Giuliani: Clinton Spewing 'Political Venom' on Iraq

Share

September 12, 2007 2:49 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis, Jan Simmonds, Jennifer Parker, and Sunlen Miller Report:

One day after Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., sharply questioned the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Rudy Giuliani blasted his Democratic presidential rival, accusing her of spewing "political venom" in the Iraq war debate.

"I don't know what she's trying to say when she's accusing a general of the ‘willing suspension of disbelief,;" Giuliani said Wednesday on the "Randy and Spiff" show, a radio program which airs in Atlanta. The former New York mayor repeated his criticism of the Democratic frontrunner for president later in the day Wednesday during a media availability in Akron, Ohio.

When Army Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker came before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, Clinton said that their claims of progress in Iraq require a "willing suspension of disbelief."

"Despite what I view is your rather extraordinary efforts in your testimony both yesterday and today," said Clinton, "I think that the reports that you provide to us really require a willing suspension of disbelief."

Giuliani accused Clinton of "playing into" a MoveOn.org ad that ran in the New York Times Monday that read: "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"

After co-host Spiff Carner said, "She's trying to tell us that she knows more about the whole situation than he does," Giuliani shot back by saying, “Doesn’t it also sound like she’s also saying that he isn’t telling the truth?"

"I really do think to accuse a general of the ‘willing suspension of disbelief,’ particular in the atmosphere that Moveon.org has created with these terrible attacks, I don’t know, I mean I think that’s not the way in a responsible way to go about , you know, forging the foreign policy of the United States and the military policy of the United States," said Giuliani. "I think this name calling, you know, saying to people, ‘willing suspension of disbelief,' and then saying the horrible thing they said about betrayal -- that is the last thing we need right now."

"What we need right now," he added, "is a reasoned account, we need statesmanship not political venom."

The Clinton campaign responded to Giuliani's charge that the former first lady is spewing "political venom" by suggesting that the national Republican frontrunner is oblivious to the real situation in Iraq.

"Mayor Giuliani might be content to bury his head in the sand when it comes to ending the war in Iraq," said Clinton spokesman Phil Singer, "but Senator Clinton will continue to ask the hard questions in an effort to get our troops home."

Come on now, Rudy, give Hillery a break. She's got a lot on her plate right now trying to launder $850,000 of corrupt Hsu cash.

Posted by: Life ain't easy for a boy named Hsu | Sep 12, 2007 2:59:02 PM

She's very busy trying to keep a campaign of 350 people from flying apart...

But she is able to know everything going in in Iraq with our 165,000 soldiers...

Sure Hillary... keep checking those donors for dirty money...

Posted by: Waiting for the other Hsu to drop... | Sep 12, 2007 4:07:20 PM

It doesn't surprise me at all that she would make those comments. She is as crocked as they come.

Posted by: Rep | Sep 12, 2007 4:07:48 PM

How are the Dems any different from Al Qaeda in their efforts to help our enemies and hurt our own work to stop Islamic extremism?!?

Posted by: Cory | Sep 12, 2007 4:07:52 PM

How is telling the truth of the matter an "attack"? AWWWWWWWWWWW poor little Hillary can't defend herself. Good thing she's got her ABC poodle to yap back at mean old Mr. Giuliani.

Posted by: birdhurd | Sep 12, 2007 4:09:04 PM

If ABC News didn't hate America so much they would have said what Rudy said before Rudy siad it...But ABC NEWS is full of America Haters

Posted by: bob litfin | Sep 12, 2007 4:09:23 PM

Yea, besides, she has to seem like she supports everything that that HATE organization offers. Once again the Hypocrisy of the LEFT is shown in Vivid Color. Hillery blasted Don Imus for Hate speech, yet she supports what those %&*%&% did to a 4 Star General. They will never, ever win another Presidential election. There is nothing Presidential about Hitlery, Edwards et,al..

Posted by: Michael Demers | Sep 12, 2007 4:10:36 PM

I guess her accomplished statesmanship, exceptional public service, and objective point of view were finally on display...

...oh wait a minute...she has none of those qualities.

