illegal aliens. Nobody gets my vote if they are for illegal aliens.

Ok...This has been done many times before, It sounds good doesn't it ? But the truth of the matter is that most nations that called themselves our allies spy on us. Ae: Israel, Germany, France etc. If you believe is not true then ask those in Federal Prisons today for selling our secrets. So Mr Edward don't try to reinvent the wheel, your speech ,like the rest of your party, are nothing but rethorical crap, even Bin Laden say so !

His counter terrorism policy should be to drop out of the race for President and take the front runners from both parties with him.

This is another serious and substantive response on a serious issue. Why all the name calling and emotionality from the right? Why not consider and discuss the issues?

I bet his hair will be perfect for that speech. He'll spend an hour fussing over himself before.
There's two America's in his mind. The pretty and the poor. And he's one of the pretty.
What a joke this guy is.

John Edwards is the best choice for America. Wise up before another Clinton gets in office.

Edwards is another democrat who will approve and support illegal aliens. Unless the democrats change their position on illegals, their chances for the next election would be tough.

John Edwards is the only candidate in either party putting forth new and specific proposals on a variety of issues, including the costs associated with those proposals. Setting aside Biden's proposals on Irag, all of the other candidates in both parties are running some of the most lame, unimaginatitive campaigns in recent political history. John Edwards is the only candidate in either party with the intellectual energy to lead us into the future.

Has nobody ever heard of Interpol? This organization has been around for decades and does an excellent quiet job without blowing trumpets and horns. The only something new will work is if they have the right to cross borders in pursuit, but even if other countries agree to it America never will.
Do you not realize that the US spies on more of their friends than anybody else. I have seen Americans caught working illegally in both Britain and Canada, and these countries are supposed to be America's closest friends.
As one of your neighbours it scares me to see the quality or lack of it, in your potential leaders for 2008. I know we selected our own jerk in Steven Harper, but we don't have the impact America does on the world. Please find some better people to fill your leadership shoes.
