Giuliani: Back on the Trail Again
September 13, 2007 3:26 AM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: After a somber day spent recognizing the anniversary of 9/11 and unofficially suspending campaign activities, presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, got back to campaigning Wednesday.
Arriving in Akron in a white escalade with the Ohio license plates "BAMA CHK" Giuliani offered one last look back in remembrance of that tragic Tuesday in 2001, "we can’t put 9/11 in our past because its part of our present. September 11th is just as current as what's going on right now in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq."
Giuliani was quick to respond to the news of the week, referencing General Petraeus's testimony on Capitol Hill, and blasting Senator Hillary Clinton’s accusation to the general of the "willing suspension of disbelief."
After saying that Senator Clinton’s questioning was "political venom," to the "Randy and Spiff" radio program in Atlanta, the former mayor explained at a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, "I don’t think she has any right to put his credibility in question and this type of political attack is what’s wrong with America right now. We need statesmanship. We need people who are going to respect each other. "
The mayor then took the opportunity to criticize the leading Democratic contender’s plan for Iraq, "I truly believe if we remain on the offensive that we have a better chance of being safe that if we go back to the policies of appeasement, retreat, and surrender that Obama, Clinton, and Edwards are talking about."
And singled out Senator Barack Obama on the day the Illinois Senator released his Iraq war plan, saying that his plan was one of retreat, "When in the history of war has an army ever been asked to give the timetable of retreat? Makes no sense."
In midst of all the campaigning Mayor Giuliani still managed to have some light-hearted fun. A little shopping was in order as Giuliani made his way through Sam’s Ice Cream Parlor purchasing a scarecrow doll for Halloween and chocolate cashew clusters.
The mayor also teamed up with an elementary student from Canonsburg to sample and ultimately settle on cookie dough ice-cream for a snack. The pig-tailed girl asked the Mayor, "Am I going to be on TV," which made him laugh and make her one promise.
At his next press availability, the mayor brought his new friend, introduced her to the press, and, as promised, put her on TV.