I still can't believe my State voted her in twice for the Senate and a large portion of this country is prepared to put her in charge when her only qualification for both offices is....she was married (to a President). Says a lot about the gullibility of my fellow NY voters and the naivete of the general public when it comes to political issues. She knows this and plays it like fiddle.

I'm certain this will only endear her further with the military.

Rudy's a lying DBag.
A one hit 9/11 wonder.

Posted by: RudyLover | Sep 12, 2007 4:12:20 PM

Hillary doesn't even know what's going on in her own finances (according to her) how can she know more then the good general does about Iraq? Where is she getting her reports on the ground from if not the soldiers? The enemy????

Posted by: Ron | Sep 12, 2007 4:13:09 PM

Petraeus is a liar plain and simple. She was too easy on him.

Posted by: DG | Sep 12, 2007 4:13:24 PM

Rudy's attack?

Is Hillery off limits now?

Posted by: Chris | Sep 12, 2007 4:13:35 PM

Only the GOP can accept Gen P's re-worked version his pro-Bush 04 Op Ed piece and we're supposed to take it seriously?

Also, by definition, a surge is a temporary thing. Taking the 30k surged in soldiers back out is NOT a reduction of the troops, it is the natural end of the 'surge'. It is more Bush/GOP doublespeak.

Posted by: betrayed | Sep 12, 2007 4:13:53 PM

ABC News is a joke. Guliani's attack on Hillary? This woman is a total fraud. The General must think these idiot Senators are complete charlatans, which they indeed are.

Anyone who votes for her is a complete fool. Fundraising scams, White House travel firings, billing records, closing her WH files ntil AFTER the 2008 election.

I hope the Democrat party do nominate her so they can LOSE another eight years and the congress.

Posted by: William | Sep 12, 2007 4:14:26 PM

I thought it was a war on terrorism. No, wait ... it was an effort to bring democracy to the middle east. No ... crusade? Anyway ... the democrats are different because they aren't killing Americans, for one. Also, as far as I know, they don't live in caves in Pakistan, nor do they train each other on how to build bombs. And last time I checked the Democrats also wanted to end this ridicilous war. I could go on with the differences if you need me to.

Posted by: Shutup | Sep 12, 2007 4:14:59 PM

Are you serious:

"The Clinton campaign was not able to produce an immediate response to Giuliani's attack."

Was not ABLE to respond? Implying Rudy's attack left them speechless?!

Give me a break. Why doesn't Drudge just take over ABCNews.com in title.

Hillary's not even my horse in this race, but the right-wing bias of this crap-article is ridiculous.

Posted by: TadAllagash | Sep 12, 2007 4:15:19 PM

Give Hillary a chance. She is after all the queen of honesty! She invested $1,000 and turned it into $100,000 (chances of that happening according to university study 1 in 250 million). Someone put FBI files of her opponents in her office. Someone fired the travel office and replaced that staff with her friends. Someone, certainly not Hillary, was involved in Whitewater. Oh then there is Charlie Trie and Hsu. She just has the worst luck. Real honest lady though!

Posted by: Kevin | Sep 12, 2007 4:15:36 PM

She's the smartest woman in the world; according to her. She knows everything. Why won't just one of these kook fringe, liberal democrats denounce terrorism instead of our top general and our troops who are fighting against it to preserve our freedom? We will have to fight this war with one hand tied behind our backs. They are all a huge disgrace to America.

Posted by: Craigo | Sep 12, 2007 4:16:50 PM

Oh, "statesmenship". That means shut up and support the regime. Not happening. What Petraus said is going on and what soldiers who have been there say is going on are two different things. He was brought on by the Bush administration and will act accordingly.

Posted by: RonPaul2008 | Sep 12, 2007 4:17:34 PM

Hillary Clinton will say ANYTHING and DO ANYTHING to get herself into the history books. She is as crooked as they come and proves herself to be even more of a useless scumbag than her useless husband is.

Posted by: Peter Beers | Sep 12, 2007 4:18:10 PM

if you aint first your last!.... we can't afford to be last. stop tucking your tail and running you panty-wasted libs. grow a pair and fight for what is right. all this PC bull crap will go away once we get hit again.

Posted by: Jereme Wilson | Sep 12, 2007 4:18:16 PM

So what's new? Hillary always was and is an anti-American Marxist. Why should we be surprised that she is trashing this selfless patriot?

Posted by: rplat | Sep 12, 2007 4:19:10 PM

OK now, why is it that an ABC news blog is all full of right wing rhetoric-ticians. This is a silly mockery of commentary. Go back and really examine the "left-wing media bias", as presented to you by:

Hannity
O'Reilly
Larry Elder
Rush Limbaugh
Michael Church
Michael Reagan
Neil Cavuto
Brit Hume
Glenn Beck
Tim Russert
Spencer Hughes
Tucker Carlson

Now tell me again, how exactly is is that the media is tilted firmly to the left wing establishment? Pull your heads out of the sand and realize news/editorial is presented to you by these gentlemen above. This IS the media, and they sure as hell aren't lefties.

As for Rudy, go ahead and follow the same strategy administered by the Neo-Conservative movement, divide and conquer. Don't really talk about issues, just say Hillary this, Hillary that, Democrats this, Democrats that. Look people, these politicians, including the Clintons, are trying to divide and conquer us. Don't let them get away with it. Demand a more sensible and reasonable debate. We are ALL Americans, whether we support the GOP or Democrats.

Posted by: Matt | Sep 12, 2007 4:19:34 PM

@betrayed:

Couldn't agree with you more. Republicans are lying to themselves more and more. So they sound more like Ann Coulter more and more. "Dems support terrorism and al Quida."

No, genius. The War in Iraq does that. Even Petraeus admitted he doesn't think the war's made us safer.

How much evidence does it take to admit your side, with the White House and the Congress, royally screwed up. Never? Well then, big surprise.

Guess that's why the majority of Americans still support you...oh yeah, that's right...they don't.

Posted by: TadAllagash | Sep 12, 2007 4:20:17 PM

Bill Clinton fooled her about Monica.

G.W. Bush "fooled" her about WMD.

Hsu fooled her into taking his money.

Maybe she doesn't trust Petraeus because she's just tired of men making a fool of her.

She doesn't need a man to make a fool of her. She's quite good at doing that to herself.

Posted by: DH | Sep 12, 2007 4:21:01 PM

The Clintons think lying is a natural thing to do (it is a part of their genetic make-up) and they assume everyone else is a liar. Fortunately, Unlike the Clintons, most people are honest.

Posted by: Cedric The Great | Sep 12, 2007 4:21:03 PM

The lefty Dems just can't wait to surrender and please their Moveon.org, Code Pink and George Soros masters. Between Clinton calling into question General Petraeus' honesty, Obama wanting to surrender by 12-31-08 and Edwards who doesn't believe terrorism is real, I can't imagine the American people will vote in any one of these pathetic people.

Posted by: bc1358 | Sep 12, 2007 4:21:51 PM

reading the comments above is why I am starting to hate politics. Don't you see the 'leaders' of the left and the right want to keep us divided so they can blame everything that goes wrong on the other side. Let's face it the Democratic party has no plan for Iraq and the Republican plan has been a disaster.

Yesterday's hearing, like the hundreds that came before it, was just another show to keep the media occupied. It was another opportunity for the Presidential candidates to obssess over themselves with their speeches and accusations. In the end, we're still in a war and the war will be going on for a long time to come because our country is run and will be run by a bunch of idiots! None of them appear to love America. They only love themselves and their thirst for more power. It's time for a real revolution!!!

Posted by: KL | Sep 12, 2007 4:22:09 PM

Where did Hillary gain all this experience? Being First Lady (and the first to ever be investigated!)? Being married to Bill? She has not introduced any legislation of substance or merit in her time in the Senate, and prior to that her greatest un-accomplishment was the Hindenburg style explosion of Hillary-Care which she spearheaded through as our “co-president” Will it again be “two for the price of one”? I don’t think we can afford the Clinton’s again! That she refused to repudiate that disgusting Move-On ad speaks volumes!

Posted by: Doug | Sep 12, 2007 4:22:58 PM

Isn't it amazing that the smartest women in the United States can't remember where the Rose Law firm billing records were, where the illegal ChiCom donors went, how the 1,000 FBI files got into the White House, and didn't know about Monica is qualified to be the President. The woman can remember Moveon talking points though, can't she.

Posted by: Belen Gadfly | Sep 12, 2007 4:23:06 PM

"Suspension of Disbelief".., Is that like saying for someone to believe that Clinton, Inc. didn't know money was dirty also requires them to believe she didn't know Hsu was a crook? Thanks, Rudy for being the ONLY candidate with a pair!

Posted by: BluestateCon | Sep 12, 2007 4:23:55 PM

DG - What proof do you have that this 4-star unanimously approved General is lying? When are you and the rest of the Socialists (aka: the now moveon.org controlled Democrat party) going to stop trying to help our enemies win this war?

"Petraeus is a liar plain and simple. She was too easy on him."

hillary is the biggest lying foney this country has seen besides schumer, kenndy and kerry. may her lying tongue become salt.

Posted by: jake | Sep 12, 2007 4:27:14 PM

Hilliary is so phony and so political. She doesn't care a bit for our wonderful men and women who are defending her right to give "hate" speeches. The may think she is the most intelligent woman in the world but I can tell you that she isn't. Please, America, don't elect her our President, nor any of the other American Haters (democrats) who are seeking the presidency.

Stay on her, Rudy. Tell the people what she really stands for.

Posted by: shirley | Sep 12, 2007 4:27:29 PM

I think the comment by Gen. P., about him writing/giving his testimony without notifying higher-ups what the content would be was a play on words. I was suspicious about the visit to Iraq by GW, and now I can understand why. I can only guess, not accuse, when the two met the CiC let it be know what he wanted, and being a good soldier, the Gen. complied.

Posted by: lylepink | Sep 12, 2007 4:28:12 PM

When our conservative friends come to the defense of a pro-gun control, pro-choice, pro-gay rights, twice-divorced, dysfunctional family candidate you got to love it! Talk about "willing suspension of disbelief." It's great!

Luckily, when Clinton gets elected Rudy's defenders will have a pro-gun control, pro-choice, pro-gay rights President in the White House. So, by my calculations you win either way. Right?

Posted by: kenstee | Sep 12, 2007 4:28:47 PM

Good eye Lylepink. You got it. The General is doing his job, which is to paint the same picture the administrations wants us all to believe.

Posted by: matt | Sep 12, 2007 4:29:30 PM

The problem here is not Hillary's words, but the fact that so many people pounce on a democrat everytime a comment questioning the war is made. We have gone too long listening to Bush cabinet members and military personnel tell us how great the war is going, when we all know that it is not. (All depends on your standards)

It is obvious that George Bush wants this war to end just as much as Hillary does. He can not end it becuase his legacy will be covered in conservative feces. Bush is just buying time so that he can leave town and leave the problem to the next president. That way, whoever brings the troups home in the future will be the president that bares the cost.

Politics suck, our system of government sucks and partisans suck this.

Posted by: Rob | Sep 12, 2007 4:29:38 PM

Wow.. it's unbelievable how many people have their heads dug so deeply in the sand they can practically see China. You can fool yourself all you want but you don't have to be a Dem or a Rep to know Iraq is a MESS. The prez lied to get us there, continues to kill our kids that are sent there. I almost hope a Hillary isn't elected prez because the next prez will be spending most of their time just trying to fix the mess Bush has put this country in.
History will not be kind.

Posted by: Mike | Sep 12, 2007 4:30:45 PM

Kenstee, You know it, they are getting all the more desparate because they know they are screwed in 08. That's what you get for voting Bush dynasty in 04. Sorry cons, its game over.

Posted by: matt | Sep 12, 2007 4:30:55 PM

Good for you Hillary, and to all you people that voted for bush – please stay home on the next election

Posted by: ken | Sep 12, 2007 4:30:57 PM

I can't wait for the 2008 campaign to begin where the Democrats will follow Hillary Clinton over the cliff like lemmings. What a wonderful professional, political and social track record she has accumulated from the point of view of a political opponent, from the Rose Law Firm files that were lost and then found in the White House, to her current attempts to sabotage the US effort to bring freedom and democracy in Iraq, to her opposition to the Patriot Act that has helped prevent another terrorist attack on America, which was basically made possible by her husband's refusal to confront the numerous terrorist attacks against us throughout the 90s, banning intelligence agents from dealing with "unsavory" characters, the heightened wall between the CIA and the FBI and the refusal to give the order to shoot to kill Osama Bin Laden when the CIA had him in their sights 13 times as documented by Richard Scheuer.

Posted by: Mario G | Sep 12, 2007 4:31:04 PM

If someone from another planet were to travel to Earth with the sole intention of determining which side of the war the left was on, what would their conclusion be??? Did Bin Laden's last tape sound like Republican talking points or was it damn near word for word with what Hillary, Obama, Edwards, and the rest of the let's lead America to defeat, because we are evil, bunch?

Posted by: Jay | Sep 12, 2007 4:31:13 PM

Hillary's comments were absolutely atrocious. Bill Clinton alienated the military. It looks like Hillary plans for an encore.

Posted by: joe | Sep 12, 2007 4:31:15 PM

Both these creeps believe that taking the lives of babies (human life) should be an acceptable practice. They are both without moral compass and unfit for elected office of any kind.

Posted by: ken | Sep 12, 2007 4:32:08 PM

Indeed, Mrs. Clinton is in fact correct when she says they need a "willing suspension of disbelief". Isn't that what members of these committees are there for in the first place? To hear a report from the field? They were calling General Petraeus a liar before he even spoke. The attitudes of the dems toward him the last two days are to say the least, shameful. They are to say the most, treasonous. They almost make me ashamed to be an American. What a sad day.

re: Matt

You once again fail to realize that the media bias comes out in the NEWS.... the examples you gave: Hannity
O'Reilly
Larry Elder
Rush Limbaugh
Michael Church
Michael Reagan
Neil Cavuto
Brit Hume
Glenn Beck
Tim Russert
Spencer Hughes
Tucker Carlson

are not news anchors they are editorialists? if that’s a word :)

the left wing bias comes from the people who are supposed to feed us the news as is. And alot of times they do. the issues is WHICH items the orgs deem newsworthy. the left leaning media focus is on items that promote their agenda. A daily beat down of negative news will persuade the public to believe that Iraq/War on teror is failing. Imagine if all the positive news was focused on instead of the negative. The terrorists will lose motivation. A tool for them is to get on teh front page of the times. That makes them feel important. Do this next time find a news article from your favorite news source. Go to google news and find an article about the same topic. Click on the All ## news articles >> link and compare headlines. There are two ways to look at this. Positive or negative? I choose to believe that my country is on the positive side of the ball.

Posted by: Jereme | Sep 12, 2007 4:32:29 PM

This is some funny crap. The Demo's are saying we can't trust the Prez or the General BUT we are to trust Hilary and MoveOn.org. Right, they have only our best interests at heart and THEY know what each American needs to succeed. If the Prez makes a mistake lets impeach him, Hilary makes a mistake, well its ok cause she did not know about it thus she is 100% innocent. Bottom line, both parties are full of power hungry politicans. Neither party deserves to hold office. But I stand behind the Repubs because they at least support my son in his fight in the War. Demo's could care less unless it is a photo op.

Unlike the GOP (Gay Ole Party), democrats tend to scrutinize their own. They are not, and never have been lemmings (see Nader 2000). Good try though. Pot calling the kettle black it seems. Enjoy being in the minority friend.

THIS IS NOT WHAT AMERICA WAS INTENDED TO BE!!!!

If Hillary gets in, that will be only 2 Families that have had high office in the White House in the past 20-28 years (if you count G. Bush's Vice Presidency)

WE NEED CHANGE!! Not the OTHER family back in the White house - This is NOT a Monarchy for a reason, because the founding fathers KNEW it was essential to inject new blood into the system to avoid CORRUPTION - Anyone who looks at Rudy OR Hillary knows this is true....

Why tell the truth when lies work so well?

ES,
Thank you for stepping up to take swing for the minority party. As for the getting laid comment, do you REALLY want to open that door for your party? Shall we say Vitter, Craig, Foley? Oh yes, I just did.

I will enjoy my name calling because for 7 years anyone that has an opinion that is contrary to Bush and Co has been silenced by your boys. I will enjoy the name calling because for 7 years people that care about this country have been silenced and ridiculed.

Thank you ES for shedding some light.

As for the Kennedy's and Clinton's, they may be major players in the sack, but at least they aren't all pent up when they make major foreign policy decisions.

By the way - talking about Liberal Media Bias and Republican media bias is ALL rediculous.......

The hidden goals of BOTH parties unite them over the important issues - World Banks, North American Union, RFID chips, World Government, New World Order etc.....

Get over it - Fox is Biased, CBS is biased.....big deal - Use your own critical thinking for once people!!!

H,

A great write once said that the United States is run by one party with two wings. Good point friend, I think all media has one major bias, corporate!

One should take notice of Hillary's background which will show her hate of the military. Lt. Col. Patterson, a non politician who had to be with the Clinton's with the "nuclear football." He was escorated by Hillary and Chelsea and was asked not to wear his uniform. Going back further, in college she was anti-war. She is cleaver at double speak. Be wary. THE QUESTION IS: WOULD WE FEEL SAFE WITH THIS WOMAN AT THE HELM?

Democrats are bought by the far left.
Ask any Democrat to say anything positive about America...they can't. The Democrat Party is becoming a bunch of America haters run by Moveon.org. John F. Kennedy is spinning in his grave.

By the way H, saying CBS is biased in the same way Fox News is biased is a little off kilter. I would say one day of Fox News equals about 10 Daily Show episodes.

CBS is the closest thing to objective news reporting.

Willa,

Be honest please and ask yourself the real question, are YOU ready to elect any WOMAN president? You need to get over your fears of not having big Daddy run the show. Remember where to find the "R" on your ballot and you will be just fine!

Greg8898, When you are in our shoes then you have the right to spit out your media fed BS. Until you join, leave your "war commentary" on the table until you have a first hand view of what we do there.

A person who knowingly, purposefully and repeatedly tells falsehoods is called a liar. For Hillary to accuse General Petraeus of being a liar is pure hypocrisy given her track record. Assuming that she is willing to believe the truth, she owes him a public apology.

Waldruh,

Ask any Democrat why they are so pessimistic, and ask them why JFK is rolling in his grave. I bet the answer won't be "well Waldruh, I just hate America and am evil, that's why."

Democrats are pissed because we have been suppressed by you, your friends in the media, and the conservatives in Congress for 6 years.

We're not gonna take it anymore.

You all need to a reality check!!!! They would all fail lie detector tests. The only thing any of them know how to do is lie and pose for photos with our soldiers. And no one is better at the military photo op than George Bush.

I feel awful for our men and women in uniform, including my cousin, who by the way, went to Iraq because he likes to play video games and thought shooting stuff would be cool. Not kidding about that.

After yesterday's admission from the General that he wasn't sure if the war in Iraq is making us safer, who is going to explain that to the people who are actually fighting this war for us? Hey, we're not sure your mission and risking your lives is actually doing anything for us but good luck and when you get a chance we'd like to have another photo op with you.

By the way, all the blowhards on this blog remember this: While we all sit on our asses playing with our computer today. 168,000 other Americans are risking their lives in 120 degree heat for a mission the General himself admitted yesterday might not be making America safer.

So go ahead with all your anti-Hillary and Anti-Rudy BS, you're not exactly doing anything constructive except spewing out the talking points of these lying assholes.

Again, it's time for the revolution.

Peter,

I think you owe us all an apology for voting a liar into office, twice!

Posted by: Matt | Sep 12, 2007 4:52:18 PM

Riddle:
If all the democratic politicians want the us troops home from iraq, how come they
keep funding the war?

P.S.
And please, spare us the "Cause if they don't fund the war
then the troops won't have body armor" routine.

If the troops are not funded by congress, then they have to come home.
But the dems that CONTROL the house and senate have APPROVED
funding the war since it started!!!!!! They are STILL funding the war!!!!!
Why? Find the answer to that question, and you'll
become a republican.
